I was going through some old race programs to put on eBay and came across the 1998 CMC Golden State Series program. Inside they list GSS winners of all the previous years and in 1990 MIke Healey won the Golden State Series Championship in ALL THREE CLASSES! That's championships in 125, 250 and 500cc Pro, in an eight race series.

Now, the series may not have been as star-studded then as it was during the earlier years, but winning all three pro classes in any series is pretty badass and requires some serious commitment. The list only shows the champions, so I don't know who he beat, but he also backed it up with the 500 championship in 1991, and the 125 and 250 championships in 1992. I think it was about that time that he split for Europe, where he finished 2nd in the world at least once.

Anyway, I just remember how hard those GSS races were, (at least in 77-81 when I raced them), and it impressed me.

No easy feat for sure.........heck even through the mis 90's there were still pretty deep fields. It sure makes me sad when you go to these races these days and sometimes you don't even get four guys.

That's pretty cool. Some riders don't even let fans know that they even exist. Good for you.

In the mid 90s we had quilifiers at some of the gfi winter series races. I remember Craig Decker winning some NorCal rounds.

Mike Healy raced the 97 4 stroke nationals with me and he was really cool to me and my dad we raced a KTM 620 and he was racing a tricked out Honda xr400. LMAO!! Good times..

There were some fast guys in the Goldenstate series from the mid 80's through the early 90's. Mx Keid, Bradshaw, Ward, Lamson, MC, Johnson, Dymond, Glover, Vohlands, Brooks, Craig, Kalos and more. I can remember having qualifiers at GH in the 125 class! I wrenched on all 3 bikes for Mike that year and the 250 and 500 for 1991 and his Suzuki 125 and 250 in 1992. We traveled from San Diego to Washougal in those 3 years causing havoc in our wake. lol Everyone thinks of Mike as a bad ass but in real life Mike is a good guy. A bit of a mama's boy who wouldn't hurt a fly! Don't let the tats fool you. Between Mike getting hooked on pain meds and losing his dad things went south fast. If you want to see one of Mikes best races find 1 of these 6. Steel City 1992 He raced a clapped out rm125 to win the second moto ahead of Henry, Emig, L. Ward, Hughes, Dubach, MC, Antunez. The 250 gp of france and San Marino in 1991. 1985 Anaheim 125 SX and both the 1989 Commotion by the ocean (Beating JMB 111 and Micky Dymond) And the 1993 Commotion by the Ocean (Beating Lamson.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkbq5vkIflA at 5.30 Emig hits the bridge

I raced the 125 pro class in 1990 at the Golden State Nationals, and I remember at Hangtown that year mike had one of those ysr
50 road bikes that the KTM importer he was riding for at the time, had crammed one of their 250 cc motors into! That thing was
completely insane, just lit the tire up constantly. He let me ride it and I can say it was the scariest thing I have ever ridden!! Mike was on fire that year, had some good battles with Keidrowski,Lamson, etc. I got to ride and hang out with mike during that series and he was super nice and gave me some great advice for me being a rookie pro. Then in1991 McGrath got the Peak Honda ride and put the hurt on everyone, winning both 125 & 250 classes at most of the round he hit. Also made some serious cash too cause Honda had the 5000$ cash payout for 1st in all pro classes!! The good old days hahah

Mike was a good guy. We hung out quite a bit when he was not in Europe. He did have the tats and almost everybody judged him by his looks, but he didn't fit the image. I raced with him for over 15 years and we battled a bunch from 60cc to 500cc Last I heard he was in some trouble. I wish him nothing but the best. I hope he can turn himself around...

WOW. Awesome story, bro Whistling

Can you tell us another one about someone who almost did something.........????

Healy was a bad ass. I remember in 85 or 86 he would show up to a local CRC race on his Cagiva and just flat haul ass!!! He was an idol man....tattoos, I loved the flames on one of his ankles that went up tha calve. As a kid riding 80's Mike was the shit!

Speaking of Goldenstates....Was it 86 that Ron Lechein popped Johnson in the mouth on the finish line? That was chaos in the pits...super exciting!!! I remember that, got Ricky Ryans goggles, Jeff Emigs jersey (he was on 80's) and Jeff Wards jersey from that day. The life of a kid..... good times.

I broke my leg in '88 during the CMC at Carlsbad. Unfortunately, one of the highlights of my career I try not to think about.

Merry Christmas to all!

No hard feelings. Your story was pretty cool, it had me reading with interest , it was just very anti-climatic, that's all.

You missed the point... didn't matter if he jumped it or not, (he may have, I had to leave), but he was cutting across and through the track at a rate of speed that was 2x's what everyone else was actually doing ON the TRACK, and then locking up both wheels, bottoming the suspension, and whatever else to get stopped before the hit. It was quite the little spectacle on a midweek morning at elsinore.

Guess you had to be there, and you weren't so.. sorry to waste the 10 seconds of your life it took to read my post. Or, in your case, the minute and a half... sound it out bro... Smile

I rode that Yamaha YSR 50 at Hangtown. It was Insane! Ktm 250cc stuffed into it. Me an Healey stayed up In Sac town for the week between the 2 north rounds. I had an Orange Ford van he called the Scooby Mobile. We went out nightly for our conditioning program. Here were the conditioning program rules.

1. No more then 2 drinks per night. (Very big ones mostly Jack)

2. Find girls to dance with and don't stop for 30 min (Repeat)

We brought the answering machine from the house and plugged it into the hotel room so we could screen calls and get voicemail.

Mike was a great guy! Mike was a true player! I can remember going to South Coast Plaza, A leather shop in downtown Huntington beach and Laguna Tatoo dropping about 5 grand in a few hours.

The best race I saw was The commotion By the Ocean in 1989. On a pre-production KTM 250 he beat JMB on a Factory Honda. The start was red flagged 2 times for Mike jumping the gate. The first time he hopped it and was 10 yards out when it dropped. The second one he tore it out of the holder and it needed to be welded.

I remember Healy showed up to a wild west race in Rock Springs Wy he was so fast and so far out front that he stopped and took a drink in the middle of the track. Once second place caught up he took off again. He was a bad dude on a bike!
