70's Kami... Doing a History... Need some help!

Edited Date/Time 11/3/2021 5:13pm
Hi. I am new to your sight, just signed up tonight. I am here hope'n I can get some assistance! First a little about me, I am mostly into Yamaha Enduro's from late 60's to late 70's newest. I have several and love these old Yammies. Recently I went on a "search and rescue" of an old '76 DT400. When I got there the bike was HEAVILY modified and I was not even really interested.... Until I saw the bike setting in the shed next to it...... Had never heard of one before..... A Kami KA-100. I saw it and had to have it. Long story short I was able to talk the man out of it (hadda buy both bikes). Now I am interested in trying to do a company history, as there is NOTHING on the net about this short lived company (around 5 years and was gone).
The reason for this post is I am looking for someone who has a couple old Mini Cycle Magazines. I am looking especially for the July 1972 issue. There is an article on Kami's in it.... Supposed to be the "Low Down" on the new company. Also looking for the June 1973 issue as there is another article on Kami's in it.
I would LOVE to have real copys of these magazines and if someone has extras I would be interested in buying them (if I can afford them). I would also be interested if someone would make copys of the articles in question from magazines they have and don't want to part with. I would gladly pay for copy fees and postage. Either way, let me know what you have.
Just an FYI, I know that there are copys of these mags right now on Ebay. I simply cannot afford to spend $50+ for one and $40+ for the other.
Thanks in advance to all who reply, and I hope someone out there can help me out.

p.s. The pic I have as my profile is my Kami. I hope you guys like it!!

I bought a locked up Kami 80 back in the mid 70s. It was the green dirt model and I know they were made by Penton but I never got it running. I have never seen another one and finding pics on the net is almost impossible. If i knew how rare they were I might not have sold it to another dippy kid like myself.I bet its still laying around in Ponca City OK in a shed or barn, next time I am down there I will look up the guy I sold it to as he still lives on the same farm and it may still be there.

Back in the early - mid 70's, we had an amusement center with a couple of go cart tracks, and a small oval dirt bike track. Their fleet was made up of Kami's. Man,did those things ever get thrashed. They must of had 20 of them, at least.

Thanks for the responses. So far I have found and bought 2 original Kami Parts Break Down books, an original owners manual (its for an 80 but close enough for me!!), an issue of Cycle Guide that has a full page ad (the black and white above is a copy of that ad, I bought the mag from "Dads" which is shown written on the above ad) and I own a copy of the color pic above also, bought off ebay. Other than that its hard to find much on them. As far as the Penton, I have seen that also on the net that there was some relation, but they are really close reletive's to the Chaparral bikes, very simular to Indian dirtbikes, kinda simular to Hodaka's, Shin San Tong, and Alsport bikes. The motors are Fuji and other bikes that used them were Rupp on some of their mini bikes and also Gemini. All have simular designs but none appear to be "identical".
Again, I appreciate any/all responses and any info someone may find and want to share.

On that ad posted above is GEM PRODUCTS.. They were a dealer for this bike in Illinois. Thats were I first saw one back in the day. GEM is still in business, they may just have some old literature laying around. 1-630-653-1800

Thanks, I have tried to contact all of the above dealers. I will try the # you have listed, thanks. The "Tote Gote" dealer is still in business as well as the Suzuki Dealer in Texas. I talked to the owner of the Tote Gote shop in Colorado, but he has only owned the biz about 25 years so he really knows nothing other than when he was a kid he remembers the bikes setting out front and his dad taking him by to look at them. I sent an email to the Suzuki dealer with no response as of yet.

This post brings back some good memories. I met a neighbor kid who was riding his Kami 100 back in about 77 or 78 and we became best friends and put many miles on many bikes together in the years since. I just remember it looked like a Chapparell and he kept braking the frame on the front left downtube and we lit it on fire good once in the garage because we laid it down to weld the frame (again) and gas leaked out of the tank and lit it up. good times.

That's one way to protect the signal lights. Good job on the resto.

Thanks. I have an original "ad" from Mini Cycle Magazine that shows the front turn signals on the top, so that is how I did them! Here is a pic of the ad!

If anyone needs tank stickers for their Kami (ones like on my KA 100) I had extras made. I also have stickers for the oil tank on KA 100's.

Yeah I found one of those on eBay. I'm just lost on the wiring because its missing the signals and some wires. That's why I've been trying to find a owners manual and wiring diagram for them.

Yes, I am still here.
I recently aquired a KA-100 just like yours.I have noticed your back sprocket looks different than mine.Is yours original? If not from what type bike did you use the sprocket/rear rim from?Niice bike by the way.I am currently restoring mine.
5/21/2014 5:03am
It is the one that was on the bike and since it only has just over 1000 miles on it I presume it to be original. I have no idea where you could get a replacement. I have been told that the wheels are nearly identical to Honda, but........ I also know that the gauge, headlight and tail light are same as early Suzuki (just don't have the Suzuki name on them). I do have a Gemini and a Chapparal that are both parts bikes. They are simular in many ways. I don't know if the sprockets are the same but I can look. I have no idea if they are better than what you have either soooo... Another thought would be to take your sprocket to a machine shop, have it cut down and have a new gear welded too it?? Just a thought.

Good Luck!

How many teeth does yor rear sproket have?Mine has 52 and is solid like the one in the original ad.

Yours may very well be original. From what I can find out Kami bought parts from just about anyone who would sell them what they needed. I will count mine as soon as I get a chance and let you know.

Oilbeast I just bought 3 kami ka100 bike pulled out of barn for $350 for the three I'm excited. I cleaned the. Carb gas tank petcock and air filter and it started. Right up but is high revved he throttle is stuck open so a little more work left to do. That is the sprocket that I have on my three bikes. Do you all know what the value is of these bike or where to get them appraised or an idea of how to find the value of them? How about converting them to a 12v instead if the 6 v how difficult would it be to do that conversion?

Not sure of the worth or about a 12v conversion. My bike is all apart.Do you have any parts you would sell?
5/29/2014 5:17am
Congrats Dakami! That is a decent price if the bike is complete and not all beat up. To convert to 12 volt would be nearly impossible as the charging system is 6 volt, don't know where you would find conversion stator, etc. As to value, they are only valuable to someone who wants one. I know that sound like a dumb statement, but there is very little interest in them unless you find someone interested in an "obscure Jap bike". They were (to be honest) a poorly built bike that was a "throw away". That being said, If I were to even consider selling mine I would want $1000 or more for it, but it is (for the most part) fully restored as you can see in the pix. Value is up to the interest of the buyer. I have one person in my bike club that would likely pay just about anything I asked (within reason) for my Kami and has basically told me that. He is starting a museum of motorcycles and the Kami is scarce sooooo........

Post some pix!

Also.... The slide in my carb was stuck also when I got it. I tried to soak it loose with no luck. A good friend that repairs old bikes told me to take a propane torch and heat the carb body up. He said it would slide right out most likely. I was worried about melting the pot metal body, but carefully tried it. It worked GREAT!! Doesn't take a LOT of heat, just get it really good and warm and the slide came right out!

Good Luck!

Ok that makes sense. All the bike are complete but one has been wrecked and needs a new top bracket for the fork tree new exhaust and a kick start pedal. I'll take some pics and post them. The slide comes out. Of the carb but the. Throttle cable on it is really tight and holds it open.. I was wondering about the conversion because there is just a cluster of wires and I don't know what are what wires and the battery I got which is nearly identical to the original has a plastic clip and there isn't one on my bike.

Olbeast I'm not sure I what I'm wanting to do with the three bikes heat I know I can more than likely get 2 runners possibly 3 with more work in the third. I know that the indian diets bikes from the same year used this same motor and there are parts on ebay under vintage indian dirtbike parts or something to that effect a google search for the indian parts will bring some stuff up. Rupp and Chaparral also had the same motor.

My slide was stuck also. I put my carb in a pot of boiling lemon juice for 10 minutes then hit it with some carb cleaner and that cleaned it up perfectly.

That's a nasty carb! Are the frames of kamis built well? Are they strong or did they typically have problems with the frame welds?
