Definitely for looking at and not riding if the BASS is hooked up. Did anyone ride more than a lap or two with that still hooked up?

Aaaah, the fasteners on the engine.... I remember them well! Not only was there no quick-change clutch cover, you had to deal with PHILLIPS HEAD screws to remove the right side engine cover! Fun times.

Yes those Phillips head screws on the engine cover suck, very hard to get tight enough without stripping but they are original.

You do have one of these don't you? Never strip another Phillips head, just don't over torque by pounding the daylights out of them.Smile

In 1988, a buddy had an new YZ125; lots of Houston was still undeveloped then, so a 40-minute drive would get you into unincorpated land, easily. That '88 was an absolute beast of a wheelie machine. If memory serves, it was externally the same as your '87, except the shrouds were white. Boy did we have ever have a lot of fun with that bike, cutting classes and riding through the afternoons.

The '86-'88 YZ125s were a huge step forward for Yamaha. Steve Matthes has a column on PulpMX devoted to the problems he and his older brother had with their '85 YZ125. I didn't own one, but I had an '84 KX125 that had been a bought new in December '85. In a drag race, I would beat or completely destroy any new '85 YZ125, the margin was less against the ported ones but the outcome was the same (of course, I weighed like 90 pounds-- which helped).

Back in 1986 I subscribed to Dirt Bike (and MXA), and I remember very well the day when the issue with the test rider tossing a pre-pro '86 YZ125 around on a beach arrived. It was like the space shuttle on the cover of a magazine -- especially compared to those two off years. And the '86-'88 YZ125s still look fantastic today.

@barkhard696 - IIRC, the Dirt Bike test rider was Steve Schmitz and the venue was Pismo Beach.

Good eye for the BASS Newman. I unhooked mine on my 250. I couldnt tell any difference till I sent the shock off to be re-valved,...and for the life of me 'Ive been racking my brain and I cant remember who did the revalve. Racetech probably. I wanna say I did some sort of Terry something kit to the forks too.

That chain buffer at the front of the swingarm was a clacker. Noisey hard plastic.

I have to compliment the build guy on how nice those lower fork legs look. Swingarm too, very clean.
