I had 4 kids by 25yrs if age and a total income of 30 grand, kids raced bikes that were up to 7 yrs old, played rugby league of a weekend till they were 14yrs old and 1 got a ride on Villo's bike and 4 yrs AMA and the other got an AMA podium and Sx semi wins and was Dungeys partner. I don't the above statements are correct.

Your right it don't have to be expensive. You probably done everything to the bikes yourself and skipped the $12 a quart oil and ran $12 a gallon oil and got the same results. Instead if buying new tires you may have flipped them around for a fresh edge. Most importantly you loved it as much as the riders.
However you got it done you got it done right

Your kid comes home with a new monster flat brim hat Baggie shorts and proceeds to tell your wife why " pimping ain't easy "

this is absolutely correct and then your kid better have talent and a little luck. Your whole family must be willing to bow down to the MX GOD AKA "MX SPORTS" and do without so that lil Jonny Brotocross can get to the luxurious MX vacation destination known as Loretta Lynns. Sport has gotten waaaaaaay out of hand and is cost prohibitive for a middle classed family at the National level

What makes you guys so high and mighty to tell someone else that they can't achieve their goals, you're in no place to say that. I think the biggest sign your kid won't make is if his mentally affected by being told negative stuff like this. Besides we're all looking at it from an outside perspective, as far as I know no one that's commented has been pro, so how are us Vitards to know what it takes to make it?
Ya I don't think some negative comment on this message board is gonna keep Little Joey Sonaffabitch from realizing his dream of a pro career.

If your kid is not absolutely wasting everyone at the local track, big bikes included, he won't be making it.

WHen Robby Reynard was on 80s at Motorcyce Raceways, the gate would drop and his boots would be off... he would put his boots on slowly and then go. Won every race by at least half a lap. On some days, depending on who was there, he would destroy every rider there, regardless of bike size.

When I was on 80s I had the track record at Paradise Valley in Oklahoma by over a second, and it was an elevation track built for HP.

If he doesn't absolutely waste everybody when he goes to ANY local track, he won't be making it.

In actuality, LL is not that expensive. What will kill you is the training facility your rider has to live at year around to be competitive at the 'luxurious MX vacation destination" I would be curious to see how many podium spots went to riders that didn't live at a training facility- even the damn C class was talking about them!

when I factor the cost I start the tab in January running all the way to the last day at LL. There is no such thing as competitive local racing anymore - LL is a year round pursuit or chances are against you even making it on the gate especially once they hit the 85's. So, my LL bill this year was well over 20 G's .

You don't have to go to Loretta Lynn's to become a professional motocross racer.

Edit: I should add that I'm not talking about making a living from racing pro mx, but getting to the professional level and even having success is definitely possible without going the amateur national route (I.e. Ronnie Stewart)

You cannot blame MXsports for 20K. 2 areas, 1 regional, and at trip to Tenn. 5K tops. Training, parts, etc you need even if you don't go to LL.

Not blaming MX sports nobody put a gun to our head.- it's a hell of an accomplishment just to make it to Loretta's and something the kid will never forget.

Give MX sports credit for their business acumen.... they have it figured out.

2 good, competitive 85's are gonna be 10 G's every bit of it.

I probably spend $5K a year taking my son racing locally. He enjoys and we spend a lot of quality time together. He's a top 5 local kid and I don't see him making a living at it but we enjoy it,

One of my best friends was a 4 time National Champ and won LL in the B class and came back the next year to win the A class beating Jeff Emig and Damon Bradshaw. He was a top ten rider in the Pro's but injuries took their too and now he is a Dentist.

Best $5K you will ever spend !!

If they haven't broken/cracked/stretched their frames or busted wheels on the regular through over stressing the engineering design factor. Maybe some exceptions who ride light like Pourcel, but if they aren't breaking mini bikes and improving each ride, your dreaming.

I don't figure in the price of bikes, because you need them to race locally too. That said, I would love to be able to get 2 bikes for 10- wait till your boy ask you for a couple of 450's

Totally Old school, but look at Barnett he was So much faster then anyone else around here no matter where he went to race.
I hear Kehoe and Burnworth out West same thing "In a different league" among there completion coming through the ranks.

These days I don't know Homeschool / Personal trainers / private tracks on top of the talent

I hate the negativity of threads like this. But, I think it all boils down to the kid & the parents ability to support it. The kid must have these attributes:

1) Determination
2) Natural Talent
3) Fearless

It's pieces to a puzzle, if any 1 of those they will really struggle. For the rest of the comments like "isn't known by 16" - whatever...

Not motocross, but I feel comparable... My son is ranked at the top in the Nation for BMX Racing in his age group. Half of the kids he's racing with will burn-out by they time their teenagers. Some kids you think don't think have it, 1 day it will just click & they will go from the back to the front on the span of a couple months. I'm not worried about the kids he's racing with now, I'm worried about the kids that come-on when he's 10, 11, 12 - those are the kids that are doing it because they want to, not because they are living daddy's dream.

Statistically, I'd say the number one sign that your kid won't make a living racing MX is that your kid races MX. What percentage of racers really make a living from racing motocross, if we define making a living as not having to work another job in between races? Maybe 40 or 60 guys in the country by the time you count indoors, outdoors, 250s, 450s and arenacross?

I'm really not trying to crush dreams, do you guys think that number is higher?
Can't tell you the percentage that make it.

I can tell you 100% of kids that don't race, never make it.

For the record.... I meant for this thread to be more comical. In all actuality the thread is incorrect from the start. It's not about signs of you kid making it. If you really want to know the deal breaker. Look in the mirror. If you won't drive 4 hours to and from a track with faster riders because your too tired on Monday morning. Don't look good.
To get back on track.... If the kid has been riding for three years and his elbow flaps like a sea gull between every gear on and off the throttle. Not good. Ha!

check your kids RPV SCORE if he is in any advancement classes mini or otherwise

if healthy 20 races a year (at least) were talking RPV of around 20.0. you need a 15.0 just to advance

Chase Sexton raced 72 times in 2013 for a RPV of 21.93. If he stays healthy he should be signing autographs

Yet there's guys you'll see racing professionally that may have never got better than 3rd in there life. There's kids with raw talent but I believe anyone can do it if they put the time and effort in. As I said in another comment, people post on here expressing their opinions so one would think that's their real life opinion, I would hope they'd keep it to themselves. It's hard to do something when people tell you that you can't.

My sis went to Loyala for her M.S.
If you were by any chance a Sigma Chi you may be acquainted with my older brother who was an ASU student at the time you were there. Ever ride/race at Burnthill?? Or buy bikes from JT on Parker??

Are we talking about being a top 5 guy or just racing the Nationals and making SX night shows?

I told my son, "I'm buys and caring for your bikes until you are 15. At that point we will know. If you can't keep up with the top 10 LL guys on local tracks then at 16, you need a job to pay for your racing." He is 13 now and working hard. I'm on the fence right now with his speed. He is just a touch off of where he needs to be. If he makes it then, Awesome for him. If he doesn't then Awesome for my bank account.
