Chad say's...

Talk about the track

Track was gnarly. I’m “that guy” I guess, but I hate these tracks. Honestly, I think they’re terrible. If my track builder built these tracks I wouldn’t pay him. I did a little bit of research, probably like everybody did, and you hear it’s Anaheim A1 of 2001 and I actually walked the track with Mark Barnett, who built that ’01 track and he’s just like, “What the hell is this track?” And I said, “Welcome to the shit that we get every weekend.” They’re way too fast. Look at the lap times. We were doing 51s or whatever it was. In 2001 they were doing 1:02s, and that’s not because the bikes are better. That’s literally because the tracks were way more difficult [back then]. You had to be precise, you had to be technical. Now it’s about pretty much getting your balls and sacking up and going wide open. For me that’s not fun. I’m more of a technical guy, I enjoy that challenge. And it was dry. Obviously the weather, we haven’t had any rain or anything like that. It’s been super hot and windy this week. That I’m not too concerned about— you’ve got everything going against you when you’re in California and it’s hot and it’s windy and all that kind of stuff. But as far as the track, it didn’t replicate 2001 like it was supposed to.

Agree. Tracks suck nowadays. They used to send riders up in the air now they send them forward.

Just move the jumps closer to the turn and make them a bit bigger. These four foot high jumps that send them 60 feet at 40mph have to stop. #injuries

Yeah, riding those tracks on your Keyboard 750 has to be a bitch.

How much of it is the tracks changing, and how much is bikes and technique changing over time?

Hashtags don't work on Vital and they make you look like a jackass.

I'm in no position to argue with Reed, but the bikes have gotten better, and so have the riders. If you put Reed on a 2001 YZ250 on that track I imagine his lap time would climb a fair bit...

Could live TV mean shortly lap times? I'm sure it plays a part in it... But I'm not going to bitch, because waiting 2 to 3 weeks to watch the races used to suck! I thought the racing was the best it's been in a long time, at A2.

So Chad F'n Reed doesn't know what he's talking about? Or is it just protocol to bash a Vitard?Laughing

I'd rather see these Cats manuver a technical track than the balls out flying which IMO evens things out in case you don't get the start...

I didn't get the impression that Chad was saying the bikes haven't gotten better. I think he was just saying that the lap times are faster because of the track design, not solely because the bikes are better now.

Chad has always let his opinion be known about his love for technical tracks.

I could see the new bike making him 2-3 secs faster....but 11? No way.

I was standing there, I heard him say that. He rides the tracks, I don't. But I do think it's part of the evolution, and we both have our opinion. Smile

Was it more technical because the track was more challenging or because it was more challenging on a two stroke? You certainly had to be more precise on them, and they weren't as fast as the 450s

The tracks are just different, they have continually changed since the beginning. Now is no different. 70's to 80's to 90's to 00's to 10's. Ever changing.

It looked so steep to me. The 250 LCQ didn't make the track look easy.

Tracks have been awful this year IMO. But there is only so much they can do I guess.

I think what Chad's is saying is that he wants separation instead of just balls out fast versus technical skill it's really no fun if everybody's going the same speed...

I know that I miss the jumps that shoot you high, not far. I used to race the Seattle SX (amateur) every year in the Kingdome during the 80s and 90s. The jumps were what I would call "ladder steep" and intimidating as all hell as an amatuer, but were a treat to watch the professionals hit.

(450s + one-line hardpack) - over/under = 11 seconds per lap.

But Chad's point still resonates: tracks designs should intentionally incorporate multiple lines. While #22 did show everyone the fast way around the track, it may have also highlighted the need for perfect bike set-up. Under less-than-optimal traction situations it's imperative that the bike's tire/suspension/power combination match the task at hand. Recovering from a front-wheel slide in loamy conditions is one thing; we all know the result when the same thing happens on a slick course.

I thought Phoenix was awesome. Longer lap times and very difficult sections. I like tracks where many riders look uncomfortable and that 3-3-3 section did just that imo of course.

So would the answer be combined high speed and technical sections allowing rider to make up time on both?...

I ride the K750 mac, its much better than the stocker. When I type on this sucker it always sounds like I spent last nite at a Holiday Inn Express.

I say, we put them all on 2001 yz250's and make them jump straight and not scrub and see. Smile

It would be interesting to really see what the lap times were in 2001. I
