Consistency and when those fast laps in the race is the thing tho....

James has always been perceived as unbelievably faster when in reality many times it was almost nothing or he was even slower. He just looks faster, if he wins he got the job done, you only have to win by .001 seconds. But when you point out facts the rabid Stewart fans come out of the woodwork. James Stewart is one of the best Supercrossers ever, not the best ever, one of the best ever. So is Reed, so is RC, Johnson, .......I think MC will always be thought of as the King because he made the biggest advancement in the sport to date.
It was awesome to see Reed win again after he was wrote of etc...But no way was it a BETTER ride. I love a come back story, just as much as the last guy. But facts are facts, Reeds win was just not as dominant.

Its not about the lap times. Its about the ride. Why did it take Reed till like lap 18 to get the lead, from a way better start? Stewart did it further back in less laps. I understand your not a big fan of Stewart, but come on man how could you even try and compare the 2 races? Lord blinders!

I agree, makes me think of the Daytona race when he ran RC down.

Stewart and barcia were even on the rest of the track.

I dunno about that. I was sitting directly across from you, in the whoops section, and JS7 cruised around a few riders there as well, and even switched lines entering the whoops and still managed to pass Barcia there. And I don't think Barcia was triple-tripling the split section of track (I think he was 2-3-1).

Anyway, I don't think JS7's domination was as much about the lap times as it was how quickly he passed the top riders after he caught them. He didn't have to follow them around for 3 laps. Zzzzzzip, he was just by them like he was passing lappers.

It's funny how all of these amazing rides from other riders come up, but there isn't much proof of them. Sure, Reed had great rides as did RC, but you would be hard pressed to find someone that has started in 15th and made the pass for first on lap 15, without one of the front runners going down. Not to mention the track was a difficult track.

It's apparent that some don't want to give James the credit that he earned for that ride. Just the fact that we are still talking about it should tell you how spectacular it was.

Let's not forget Barcia was leading on lap 6, and Stewart was buried in the pack on lap 6 when they both set their fastest times.

Barcia turned just as fast of a lap time as Stewart, both of their bests were on lap 6. How did that happen? He rode great, but on TV it looked like like nobody was even close.
I thought that too. But I watched the race again and although he was in 14th, he wasn't crazy far behind in terms of track position. Normally passing 13 people would be hard no matter how much ground you make up, but if anyone cann pass without taking long.....

Science! OK....statistics. If we are going to compare "numbers"...then do it right.

You can not just look at fastest laps...look at average and more importantly, std deviation. Std dev gives you an idea how consistent the rider was riding.

JS7 Ave = 52.31s
JS7 Std Dev = 1.21s

JB51 Ave = 52.76s
JB51 Std Dev = 1.43s

RD5 Ave = 52.79s
RD5 Std Dev = 1.21s

Consistency:
Barica made one pass from lap 2 to lap 20. RD made two. Stew made 11. While making 11 passes...Stew had a Std deviation in lap times 0.2s lower than Barcia, and the same as RD. So that gives you an idea that Stew was going faster than everyone else, while not riding too close to his own limit. He was just as consistent passing 11 guys...as RD5 was mostly riding alone.

Speed:
Stews fastest lap was not out there, because he was riding consistent. If he had started side by side Barcia...and ran the same speed he ran while passing 11 guys....he would have ended up 8.55 clear of Barcia. But of course...he could have gone a bit faster if he did not have to pass people...so perhaps 10s clear....

Fast Laps:
On lap 6, Stew was passing WP40...and that is when he set his fast lap. It did not look like WP slowed him down...so perhaps JB wins the 'fast lap battle'...but JB was inconsistent. He completely blew the long rythm section a bunch of times. He could hardly even get off the 1st step off clean. Setting fast lap does not do you much good if you are so close to your skill limit that one lap you do it...then the next you completely blow the timing and lose 1s.

Also...look at lap times later in the race when it was a Stew / JB battle straight up. JS passed RD on lap 12.

Crunch time Toronto...JS vs JB
Lap 13 JS faster by 2.05
Lap 14 JS faster by 0.81
Lap 15 JS faster by 2.01
Lap 16 JS faster by 0.66
Lap 18 JS faster by 0.81
Lap 19 JS faster by 0.60
Lap 20 JS slower by .01

Here is Reed vs Stew at the end of A2...

Crunch time A2 CR vs JS
Lap 15 CR faster by 0.59
Lap 16 CR slower by 0.28
Lap 18 CR faster by 1.02
Lap 19 CR faster by 2.47
Lap 20 CR faster by .23

That race made me cry!

Two jump sections and balls out through the whoop section.

That triple over the on off and the goddamn rhythm section... Which I bet Reed could have done if he was more comfortable!

Cry cry cry... hahaha

I don't follow your point here StartedTooLate. I wasn't trying to "do it right" or avoid proper statistics, I was just showing the lap times per lap in order in plain text instead of on a graph. Statistician speak gives me wood though, so thanks for that.

One thing you have to remember is that the video is of James in his prime. He will be 29 this year. He's on the down side and he caught and passed the fastest SX riders in the world like they were standing still. That makes the ride even that much more amazing.

It's impossible to prove something to someone who is convinced their guy to be the most incredible ever. P just asked me to prove that other riders in the history of Supercross have had amazing rides. I'm not sure where I even go with that so I won't.

When we did the graphs, and seeing how much smoother JS7 was over Barcia, I was surprised Barcia's fastest lap was so close to James'. Justin must of been killing it everywhere else other than the two rhythm sections. Overall, though, James' average lap-time was almost a 1/2 sec faster than Barcia.

Hey bro, you're all twisted up.

Kept screwing up the long rhythm lane?

I did some analysis after the race since there was no timing and scoring on the TV feed. I wanted to see how far back James was, and how he had to ride to catch up to and pass Barcia. I had to work backwards, but Stewart was farthest off Barcia on Lap 5, and was 11.4 seconds faster than Barcia over laps 6-20. Of course Roczen was the leader for the first 3 laps. This would look better in tabular format, but I couldn't get the spacing to stay.

Just check out the Main Event Lap Time Graphs and it shows you everything you need to know. Also, if you click out everyone else, you can just run JS7 vs Barcia one-on-one.

Here's a screen shot, but if you go to post you can run cursor over lives to view times.

That is pretty cool. I didn`t know you can simply unclick a rider and compare just two of them. Good job.

Feld has asked for a lot more "sensationalism" and drama these days.

They also forbid the announcers from using nicknames of the riders.

Great ride but rc, mc, and the rest of the greats never would consider their best ride to be when their main competiton was fighting back vomit or being injured. Rv was about 1.4 secs faster than the next fastest at daytona. That was dominant as well but i guess lil redheads cant get stewy love. I really like james and have since i realized it wasnt fair to not root for a class guy and great racer bc of fanboys with a mancrush being annoying. Rc at millville was imho a more dominant ride. Great ride by js7 but a lil over gushing going on here.

The only way for RC to have been more dominant at Millville, he would have had to lap himself.

It is all FELD and the TV producers. They are the ones talking in the ear of Emig, RC and KDub, telling them to say this stupid shit...and create buzz... It is comical.

The stupid "is Stewart one of the greatest" poll for instance....KDub talked to Matthes about that Sat Morning. The way KDub told Matthes...was "you are not going to believe the stupid poll they are making us do". He was almost disgusted with it. Same deal two races ago...Emig was all high on KRoc...claiming he would win 4 more races. Please... That was not Emig...that was the producers telling him to say that. It is all an attempt to create drama and buzz where there is none.

Dont forget FELDs background. They are circus promoters....
