I know a guy who races one in non current.... It's point and shoot all the way, doesn't look fun at all. Tip toe through the corner then hold on.

Uh, no. I have taken my 01 cr to the track a few times and i had no problem getting it to turn. I actually felt more comfortable on it than I thought I would, and I think my laps were probably comparable to on a 450. The power is very manageable with a large flywheel weight, and puts down traction well. I actually really liked the way the bike handled! Don't knock em' till you try em'.

Really? I've heard a ton of people, even pro riders, say what a horrible bike a 500 is for MX. I'm sure you can ride one at a C rider's pace but if you wanted to haul ass it would be too unmanageable.

You can torque it around pretty much like a 4 stroke, upper gears for passing...Tongue

I had one. I'm 40 and about a Vet B rider. That matters.

I've been able to jump from bike to bike most of my life with no real problems, 125, 250f, 450, 250 two-stroke, whatever. It took me a year to learn to ride the 500 coming off a 450. I had a Service Honda CR500AF. It was very tricked out and set up to my liking. Hit like a ton of bricks. If I had it to do over again, I'd go huge on the flywheel.

The bikes are super fun. You can wait until the last minute to commit to a line or jump.......AFTER you get used to the delivery. I jumped nose high for about 3 months. Over jumping and underjumping were a big issue for me. The difference was about 2 degrees of throttle.

The bike is very physically demanding to ride fast on. Playing around is awesome, but when you get serious, it will wear out your upper body trying to hold on to the beast.

This was just my experience. I'd love to have another but the wallet protested on owning multiple bikes when one of them is a $12,000 machine. Nothing like the sound of a crisp 500 pulling hard on the track.

Actually had some of my most fun times riding/racing a big bore. Some of my worst crashes too though.

I'm not a pro by any means, but I'm not a noob either. I would say I'm probably running a mid b class pace ( I don't race mx anymore so I'm just going off of how I look compared to others on practice days), but I don't see any reason why these bikes can't be ridden fast. If you hop on with an open mind, you might be surprised how fast they can be.

Not sure if you caught it, but I'm the one who posted the 500 gopro thread.

I race a 87 kx500 in pre 90 events and the odd modern expert motocross localy. It handles great and the engine is smooth and a bit like a 450 but not as good at finding traction in hard slick conditions.
The steel frame and conventional forks means it is pretty forgiving to ride and a set of twinwalls keep the vibes down.
you have to flow round the track on a 500 and carry your speed using the tourque of the motor in the slow bits and firering it down the straits. I realy enjoy it and very rewarding when you get it right.
And the kids on 250f's hate it when you beat them.Tongue Tongue

I ride a CR500 engine in an '05CRF250R chassis and race in the vet classes usually in the back half of the pack--might do better if I could get in more than 2 events per year.
The bike is not the killer some people think. It does out pull everything on the track when it has traction. I don't like the way this bike corners--this may have more to do with the way I fabricated the engine mounting than the fact that its a big bore 2-stroke. It corners better on the throttle with the back wheel sliding out a little, whereas every 450 I've ridden rolls around the corners and follows the front tire better. I put a flywheel weight on the CR250 ignition to try and improve traction, but this probably negatively affects cornering a little.

Bottom line: I love riding the bike and have a lot of satisfaction in riding something I built---but I've been on modern 450s, and I can definitely get around the track faster on them. Also, the 500 is an arm-pump generator if I get lazy and forget to hold on with my knees and keep my body weight forward. Obviously, sissy boys don't need a bike they can't kick start for themselves.

I've been riding a '95 KX500 the last few weeks since the crank puked on my CRF450.

The are not as gnarly as the myths suggest. The power hits hard, but it doesn't really out-accelerate a good 450 - unless you were doing long drag races.

They turn like a schoolbus towing a boat, but they are very stable and you can hang it out more than you expect.

I'm an A rider. The 500 was scary to ride until I put modern footpegs and stiffer fork springs in. It actually jumps OK, but whipping/scrubbing is a terrible idea, the chassis just will not go back in line with all that crank inertia.

And it vibrates more than you can imagine.

For a decent rider they are really fun - as a novelty. They would never be better on anything but a very fast, wide open field track.

I should throw up a GoPro vid...

i have someone that lends me a 2004 KX500 for a few races a rear, they are fun on natural flowing tracks, and on natural terrain tracks, but on a modern supercross styled track they are not so fun, you have to ride them a bit different, but they are fun, and pass anything in a straight line when hooked up,

Lol I was going to post this video but you beat me to it. I'm sure a 500 isn't for everybody, but this video made me want to find a CR 500 and restore it for sure.

A mate of mine races a CR500 AF. He's making a come back after a few years off the bike.

He raced a KX250 with a KX500 engine in our National series and finished 10th. He's a Vet now.

I rode a KX500 for one season, and offed it. The "bus towing a boat" reference was exactly why. Bought a CR500 and neve looked back. There's no question a Honda is a superior MX machine, but I could see why the KX ruled the desert. Th 500 is definitely a riding style it's own, smooth and flow are the secrets to speed. Let the motor torque you around, and short shift.

I've got an AF now, and that motor in a newer chassis is pretty sweet, but if you buy it and find it a little "lacking" in the modernness dept, put a set of newer Twin Chamber Showas on it, and a subframe and air box off of a 93/96 CR250. Makes a huge difference in the ergos. Buy the bike, and if you don't like it, off it. You won't lose money unless you pay too much to begin with.

The biggest danger in an old school 500 is in believing the things you find online.

It's 2014 and if someone isn't clever enough to figure out how to quell the vibration in a 500…………they must not have great balance. ;-)

Please don't make fun of me too bad......riding the 89 500 in an 81-89 class. I make a few bobbles, tend to corner a gear to high and get tired easily. I love my 500's though.
I will say I personally am a lot faster on my 450, everything about is better. This 500 has a 2001 500 shock with Showa twin chambers and flexx bars.

I almost quit mx after several CR500s.
Good thing my wife surprized me by buying the first YZ400F coming to Iowa, in 1998.
It's been over 45-years riding mx, now. Glad I didn't quit!

I actually felt more comfortable on it than I thought I would, and I think my laps were probably comparable to on a 450. The power is very manageable with a large flywheel weight, and puts down traction well. I actually really liked the way the bike handled! Don't knock em' till you try em'.

They are not that heavy. I agree with the flywell, more enduro like, more traction. It is super fun to ride (a 500 KX 95 mod with about 70 hp - the owner is a personality, ie. CBR full version no t shirt no helmet & tong at 80-100 mph in city center, to save the son's 160db scooter & so yell at the cop.................................), for sure because I have never ridden one on a track with big jumps. This part may be sketcky, because any whiskey throttle should make a new Red Bud Stewart 125 leap on any local track. For serious, fit and ultra technical racers only. i.e. JMB preferred the 500 over any bike.

P.S. It should be interesting to see what a 500 can do with steel frame and all the new tricks (oversize, PC suspensions, rekluse, etc)

I got back into moto in 97 on a 89 CR-500. Being 6'1" and 210 lbs forced me to up the spring rates. I bored it .080 and this eliminated the "eyebrow" ports over the exhaust port (put there for ease of starting). I also milled the head .010 and carbon reeded it with a fatty pipe. Funnest bike I've ever owned. Holeshot 90% of my motos and had a blast even with the horrendous forks.

Trick to riding them properly was to blitz the first couple of laps and pull a huge lead then get tired and torque around a gear or two high, while still traveling at a pretty good clip. I only raced one desert race on it but it was after a season of moto so those cats didn't stand a chance.
