Yeah he said that. I still have the recording.

I think it comes down to exposure, the USA gets a lot exposure around the world mx media- as much as gps but in America they don't give the world championship the same coverage as US racing.

As a consequence riders want to race in the USA because they see it in their national mags and on tv... but US riders don't want to race gps because they grow up seeing and knowing nothing about it as it gets a lot less media exposure in the USA.

Jeremy MArtin didn't even know he had to race 450s at the MXDN. I spoke to Alex Martin at the MXDN next year and he said he was surprised at the speed of the other riders. Dungey didn't know a single GP rider in 09 except those that raced in AMA. American riders just don't have the same respect or knowledge of GPs that foreign riders do for the AMA and that's due to media exposure.

You are inspired by what you see...the rest of the world sees American mx and how cool it is but America doesn't see the rest of the world and how cool and prestigious gps are, they are told the ama series and riders are superior to the world championship.

Personally If I was a top pro I would want to race both Ama and gps in my career because I grew up watching and loving both in the UK. If I was born in the USA I would just know about US racing and wouldn't even think about GPs because I wouldn't grow up with it.

As I understand it, some of the Moto Verte crew aren't welcome at the GPs.

I've always dug the GPs. One of the earliest races I went to was a USGP at Carlsbad...probably one of the last ones that Wolsink won. But I have to admit, the battle for public perception over which one is "dominant" is a little weird right now.

mccread, did you ask Giuseppe whether he has plans to do a Supercross GP series? I've heard this is being pitched to teams.

I haven't heard anything about that - and I don't think it's a good idea. Supercross is as American as NFL and baseball, you guys do it the best and it doesn't really work anywhere else either.

The GPs and the outdoor nationals are continually setting themselves up for a competing series to take riders from their ranks.

How much does the guy who finished 21st in the outdoors make?

20th in the gp's?

France has a good sx championship and it's also one of the reasons a lot of French riders don't race Gp's anymore ...

I'll think they have a bigger crowd than some Gp's ....

Watch this video from the sx tour ....

It's simple why there are no GP's in USA, Youthstream cannot find a promoter willing to stump up around $3-400,000 to buy the rights to promote the race, then get no income from trackside advertising, TV rights, and have to hand over a slice of the gate to Youthstream, why would anyone do that??

Youthstream have been allowed to destroy MX GP by their lackeys at the FIM, who are supposed to represent our interests as fans, and are supported by tame 'journalists' who are more afraid of losing their press passes than maintaining some journalistic integrity.

They are afraid to say that the road into GP's now is virtually closed for all but the rich, not necessarily the most talented, the rich riders, teams are asking 100,000 euro per rider, as well as 10,000 euro to enter the GP's, the only way to enter is through so called approved teams, therefore a closed shop. The days of a rider learning his trade are gone, pay the money and anyone can get a ride, thus demeaning the status of a World Championship, and don't get me started on the Under 23 farce.

The Brazilian Grand Prix was the worst yet, YS are following the Ecclestone model of promotion, except they don't seem to realise that this model is unsustainable as is being demonstrated in F1 at the moment, taking all the money out of the sport will kill it, being at the behest of one manufacturer will kill GP's, handing over the rights for a ridiculous amount of time will kill the sport, as is being demonstrated, and allowing the promoter to dictate rules is scandalous, the FIM need a clear out at the top level before the sport is completely dead.
Well, well, well...Truth to F'n Power. I was wondering when someone would just come out and state the obvious...NICE POST.

mccread seems to think this was a dumb post? Show me. Tell me what aspect of it isn't true? Even the comparo to Berine/F1 is correct. How many Privateers they got over there...well, even an actual "Privateer Team"? Uh, NO!

It seems to me that Luongo told a VERY TELLING tale in his comments about "French Riders" (Swiss is a French Culture? Good Luck with that, G-Man!).

As for comparing our series to theirs? Not even gonna bother. I don't have to: Everyone comes here/NO-ONE goes there...if you see Ryan over there...well, it's all explained in the MXA article.

mccread, you need to read my post again, I didn't say the riders were slow, and I wasn't criticising the riders, merely the system, if you want to resort to name calling rather than face the truth, that's up to you, but I don't need a Press Pass to suck up to riders, I'm more interested in the future of the sport and unlike you, I'm not afraid to speak the truth about our sport.

I'm not getting into comparisons of series, one's World, ones National, but the World status is being diminished by mis management and possibly corruption by people who only care about their bank accounts more than the sport.

I do not criticise any riders at any series, it takes talent to get to the top of any series, my argument is, if you were smart enough to see it, that talent alone is not enough at GP's now, you need a huge bankroll as well, and the lack of opportunity to the ambitious rider who wants to enter a GP is gone now thanks to the closed shop approach of YS, which in my opinion is against European Union law on restrictive trade, but no one has the cahones to stand up to them.

If you think the last GP was a good advert for motocross, never mind GP's then you are really blinkered.

So, GP riders want to ride in USA because of magazine and media coverage and because it's cool, what 12 year old thinks that, GP riders want to go to USA for one reason, cash, they can actually make a living in the USA because unlike GP's, they actually get paid to race. Simple as that.

You can listen to the PR bull if you want, but why would anyone not want to ride in the USA for thousands of dollars, live a nice lifestyle etc. instead of scraping a living from personal sponsors, as in F1, very few of the GP riders are getting a wage from their Teams, its all a front, and once again, I'm not criticising the riders, just the system, it is what it is, and again, I'm not saying one series is better than the other, again, one is World, one is National, it's no coincidence that the rise in popularity and status of the US Nationals coincided with YS taking over the World Champs, it's also no coincidence that World Enduros are now full of ex GP riders who are getting paid to ride, no point going on about magazine coverage when the truth is staring you in the face.

When I go to a GP I want to watch the racing, I don't want my money to go out of the sport into an off shore bank account, I want it to go to the riders, or at least stay in the sport,

It's actually unbelievable that there weren't crowds at the GH GP.

What were the ticket prices?

Was it horribly hot?

What the hell happened? Are cali moto fans only interested in American racing? It's still racing. I don't get it.

What I find interesting is that in interview after interview Luongo always has comments on how his GP's are a better product than the US nationals. Questions from the "journalist" are always trying to compare the two series almost like it was prearranged.
When was that last time anyone has asked those type of questions to DC? Luongo does nothing but spew out propaganda and uses his "journalist" shills to do so. Unfortunately it comes off as an inferiority complex, the only way it can be better is to convince the world it is by telling everyone and not showing.
A true World Championship should be the best, with the best riders, the best tracks and the best race organization. Every racer should aspire to be the best in that series, it should be the pinnacle of the sport as it once was when "The Man" ruled the sport. But it's not the best run series in the world, it doesn't have the best tracks (it has some of the best and the worst) and it doesn't have all the best riders and this all because the media doesn't talk up his great series and "brainwashes" the youth into believing that the US is the place to be....Seriously?
If you want to be the best put your emphasis on making it the best, but I guess it is easier to attempt to "brainwash" the youth by "utilizing your journalistic shills" to spread the word in magazines and the internet....

The underlying tone I get from all of this is as such.

Americans just don't care about the GPs. We have a great series here with a bunch of riders we have been watching since they were on 50s.

for one reason or another, the GP faithful find this offensive, at least on this board. Don't take offense to it, we just don't particularly give a shit about that series, GENERALLY SPEAKING. Now, I still DVR the races and watch them when I have absolutely nothing else to do.

I've thought for awhile that Cairoli and Herlings were getting paid under the table to stay in the GP series. Even the way Herlings is sticking around in the MX2 class just seems fishy.....like Luongo wanted to make sure he had a superstar in each class.

The whole thing feels like an episode of the Soprano's

The gp's work like monster trucks and fmx work over here for pay outs/salary to the athlete.

As in no prize money but they receive a salary from somebody.

I don't here the riders in the gp's, monster trucks or freestyle complaining but man do I here the outdoor national riders and fans complain about the payouts

Unadilla USGPs used to be a mob scene. Maybe there should have been more of an emphasis on scene as opposed to mob, but that's not entirely relevant. People showed up, both riders and spectators. I'm trying to think of a factory AMA nationals rider that opted out of the Unadilla USGP in the 80s- I can't. I'm sure there were a few, but there was no shortage of heavy hitters.

I'm not even sure the popularity of the race was really about following GPs - I think its appeal was that it was a one off special event. I appreciate that it was over 20 years ago, but I think the only thing that's changed significantly is the management of both the AMA nationals and the GPs.

It's not offensive to us that you have a great National series, or that you choose to focus on the racing in America instead of the GPs. Thats perfectly reasonable.

What we find offensive is when obnoxious people start belittling the GP riders when they clearly don't know what they're talking about. If you don't give a shit about the GP series and don't follow them then you're basically not qualified to speak so derogatorily about the riders. The GP fans tend to follow both series equally, and I dare say there are a fair few GP fans who are more knowledgeable about the racing in the US than a many Americans are!

Some of you have a nasty arrogant attitude which people find hard to ignore and this is why you guys end up complaining when the MXdN comes around and you think its everyone vs the Americans. It's purely a mutual respect that, as fans of a relatively minor sport, most of us on this side of the pond would like to see and it baffles us that some of you would be so close minded.

Luongo wants the most prestigious series in the world. Right now that prestige is split between the US series and the GPs. Its a simple problem for him to solve, just pay Villopoto,Roczen, Dungey, Tomac, Canard and Stewart $5million each to race the GPs plus win bonuses, problem solved. How can you have the most prestigious series without the biggest payout?

Until the riders quit going to the races "there demands" fall on deaf ears!

My point is most of those riders won't make money here or there!

Bingo.

People find it offensive that Americans who don't watch the World Championship claim their own National championship and American riders are superior without any interest or knowledge of GPs ( which is why there is no GP in the USA). It's nationalistic nonsense based mainly on a lack of knowledge (partly from a lack of US Media coverage giving GP equal billing and hype) and as a consequence respect.

I actually think if the GPs did get more coverage in the USA, American motocross fans would be interested - it's still top level motocross after all, just like "Europeans" enjoy watching the World Championship and AMA SX/MX, because we have been exposed to both in the mx media and realize both are top quality products.

The reality is both series are similar in quality (that seems to offend Americans for some reason, it actually should be a taken as a compliment!).

Personally to me the World Championship is more prestigious than the US Nationals championship even though the level is similar, simply because you have to be very versatile to win it with having to adapt all the different countries and tracks. It doesn't favor one country which makes it the only true way to gauge who really is the best.

You want to know why you are a chump?

Because our loyalty is nationalism and to the country we were born and raised in. Your loyalty is to a series owned by Guisseppe Luongo.

If it were "AMA vs. British Motocross Series" that would be one thing... but then... that wouldn't even be an argument, would it now?

Make sense? We are cheerleading for our country. You are cheerleading for an organization that doesn't give a fuck about you or it's riders.

I doubt you'd find a single poster here, that is in favour of that Prick Luongo, in Any way, shape nor form.

I, for example, wouldn't piss on him, if he was on fire - indeed, I'd happily throw some extra Benzino on the bastard. Luongo needs bodyguards to get around at many events.

So, you're being all patriotic, living vicariously through your countries riders, whilst others 'must love Luongo' if they support the riders and teams doing the GPs? What a load of BS - it's a pathetic stance to take in a debate.

I'm going to agree and disagree with you..Nationalistic nonsense because lack of knowledge I will agree. Lack of US media coverage being the cause, I would say no.
The GP's get equal coverage to the US national on TV, US races are on NBCSports while the GP's are on CBSSports. Now Luongo's TV production for the GP's is nowhere near as professional as the coverage of the nationals but that has nothing to do with anything stateside, that's all on Luongo. US race coverage has more cameras and better commentary, not to mention the way the tracks look on TV, the GP tracks have 3ft tall weeds, fence posts and what not all over whereas the US nationals actually take time to make the areas that surround the tracks more aesthetic and that makes it more appealing on TV.

Both series are not similar quality, 20 rider gates and shitty tracks are not similar and to compare them in that way is nowhere near a compliment, if anything it's just the opposite.

Now as far as riders go I will agree that the top level riders are similar in talent and speed.

When was the last time DC or anyone associated with the promotion of the Nationals were quoted in an interview downgrading the GP's? That's right never and you never will, but mark my words if RV does end up racing the GP's and TC wins the title I guarantee Luongo will spout from the highest mountain top how much greater the MXGP's are....

So, you're being all patriotic, living vicariously through your countries riders, whilst others 'must love Luongo' if they support the riders and teams doing the GPs? What a load of BS - it's a pathetic stance to take in a debate.

The only thing that is pathetic is your grasp of what I said. It sailed right over your head because you were so hung up on the "Luongo" portion that you missed the point.

I think luongo is the smartest business guy in the business! gets people to ride for free and gets crappy tracks to pay 100s of thousands for an event? the guy is way smarter than you give him credit!

purely from a business standpoint everyone is taking advantage of the riders from 8th place down. in America and overseas!

nothing will change unless riders quit going OR a competing event comes into play. till then I will watch all these guys race where ever it is and have fun watching, I don't care about the business side of mx/sx anymore, why should I the riders love getting bent over!

until then the riders will need their mommas and dads to foot the bill or ride fast enough to get paid at local events and do riding schools.

So Clint, if I'd written that - which I could easily have done because I agree with most of it. What would your reply to me be?

You're missing some of this, most agree Loungo is a scumbag, and the way he runs the series is far from ideal, but it's the GP series we've grown up watching over all these years, and why stop watching it?

A majority of the time the actual product is great, and so are many of the riders, everyone has their favourites and those they love to see get beaten etc, there are many who we've seen from raw youngsters too,on the whole our take on the GP's are pretty much the same as yours to the Nationals, many of my motorcycle freinds could hardly name a top US rider

But the crux of the matter is that it's all good and well being patriotic but supposing Loungo bought out the AMA series, all the top riders would still be there, would you still watch the racing and would that be Loungo cheerleading?

Does being so Nationalistic mean you dislike the Euros racing in the AMA? And does your Nationalism mean you'd rather see anyone win rather than a Euro?

You can also be a fan of any rider you like, you like, cheer for anyone,I love watching so many of these guys, the politics is another issue
