looks to me like the Holeshot thing can be moved over 10 feet. also do we really need that at all, looks nice but having something like that on the start is questionable
There are no track markers until then for him to pass through. If you believe he is off the track in this photo, please point out the track markers that he has went beyond.

That's the danger of deciding not to enforce a rule because you've made a mistake before. Now any rider next week should feel that the track markers are nothing more than suggestions and if they don't follow the rules when going off the track they can't be penalized.
In all honesty, something tells me that if either Webb or Dungey weren't top 5 guys, they would have been penalized without much thought. But the stature of these guys probably made everyone waffle, much as RV's off track excursions under the previous rule did.
Oh wait, it hasn't.
DC's already said that Dungey broke the rule but won't be punished.
The problem you are having is that you don't understand the marking of the track. Dungey doesn't actually go off the track until he passes the bales and begins traveling on the access road.

give me a big high-power water hose and i'll stand in the first corner in Tooele and anyone that gets outside the markers around turn 1 is getting blasted hah
I'll tell Trey to stack up three pairs of goggles.
i'll shoot you a PM, stop by our camp area and i'll hook you up with a cold one
From a logical point of view I don't understand why it's OK if a rider makes a mistake and goes off the track but doesn't gain an advantage (i.e. he also doesn't lose any ground either)? Surely that's the same as saying "Sure, you can push the limits of traction and if you mess up then you can take a short cut that leaves you in the same place as you were before you messed up without any penalty". I don't get it cos that just encourages guys to push the envelope knowing that there are no consequences (from a rules POV) if they screw up and leave the track.
Cheers

Safety is the priority, and the lanes are there on either side of the track so that the Asterisk Mobile Medics can access as much of the track as possible at any time in the race. Next week we will do better at barricading the inside and outside, which was our intention after Unadilla, only to get hit by some heavy rain. I'm we won't have that problem in Utah.
Thanks for the input, I see the problem clearly, moving on.

Baseball has a different strike zone for different pitchers, basketball has no-calls on star players when it comes to traveling or fouling out at the end of a game, etc.
The real issue to me is that choosing not to enforce this rule because of a mistake made a few weeks ago opens up a lot of creative thinking for Utah.....
And I'm not bashing you, just discussing. I don't envy you in any way because any decision you make about anything to do with the MX series is going to be hated by someone. I'm appreciative that your skin is much thicker than mine would be in your position and you're willing to discuss these types of things with what I consider to be the grass roots of the sport who've been following for 4 decades or more and are still interested in the future of it. I'm hoping you don't misinterpret disagreement or questioning with a lack of respect for your hard work, effort, or obvious love for what you believe to be the good of the sport.
There is a reason DC gets so much respect from those of us who always seem to be stuck at work. He may not have my beloved 125's out on the national stage, but the dude just busts his ass to get things done. Never see him standing around doing nothing, always on the run or getting his hands dirty. I like the way he rolls. Any time I'm at a race I always make an effort to shake his hand and thank him for all he does.
I did not set this up for failure by saying we set a precedence in Unadilla that we should follow these last two races. It would have been hard to dock Ryan Dungey for what happened here after not docking all of those guys at Unadilla. What we should have done was have all the hay bales out like we planned, but they got moved so they medics could get through and I failed to move them back. I plan on having it sorted better and being there to make sure in Utah. (And I don't think anyone other than Dungey went off and made it through the mud on any of the starts.)
I know you're not bashing me but I am starting to feel bad for the dead horse that is getting bashed here.... Wait, maybe we can use that for a track barrier in Utah!
Just kidding.
