GoPro / Contour

Edited Date/Time 1/30/2014 11:16am
I had a contour previously, and now I have a GoPro H3 black (due to a crash that knocked my camera off, at which point the rest of the pack did laps on it while I tried to remember who I was). Anyways, my issue is my gopro vids always look slow compared to my contour vids. I know I am not a rocket on a bike but some of my gopro vids look slowed down. Is is just a bigger fish eye on the gopro camera? Is there a way to adjust it?

I understand you can have different frame rates and resolutions on the gopro? You might have it on the wrong setting?

The 3+ black has Superview, Ultra wide, Med and narrow views I believe.

I have it and I think its awesome. I really thought the superview footage looked fast as shit.

It is probably set at 30 FPS (Frames Per Second). You can switch it to 60 FPS which will increase your speed and resolution. However, it will also use more space on your SD card and create bigger files, so keep that in mind.

I am currently recording at 1080/60, which is like 3 hrs on my 64gb card. I drop it down to 720 if I am doing longer trail rides.

I will try out the narrow view this weekend and see if it helps. I dont have the plus so no superview

It looks slower because of the wide angle view. It is not because of the frame rate. Post video from both

I look slow if someone else has one pointed at me? And oddly enough, it doesn't matter which brand!Blush

Point it backwards, and use it to slow the riders behind you. Wink

The only time I use 60 fps is if I plan on doing slow motion segments. Those look better once you've slowed it down. If you're just shooting regular video, I'd use 30 fps.

As Ketchum said, it is the wide angle lens. The lens also flattens out the terrain, making jumps, hills, nasty stuff look like a parking lot. Without the wide angle, you would not get the view that makes having a helmet cam seem like you are there.

If you have a SLR camera, put a 10-18mm lens on the camera and shoot some pics of hills, mountains, a city. Then take the same pics with 100-300mm telephoto lens. The wide angle flattens and includes everything in the photo. The tele compresses the image in a line straight in front of the lens and makes it all look bigger, more crowded and if moving like in video, strreaming by the sides faster.

Think about driving 35mph up a mountain road where it looks like things are flying by you really fast. That's a zoomed lens because you are so close to the hills.

Now think of flying over those mountains in a plane doing 550mph. The mountains seen to be going by very slowly from 35000 feet. That's a gorpo wide angle lens

Exactly what I did here for slow motion. Shoot in 60fps then just convert it to 30fps.

720 at 30fps seems to be the best compromise on our Contour. 1080 isn't as wide angle (130 I believe) but better resolution. We all look slow compared to watching the GoPro shots from the races. I do like however the fact that even the supercross jumps look relatively flat on a helmet cam too!

This is 720/30. If you select HD on YouTube, it's not a bad picture. Doesn't seem to take too much memory either, nor time to upload with a decent connection speed.

The video always turns out better though if you follow someone. It puts things in perspective.

Sharkey just got one of the new GoPros though and the color is very vivid. I think it has to do with the high pixel rate. I think he said its 12 megapixel.

I guess I have no idea how to embed a link, or delete an effed up post. Sorry.

Hey Aaron.....so this is Horn Rapids? I live about 3hrs away and have never been there.....unbelievable! I have got to get my ass up there.....as that track looks like a lot of fun. I've heard a lot about it from all my friends and I've just never made it.

You see Sharkey....tell him Jeffro said hello! Maybe I can get up there here in the next month or two and do some riding with you guys.

Sounds good man! we've been going every other weekend. It's a great winter riding spot so I guess it's worth the 245 miles one way.

Here is a video I made with my gopro Hero HD. The first version. It's on a mountain bike so you know it's not that fast. Some shots look very fast because there are bushes right beside me on both sides. Then when we get on the fire road it looks flat and boring but it's really steep and very rocky. The whole section after the horses is known as "Valley of Death" but it really doesn't look all that bad....

thanks for the information! as far as slow motion and frame rates i had no idea, so thanks!! i have an older samsung and it shoots decent video and is low profile like a contour or a replay. i am finally about to be able to ride again soon and will probably just buy a Replay because of the 135% (narrower than gopro and others) view and the lower profile of the actual camera. i wore a friends gopro and could not get used to the camera catching wind and pulling my little head back! haha!!
