He scored enough points from getting 3rd in the one moto to put himself inside the top 100 overall on the season.

I was really hoping he would keep 28, that was my #, but he couldn't of picked a better second choice (in my eyes).

They are still unofficial 2009 #.s
deReuver probaply rode on a FIM licence, so his points will not count towards a number.

And Wil Hahn will have the # right after his bro Tommy.

That is what everyone said last year when Jeff earned #46, and most people thought he was going to run that #. But Jeff stayed with 801, and I do not see Jeff changing in 09.

These are still unofficial 2009 #.s

Sorry DW your wrong on this one. DeReuver was on an AMA license so he will get a number. Rivas on the other hand was on a FIM license so he won't get an AMA number in 2009. Also Tommy Hahn will be 46 Justin Brayton 47 and Will Hahn 48.

Unless the AMA let's him back in, J-Law will not be racing any number. If they do let him back in, I am sure he will stay with #338 Outoddors! He will sport the #1 Indoors.

I give up on trying to understand this numbering crap.

Can someone explain how Preston is 11 and Voss 13....and Weimer 18, Izzi 19 for that matter? I thought that top 20 numbers were reserved to riders who had previously won a championship and were still active....

I also just read over at motonews Millsaps wants #18 for next season.

Paul737 from motonews came up with this list, and info.

Here’s the list that I came up with. HUGE disclaimer first though:

I say this every year: this list has gotten more and more difficult every year. It has practically become an art form. The permanent numbering system is confusing at best, and Jane at the AMA does her best to decipher it every year. So before you just jump on the "bash the AMA" band wagon, try doing the list yourself sometime and you’ll see what I mean. What may seem obvious to you, is far from it. "Rider such and such has a 3 digit and I know he will keep it....." Now try contacting all of those "obvious" riders in the off season (along with the 3 new permanent number guys), while vacations, honeymoons, overseas races, changing teams, etc. etc. are happening (remember, you can’t just assume that they want to keep it, and in most cases those 3 digits are NOT permanent I.E. Metcalfe, Hansen, Davalos, Morais). Now imagine that one or two riders (or their agents or team managers) just wont call you back and are holding up the entire list. Should everyone else wait until December to for them to make up their minds?!?! The best (and unfortunate) solution is to put them in where they earned, and if they keep their 3 digit, then that number stays open. I know it seems like a shitty deal for the poor privateer sitting at #100, but that is the best that the AMA can do, deal with it (or like I said, try it yourself some time).

Some comments on why the VitalMX list might be different than mine (and I’m not saying mine is right, I used to be able to get it within 1-2, now it could be off by as many as 3-4):

- DeRuver will not hold a two digit because he raced on an International license so he will be removed from the list.
- Neither of us are sure about numbers 10, 18 and 19. We can only assume that these will be thrown back into the mix. I hate to say it, but there is no rhyme or reason here. Jane will defer the decision to the series manager, and in the past (Whitelock) has made some questionable calls in my opinion. So who knows what will happen here, but we’re both assuming that they’re open for use.
- Metcalfe (I believe) will choose his favorite #24 to be his permanent, given the choice (which he earned this year)
- He has Hill taking #75 which obviously was his amateur number. It will be interesting to see if he takes that, or if it’s available, I’d say he would take #18 (but he might know something here that I don’t).
- He has Townley omitted from the list, and I actually think he might be right here as I THINK Townley earned a permanent last year (not positive though).

Other than that, our lists are pretty close (yet probably both still worng!!)

Enjoy,

Paul

Isn't J-Law Eligible for number 5 or 6 outdoors because he won the sx lites title? Or is it only outdoor titles that count?

To answer your question about Preston and Voss. You earn a permanent number by winning a 125 MX title or winning a 250 SX or MX title. You can also earn a permanent number by finishing top ten in the overall points at the end of the year thats counting 125 mx 250 sx and 250 mx points.

125 SX titles do not count towards a permanent number so J-Law can run number 1 on the west or if he rides East he can be number 51 or choose to use 338.

Pauls list has a few problems.

DeRuver was on an AMA license so he will earn a number.

Rivas was on a FIM license so he won't earn an AMA number.

10 18 19 and 21 will be open this year.

BT 101 Did earn a permanent number last year and he picked 101

and as far as RD Hill and Metty i was told at Steel City they were going to take 10 75 and 123 next year. Does not mean it's true tho.

I hope J-Law runs 51. And Izzi's number is kinda of a shock to me.

And I hate new season because now you got to remember all new numbers with riders.

#1 - #9 are reserved for past Champions
#10 - #19 I thought were reserved for riders who have finshed in the top 10 overall in points in the past.

So I think Weimer and Izzi will get #20 and #21. But I could be wrong, it would not be the first time today.

Remember the whole "marketing thing..... interesting how Neck-Car does it. YET every year they change the car up(sometimes weekly different paint schemes) why?

TO SELL MORE SHIT ! !

If the AMA - MX Sports .... whomever... should realize the permanent # system is bogus.

If a rider got a different # and you were a fan, I guarantee you'd pony up the $24 to get that riders shirt for that year. As it is now all I had to do was buy one Larocco, Stewart, Pastrami, etc.....

Does anyone else see the hiow the current system actually REDUCES merchandising?

Todd I agree totally 19 should be on a 10yr moratorium.

I think to much is made of numbers. Let the guys just pick a permanant number. Another reason the sport is hard to follow. Each year changing numbers makes it harder to market a rider. Keep the red background for the champs and do away with the whole numbering system. Seems to work for all other sports.

Permanent numbers are worthless. This is not nascar. Guys don't race for 30 years. Go back to the MOTOCROSS system of numbers. Your only as good as your last seasons results!
