This is a pretty f-ed up thread. I'm sure a lot of the people saying they would NEVER drink Red Bull/Monster/Rockstar are the same guys wanting to get a prescription DRUG to make them better in the Vet class.

I never took addrerall until my racing days were over.. but it definitely was a life saver in college. I would take it only when I had a midterm, final or paper due and was able to cram study the day/night before and kill it on my work. After my first experience I thought to myself whoever is taking this everyday definitely has an unfair advantage at life! lol. I felt so motivated and focused that If i took it everyday I would get a lot further in life. That part I liked, but as for the rest of it I hated the feeling. It gave me cold sweats and chills, headaches and back pain. Really bad dry mouth and couldn't sleep right for a couple days. I definitely would never take this for fun or if I didn't feel like I really needed it to get something done.

I also thought about how this would have effected me in my racing days. From my experience I felt like it would keep me super focused on the track and give me a competitive edge. However the spike in heart rate just sitting at a desk made it seem like not a good idea. Ive never tried it but I have taken it gotten work done and gone to the gym and let me tell you that work out wasn't good. I felt exhausted with anything I was doing and sweating like crazy. I had to just leave and call it a day... too much for me to handle.

All my experiences were with the 30mg dose.. which is about the largest dose there is. I knew kids in college who were prescribed to take two 30 mg doses a day which blows my mind how someone can even handle that everyday. I didn't feel right for a few days and definitely couldn't imagine taking it everyday. Im sure lower doses would be better though for activities.

I have been reading a lot lately on how SOME people think adderall should be allowed in sports. I just wanted to give my take on it all and maybe enlighten some of those who do not know how it works/feels.

I have tried it for school. As said many times, it is popular among college students because of its affects studying/test taking. I do not have ADD of any sort. (that i am aware of). I found that when i took it, it GREATLY increased my focus on whatever I was doing.

While I have only taken it a handful of times for school ONLY, i never took any before motos, though I could definitely see it giving an unfair advantage. The amount of concentration/focus I could do with it was unprecedented. I could only imagine what that kind of focus that could do to someone on a track.

While I never used to for riding, I was very curious what it could do and thought about doing it once for the hell of it but ended up deciding not to because of the way it made my heart beat, which back when i was training for nationals a couple years ago my heart rate was peaking around 195 during 30 min motos. (dont look for me in results, you wont see me. helicopter ride with brain bleed means only fun riding now Pinch )

All and all, It gives a big boost to energy, and an even BIGGER boost to concentration to which i would feel at a major disadvantage if i knew someone i was racing against had it. In other words if someone could run the same pace as i before the medicine, they would FOR SURE be faster as a direct result of the focus/energy.

Again, this is all based on how this affected ME, because it can definitely affects others in other ways.
And unless the rider has been prescribed it previous to his pro career, it should be illegal for them to use. I dont care if they recently got diagnosed with ADD/ADHD or not, they managed before, they can keep managing or hang up pro boots.

This is all my opinion, take that into consideration. Everyone has different views. Just wanted to enlighten people who have not experienced adderall on its affects and what I think about it.

This stuff isn't on the same level as steroids or something, but still gives an unfair advantage.

tl;dr
I do not have ADD. (not aware at least)
I have taken adderall for college and seen major improvements in grades.
MASSIVE focus/energy
Depending on how it affects you it CAN make you faster.
Completely unfair and should be illegal in sports, unless prescribe PRIOR to pro career.
All my opinion from experience.
Did it make you sweat excessivly ?

Ive been taking Adderall for about five years. I take 30mg x2 daily. For me it is not an advantage at all. It makes me super jittery on the bike and I start doing stupid shit that I would not normally do. Also, like some people have already mentioned, it makes your heart rate shoot threw the roof, which makes it imposibe to control your breathing. And when you can't control your breathing you start to feel dizzy, faint and you feel fatigued very quickly. Its garbage for moto IMO... I think Adderall does what its suppose to do in every day life stations for the people that need it. But when you drop a flood of adrenaline on top of it, it puts you way over the top. Thats just been my experience, it my work different for other people.
Another guy in this thred recommended yoga to gain focus wile riding, and I could not agree more! I do hot yoga like its my job! It teaches you to remain focused wile concentrating on proper breathing techniques and improves flexibility. I started going because of injuries, and when I was able to ride again I would do a whole moto (local races 6-8 laps) without ever breathing threw my mouth (the yoga broads make you breath threw your nose) and my focus was better the I ever thought it could be. You wile gain 100x more focus by learning to control your breathing then you ever could by using Rx drugs. Stamp it Bros....

Not that i recall. I do remember it causing me to be dehydrated though, which explains some of those symptoms in one of the other posts above

I'm almost positive I raced you back in the early to mid 2000's at Muddy Creek and other east coast events. If I'm correct, I remember you hanging with/beating Ian Trettel and all the other top guys on 60's and 85 7-11. You definitely have some cool insight on this and the speed to back it up.
That would have been me! I didnt think many people remembered me haha

I had to stop racing due to a major chest surgery i had to have that required me to have 2 bars under my sternum for 3 years, during which time i could not ride.. (not moto related, birth related) I did try to come back but 3 years is a long time to have off at 14 y/o when riding at that level. I was still fast but wasnt winning all the time like i used too, and i think that is what kinda derailed me. It was very frustrating seeing everyone I used to beat on TV and basically made me loose my drive.

I still get bummed about it from time to time so I just have to think about how none of what happened was in my control so I dont have any regrets. Just goes to show how crucial it is in this sport to start as a young age and live/eat/breath it everyday in order to make it, even if you are gifted. The way our sport has changed, I dont see it being a possibility for a kid who is 13 years old and never rode to pick it up and become a champion like jeremy mcgrath did.

I still ride now though! was planning on doing some pro nationals privateer style but had a brain bleed a couple years ago at pro sport mx in VA. Again it was something out of my control, had the holeshot and someone t-boned me in the first corner. Had to bring in 2 helicopters for one wreck Sad Doctors said I shouldnt ride. I say we know the risks we take EVERYTIME we throw a leg over a bike. So now i ride for the pure enjoyment, maybe do some races here and there. Ill never leave this sport. Smile

Ok.....let's have a short lesson on the performance enhancing effects of some meds being discussed here.....

Adderall (or Ritalin, or any other amphetamine analog)......GOOD for SX/MX. As I said elsewhere. this is a drug that will decrease reaction time, improve focus and improve hand-eye coordination. It would be a prime med for race day/night performance enhancement.

Xanax.........BAD for SX/MX. Essentially the opposite physiologic effect of amphetamine.

Narcotics..........BAD for SX/MX. See Xanax above.

Beta blockers..........BAD for SX/MX. Won't allow the necessary increase in HR to give the body the cardiac output it desires.

Other questions?
What field of practice are you in?

I never heard of Adderall so I did a Google Search. Here's a list of side effects:

Side Effects Symptoms

Before you decide to take an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder treatment drug, such as Adderall, consider its common side effects including:

• Lack of appetite
• Headache
• Inability to fall asleep and stay asleep
• Dry Mouth
• Abdominal Pain and Discomfort
• Weight Loss
• Restlessness

If you already suffer from gastrointestinal problems, congenital heart defects or thyroid problems, Adderall prescription medication could interfere with your treatment plan for an underlying illness. Not all patients react the same to Adderall, so your doctor will follow you closely with frequent check-ups and routine medical exams.

Hazardous Side Effects

While most patients can tolerate low dosages of Adderall prescription medicine with minimal problems, there are some dangerous or hazardous side effects you should discuss with your doctor before starting a treatment plan. Some hazardous side effects include:

• Dangerous increase in blood pressure
• Tachycardia or a high pulse rate
• Irregular heart rate
• Difficulty breathing
• Chest pain
• Allergic reaction that includes swelling and redness in the eyes or throat
• Migraine headaches
• Syncope or losing consciousness
• Blurry or double vision
• Seizure activity and excessive and uncontrollable shaking
• Extreme nervousness and paranoid delusions
• Mood swings that include hostility and severe aggression
• Depression

I believe and declare that's just another example of there being no easy way in motocross. There's no substitute for hard work and dedication. And now that I'm getting older (60) I can honestly add: there's no substitute for youth!
I bet no one would say it isn't true that, "There is no substitute for hard work." Thing is all the top guys are working hard...
I bet no one would say it isn't true that, "There is no substitute for hard work." Thing is all the top guys are working hard. So if everyone is working hard, then some drug that can focus one guys mind over someone else would be a big advantage.
I understand what you're saying but there's a lot of science, mental strength and continued focus that goes into that hard work. One guy may think he's working at it as hard as possible but for another guy that wouldn't be nearly enough work being put in. Then there's the smart work factors too. Too much hard work in the wrong areas at the wrong times isn't good, hence the science part of the puzzle. Factor in the power of mental belief and you have another crucial factor.

I believe these are the real elements for preparation and commitment. If a guy doesn't have enough faith in these things he may start looking for outside the box help, hence drugs. Not only are they illegal but as you can see from the potential side effects you're playing "Russian Roulette".

If I had to bet money on weather the top riders are using illegal drugs or not, I would bet NOT.

Typical medical professional ego. Most of the posts i read were people's experience with the stuff.
Instead of coming in flashing how superior you are, maybe add something to the thread other than your inflated ego b.s.

Taking prescription drugs without a prescription......

Should they take your college degree away now ? (If you acquired one)

Take Adderol and race a moto and watch the guy the collapse from an aortic anuerysm.....or a stroke from lack of blood supply to the brain from inadequate pumping action of the heart......

scary stuff....

Taking adderol in college (with no ADDHD diagnosis) is just like juicin' in the gym. Lazy.

Therapeutic use is bullshit when it comes to using for a PED purpose.

Either ban it or let it be used. TUE might work for something like Ibuprofen.
