Someone on my local message board posted a good point...

Werent people complaining about not being able to identify the riders?

Well now they dont have side numbers?

I like the idea of more room for sponsors!

But isnt this going against the complaining of the average fan?

Yeah, thats what I was saying on my site, it's hard enought to know who is who at times. This wont help, from a fans stand point.

Yea... cuz the front number plates get covered quick...

and my guess is with the 250 class going second now i have a feeling the 250 motos will be slippery so the track can be prime for the 450s on TV...

But im definately not complaining about that because the rougher the track the better my brother rides and by the end of the day... the tracks pretty brutal!

I think the MXoN gives you another idea of what's possible. My guess? You might see some people going with a hybrid of what we have now. a mix of numbers, graphics, sponsor logos...not just solid white or black backgrounds with numbers like we have now.



I'm curious to see what some of the creative opinion leaders (like One Industries) can for the team's design.

I guess that's up to the individual riders and teams. They have said that there will be some guidelines for what needs to be on there...and not.

Oh, and if Team USA shows up with that design for next year's bikes? I'm going to check into defecting to Latvia, Estonia, or in a pinch...maybe Mongolia. Wink

Considering the recent trend of downsizing the side panels to the point where they are barely big enough to hold numbers (KTM and '09 Kawi's) there is not much room to give to the sponsor logos.

The five motorcycle manufacturers are going to cut racing budgets. That was the plan before the economy went south, now it is a sure thing. The huge riding gear contracts have already shrunk. Motocross needs outside sponsors like any other successful motorsport. And those sponsors need brand identification on the motorcycle and rider. How will you tell which rider is which without side number plates? By their color schemes and logos. The photos below are from Dirt Rider. Cool looking bike, and would be even better without having to work around the side plate numbers. There are some great graphics companies in this sport. Give them a sponsor logo and more room on the bike and their will be some great looking bikes, in more than five color schemes, at the Nationals.

over the years i figured out a few things that can help you identify the riders during a race.

riding style, number and certainly the name on the back can help decipher who is who.

here's some more helpfull hints.

one...if the bike is green...it more than likely is a kawasaki rider. in addition if it is yellow it is quite possibly a suzuki, red is honda...always has been and blue is a yamaha. back in the old days yamahas and suzukis were both yellow (sneeky japanese) and it wasn't as easy as it is today

try it next time yer at the track....

The casual fans are the ones that will need help in ID-ing the riders. Bobby is correct, avid observers will not need the side plates. But as Holigan said it will work out and the schemes will look good. And to address going out with ugly gear, anyone remember the 80s. That whole era is questionable, not just MX gear. Just look at what was being sold by the fashion industry.

what the fuck is wrong with you guys? one the casual fan doesn't attend an outdoor race, they don't lug a ice chest full of beer over 2 or 3 hills and they most certainly don't stand in the sun all day eating dust and gas fumes.

the casual fan at HOME will have these things they call graphics, appearing with the blink of an eye key information pertaining to the rider that is in the background of the monitor at that very instant. some of it might even be flashed up in spanish for the bi-lingual casual motocross fan

Why are we always pushing for more in MX?
Havent you all gotten to this point with the little MX has had?
MX didnt suck before big rigs
MX didnt suck before SX and quadra palegic making jumps
MX didnt suck before multi million dollar rider contracts
MX didnt suck before TV coverage
MX didnt suck before 8,000 dollar production bikes
MX didnt suck before 300,000 dollar motor homes and 24 ft enclosed trailer at local tracks.
We had fun right?

Just stop and enjoy the sport,Dont make it something it isnt or shouldnt be.

I think having side number plates dedicated to sponsors is much better. Legs wont cover that up nearly as much as the do on shrouds, it probably the best place for logos and went largely unused.

I think this idea needs to be re-thought...

Think about the team riders who have the same brand of bike and obviously the same sponsors so they have the same style of helmet, gear, graphics, ect.

How do they plan/expect a spectator to differentiate between who is who without numbers visible to every angle?
