He isn't having any fun. Beaten by a Kawasaki "non-factory" rider AND by his youthful training partner. He's still the points leader, but he's got to be second guessing himself on taking 94 on as a training partner. The way Villopoto was talking when he was first asked about taking Kenny on as a training partner was something like "it's his first year on the big bikes and it will be good for him to have someone faster to chase in training" or something to that effect.

Nah. Sometimes you're not going to be the fastest guy, settle for a podium. Reed and Roczen looked like the only guys really going for it. Awesome to watch

i think we are seeing a new RV. Conservative like Dungey. I'd rather see him WFO!

East coast RV will up his aggressiveness. He doesn't feel comfortable pushing too much on the hard pack dirt on west coast. Just look at previous years. He always wrecks when he pushes too hard on it

Peely nailed it.

That wasn't a track you could push the edge on, RV knows 3rd > crash and whatever.
We are just getting to see some great racing and different guys stepping it up accordingly.

I think RV rode within his limits on a night where EVERY rider mentioned how slick the track was.

Eh...I don't know??? I think Villo is just trying to get off the west coast races without having to make up a huge points deficit. We all know he doesn't do his best riding on slippery tracks. He knew he wasn't the fastest guy last night without pushing past his traction limits!
It was clear to me that he was just trying to conserve the second stewert and dungey weren't behind him any more and he dropped off the lead pace by A LOT!

I think last night was Poto smartest ride of the season. Everyone was talking about how slick it was, once he knew he had a podium locked down...he eased back. Smart ride

I think James hit the nail on the head in regards to RV. From Racerhead:

“I watch Ryan, and I can tell he’s in the same situation I was,” said James. “It’s expected from a lot of people. And when it’s expected from that many people around you, it’s hard to be like, ‘Oh my God, I just won a race again!’ when everyone around you is just like ‘It’s expected.’ Trust me, my team expects me to win races, but they also understand that it’s harder to come by. They’ve seen me have success and they’ve seen me have failures, and they’ve seen me not change. I put in the same effort I did winning Atlanta and having a DNF on the starting gate in Dallas. I came back to the test track Monday morning and put in my work.”

But as James says, don’t confuse his new attitude with being complacent. He still wants very much to climb back up to where he was, and win this title. “But I can see it in Ryan’s eyes, that’s he’s probably not enjoying it as much as he should, and I hope he doesn’t [laughs]! It’s my job to make sure he doesn’t!”

These kids (and their team) are smart. Being consistent and getting on the box is keeping your eye on the big picture. You wont win them all, but get on the box every weekend you might win the one that counts, the title.
great racing.

I don't think this is a good season to be pushing the pace when you're not feeling it. RV consistently struggles on the Anaheim dirt and I think we will see a different RV after Dallas. I think reed is going to be a stubborn bastard this season though and make it hell on RV.

RV raced smart. 3rd place is a nice finish when you're going for the championship. Reed and Roczen were in the zone last night. I even like Barcia pacing himself for a 4th place. It's a long season.

He can;t win the championship at A3, so why go over the edge then?

Nah he did it last year when James got a win...everyone was was trippling a section less poto and we all know he could have. Then on the box he pretty much said He isn't worried about James or something to that point and everyone including RC criticisized him for not going for it and getting the points.

He waxed everyone something fierce the next weekend and 2013 seemed to work out just fine- nothing new

I think in the end he'll grab the 014 title..

Exactly man. Last week in Oakland he was loving the dirt and won without doing the much vaunted "quad". This week, he saw how slick the track was (pointed out my many riders) and ran Reed's and Roczen's pace no problem, but choose not to push it and took 3rd place and the 20 points that went with it.

Ask Cole Seely how slick the track was, by the way. He was leading the 250 main and probably would have won it, but washed out his front end in one of those slick corners. Guess who was watching that race. Do you think he made note of that? I guarantee he did.

So he sees that Stewart and Dungey have gone down behind him, and that Barcia is not going to catch him. 3rd place was his for the taking. Or he can push it on a track that was not conducive to pushing, and gamble 20 golden points toward the big goal he has his sights set on.

A few questions:

1. Do you think his fitness is the reason he slowed on those last few laps of the race? Why? Can you name another time that has ever been the case?

2. Do you think Reed and Roczen's pace was so much faster that they "gapped" him? If so, why was he able to run their pace for 17 laps or so?

What we saw was a champion with talent, skill, fitness, and heart ride a very smart race. Very hard to beat that combo. He was a rookie in 2009. Broke his leg on that terrible jump in St. Louis in 2010. Since then, good luck beating him for the championship.

Fitness? No way- I think a lot of people find RV's interviews boring but I like his honesty when he wins and when in defeat. Racerx has a good recap and in it he says that that Anaheim dirt is probably the toughest for him to ride, with his style etc. He says that he did his best to stay with those guys until around lap 15 but he didn't want to push it and go down. We all know what RV is capable of and it doesnt take anything away from CR and Roczen. They raced amazing and they were able to handle the terrain better. RV was smart and recognized his weekness and took 3rd he got beat no doubt- could he have tried to wick it up for a win? maybe but the odds would have been him on the ground-

He is dangerous because he has the raw speed and some dense tissue between his ears IMO

Last year he finished 8th at A3 and at this point in the series he was in 4th place 17 points behind 1st (Millsaps)

This is exactly right!

I can't wait until they get out of drought ridden Cali, so the CHAMP can get to work. It will be lights out for those fools and Reed will be drawing on his 401k...

I said it a couple weeks ago....I think we're seeing a very different RV ths year, mature, less of a risk taker. He knows he's the fastest guy out there. He doesn't need to win every race, or what the old RV would display and that's win every race by 20+ seconds, nope consistsency wins championships and were seeing a more calculating champ that will take a 3rd as opposed to putting it on the deck finishing 8th, or worse dnf, when he's not totally feeling it.

Last thing anybody wants is for villo to be in the points lead heading east. Past years he's dug himself a hole he's had to climb out of right off the bat. You know he has to be feeling good when comparing his years past to his current situation. And that's bad news for his company

I wonder how much of his struggles on hard pack (if you can call leading the series struggling) are set up related. It was mentioned in the telecast how important bike set up would be on a track like what they encountered, and you constantly keep hearing RV talking about how he runs the same basic tyre set up all year round, Anaheim to Southwick. Just wondering if maybe he's giving up a bit by sticking with the same tyre.

I wouldnt nescesarily change this, given the success he's had, but you look at the other guys chopping and changing to perfect the set up and it seems like RV just has his pet tyre and runs it everywhere no matter what track conditions.

Take a look back at last year and see how Villopoto did the first few rounds and where he was standing in the points. Then look at the end of the season and how he was taking home win after win. Aah...young Padawan you still have very much to learn, just wait and see.

Good god does anyone understand how big of a difference the dirt makes? Whether it is his style, or his bike set up, RV is not at his best on the slick dirt. JS also struggled in the main...you could see him losing the rear badly. But go back to Oakland....a medium grip track. Where was RV there? JS? Reed? We have one more race with this slick dirt...and odd are RV will have the points lead when we leave there. Once we get to the higher grip tracks...things are going to look a lot like Oakland for much of the rest of the season. Based on what I have seen from JS....I think the points at seasons end will be:

RV
JS
CR

I caught an RV tweet earlier today, that said, he was glad to get out of A3 with a 3rd. The track was so slick.

We all know, if you like to steer with the rear wheel, you can't have slick conditions.

If San Diego is anything like the A's(1)(2)(3) I wouldn't be so sure RV's leaving Cali with the points lead/red plate!

But on the other hand, his current win percentage since 2010(?) is a lil' higher than 50% and... since he just lost,
it'll be his night next weekend!! I'm not "stamping" anything or preDICKting a win, jus' being a statistician for the fun
of it Wink

Whatever happens, the racing has been awesome with surprises everywhere and great heat and semi races. All
you can ask for, really Smile

True...if Chad and RV go 1-2, then RV heads east one point down. To beat RV...Chad needs to be in the place Millsaps was last year vs RV.
