Do the top level guys fly private? I've always wondered that, I remember seeing pics of JS7 doing it but can't remember if anyone else did. I know it's incredibly expensive!

Pretty sure RC flew with Netjets or one of the fractional airline companies. Yes, its expensive, and I think it was part of his contract. Sure would be nice to just show up at a local small airport with your bag, walk through small gate right out into your plane and blast out of there!

I know Carl Edwards in Nascar was flying himself home after every event in the past. Even after 500 mile races!

I cant remember if it was on pulp or on a podcast steve did with kdub, but kdub mentioned how much money he went through flying private for a while. It was a pretty good/funny podcast.

20 to 40 grand per round trip, if the rider is paying for it that adds up to over 100 g per month, that's a lot of cash to burn even if you are pulling millions per year.

Personally I think Stewart is being a bit foolish doing it, unless someone else is paying for it.

So the rest of the riders fly commercially right? For an additional $100g per month, I'd opt to fly commercially.

Less chance of catching a bug/virus if you fly private.

That's a bit high for most races.. Most planes are smaller jets and 2000$ an hour or so.. So figure 8-12k a weekend on average.

I remember an RC interview where the 10 grand number was thrown out to get his family home and in bed at a reasonable hour. He probably had to get up early to start getting ready for the next race anyway. He was kinda possessed with that whole championship thing.

Yeah, less chance of catching a bug/virus if you bring your own food to the races with you too. Also, considering how few port a cans (read as in full/nasty) there are in the pits and all the people amped up on Monster drizzling shit juice who got in the pits with an empty can, gloves come in handy while signing autographs and shaking hands. Like I said, RC was kinda obsessed with that whole championship thing.

RC demonstrates with the little Newmann at Houston.

Not really. From Sacramento to Kansas last week was 21K, and that was one way. Show me an actual jet (not a single prop plane) that you can book round trip for long distances for under 15K and I'll start dealing with them exclusively.

That's way, way higher than what I've seen.

RC looks sickly in that photo! No wonder he flew private and wore gloves to avoid germs.

Thanks guys. I have an interest in aviation and wondered, it'd be freakin awesome to fly private but I guess that's out of their range.

Way I have it figured, for a jet like a Citation, it's roughly $6500/hr to hire. Those things move fast though, I believe roughly 2-2.5 hours from Ontario to the west coast of Canada.

I've seen some pics of Reed and the family flying private. Even an episode of "The Moto" showed him flying private. Now that he is the guy paying the bills does he still do it?

G550 baby, the only way to fly.

Best 5 hours of flying for me ever, even better that someone else paid for it.Tongue

Kevin Windham told me he spent over a million dollars flying private.

I interviewed him for a story I wrote that is lost on Davey Coombs' desk!

Here's a pic from our interview... that's my uniform he's wearing.

No that is WAY too much in this case. Well, not for the type of plane they would be flying. A few thousand an hour for a smaller Citation or Learjet.

Your estimates are way too high for the utilization these guys are getting from private AC.
I'd say a conservative estimate is $3k per hour. Well, I suppose if they go from FLorida to west coast the low end of your range is valid. But up the east coast you're too high.

Kevin told me that he used CitationShares. I'm not even sure if they are in business anymore, but it was a fractional ownership group in which you pay a buy-in fee, a yearly fee, and an hourly fee. I'd say a season would cost half a million.

I don't fly bizjets, I fly commercial airliners. but plenty of friends on that side of aviation.

What the hell?

JS puts the bulldog on the JSE jet, but not the family?

That might cause some friction?

I'd say a 750 would be the way to go now days.

I have to think flying private would be a major benefit to the guys but with only the top few guys making "fly private" money and their careers being so short, it just wouldn't make much sense $ wise IMO.

I worked for Cessna and was talking to Roger D about getting Suzuki to pay for a fractional. He was pretty hip to the idea and was gonna throw the commission my way but the economy tanked and Suzuki nixed the idea. I tried to steer him to Citation Shares instead of NetJet. Most of their planes are flying dumpsters. Not saying they aren't well maintained...just trashed interiors. Rich people use them as taxis for their wives and kids while they take the much nicer company jet. Just imagine a soccer mom mini van with wings.
