Cobain was an addict. Shit....even many talented jazz players were hooked on heroin. Loved his music. Last night I went to the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn. One of the best moments of the evening was Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, Annie Clark and Lorde each singing a different Nirvana song.

I don't understand the hate towards an addict, it's not like they are injecting the folks mad at them. If you going to be mad at all stupid people then you will be busy hating.

I hear you....It's sad that heroin is making a comeback in high schools and the addiction doesn't take away from the fact that good people can make terrible mistakes.

I was in 9th grade when he died. I remember it like yesterday it was surreal, definitely one of my generations watershed moments. That being said I think time and resources would be better spent on trying to find missing children.

I still play multiple Nirvana songs on my guitar on a daily basis. Just really raw live music. I'm not on drugs but I can relate to some of his songs. A large majority of the music industry are or were on drugs and some of your favorites could be worse junkies than he was so that is mute. Try embracing the talent or skills of people instead of just bashing anything that is not your taste people that goes with riders too. lol I think Cobain and Staley had quite a few more great songs to come.

Good riddance.
I met Kurt back in Oct 1991 before the show that they played at Fox Theater in Portland Or.
I spent quite a while talking to him.
He was anything but a "loser". He was talented in his own right. Very nice, friendly & down to earth guy,but quite a fragile guy.
In fact deep down I don't think he liked the "fame/attention".
I believe that is what lead to his suicide.
Just to get out of that life ,he would go and slum it up with people from all walks of life,to basically face reality again.
Who he was & where he came from - he never felt he was anything special.

His drug problems were just part of the whole music scene / culture back in those days.
Another good dude who died out of the spotlight with drug issues was Andy Wood.
In fact the song "Far Behind" was written as a tribute to & about Andy ,by Kevin (Candle Box).
That whole scene was pretty crazy & there were an abundance of so-called addicts.
We even lost Layne.

Fuck Cobain and his dumbass. Sticking a needle in your arm is a choice.

I will reserve my sympathies for those more worthy. Those who dont get a choice. Those dealt a bullshit hand in the card-game of life.

"Sticking a needle in your arm is a choice. "

So is pouring a bottle of booze down your throat or popping pills, doing rails & smoking junk.
It seems like a lot of artists all have their own demons to escape reality.
Some even like Hank JR. are low enough to even promote the stuff.
He Od'd more then once also.
To each is own I guess.
Personally I wouldn't want to live in the spot-lite like those guys do.
I'm certain it takes their toll on them.

As for sympathy...
None needed for those guys.
They do indeed make their own conditions, just as the rest of us do.

And maybe they should stick up a photo of that child on the door of liquor store or a beer isle.
Why not donate this money to help children like that rather then pour booze down your throat?
Is an add they could use.
Might be an eye opener for some. Squashing that gateway.

Nobody said you were a bad guy,Bobby.
We're just talking about famous musicians drugs and addicts.
Putting opinions out there.

There's certainly many ways to destroy ones self.
I've always thought alcohol was the worst gateway that really leads to self destruction when abused.
Opiates are also, pills or if they wish to inject it - just a more miserable shorter lifespan when they choose that life
with the hard stuff.

I understand you guys, and Im putting my opinion out there also. Im well aware that speaking your mind and being who you are is gonna make people not like you. Id rather be disliked for who I really am, than liked because Im putting up a facade.

I think most in society detest the junkie lifestyle.
Nothing good ever comes out of it - so people detest it / I dont like it either nor would I partake in injecting opiates.
But it's not who the real person is - they take that shit to change - but do make their own conditions.
Everyone who abuses any substance takes it to change temporarily /escape.
If it didnt change them while under the influence - they wouldn't take the shit in the first place.
Personally,I was never even a big Nirvana fan.
But I respect the person he was when he wasn't using.
I like some of the Meat Puppets covers he did though also.
SOMETHING IN THE WAY was also a neat tune he wrote - with a true experience he had I believe.
I always liked Mudhoney though...and that is who I went to see that night, when I seen them at the Fox in PDX
But I've always tried to understand that whole culture(music stars & drugs in general) and those people.
Just sucks that the drugs destroyed a lot of good dudes.

Cobain isn't anyone's Hero. He's rated by his musical talent. George Bush was a drunk , lucky to have a rich Dad with connections and became President of the United States. He will be remembered as our President. My Uncle died by drinking himself to death. I could look down on him as being too weak to face the challenges life threw at him. In fact, I admire the man. He served combat duty in the Korean War as a tank sergeant and raised a family on two jobs. The War changed him. I really know nothing about Cobain other than what the media has fed me. I could say that Cobain, Bush and my Uncle are all pieces of shit if I only want to make that decision on their mistakes or how they died. My Uncle seen War. Something many of us are blessed not to witness. Bush overcame his drinking and by no accident applied himself to become our President. Cobain wrote and created music that his generation could identify with. He wanted to create something outside of the music industry .He succeeded. Some people will only remember him by his addiction and suicide. That's fine too.

Crash, what do you think of Adam Brown (he was a junkie and still struggled even when he was in the teams - turned his life around though - He was a Devgru Operator)?
Or Dan Kennedy or Jeff Reynolds?
These were the 2 ex SEALS that OD'd from narcotics on the ship recently.
The stuff is everywhere and can effect some of the greatest & most talented dudes who've ever walked this Earth.
Even Navy SEALS - some of the most elite operators on the face of the Earth.
Personally I dont have sympathy for their addictions.
But I do indeed respect the men they were, when they weren't under the influence.

I hate very few people...a selfish drug addict isn't worth my time to "hate".

Why do you hate me? Does that make you a better person than I am?

It's funny to me because I can't stand to watch old interviews with Kurt or see photos of him, he was such a scrawny dweeby little dork. But I pretty much love Nirvana.

Aside from all the pandemonium above, Heroin makes the best music!! I love music by junkies.

Layne Staley was another great songwriter that liked to needle up his arms.

As far as it goes, I think a lot of musicians who OD are considered better than they actually are. I firmly believe Sublime (Bradley Nowell) and Nirvana are 2 perfect examples of this. Sublime made its living off of stoners.

I was a rocker back in the '70's. OK, slightly better than garage band level but I scratched the surface of the lifestyle. The real creative people I met were just different than the rest of us. It was like normal life bored the living shit out of them but they hated being special. They didn't really fit in. So many resorted to drugs. I can play just about anything I hear on a guitar or a piano if you give me a few minutes but I don't have a creative bone in my body. I've spent my entire adult life envious of real creative artists of any kind but they seem so tortured in a way. Maybe it's a good thing I was "normal".
