Gaerne SG-12 Questions

Edited Date/Time 11/2/2013 1:10pm
I had a pair of Tech 10s for four years now and they are smoked. I will need new boots for next year. I got a sponsorship offer with Gaerne.

I was wondering what everyone's opinions about them are?

Almost most importantly, how water tight are they? Should I stick with the AStars?

Does water affect the memory foam?

Thanks!

I got the same deal with Gaerne. I went with the SG-10's as so many people I know and others I've asked highly recommended them. I wore them this weekend for the first time and see why so many wear them. I couldn't justify the extra cost for the SG-12's... I'm told the A-Stars wear out soles much faster and I've seen some old SG-10's that are still going well...

If $ isn't an issue, go with the 12's, but if it is, you won't be disappointed with the 10's...

Thanks for the info!

My soles are actually not that bad. Mostly a lot of the sticking has fallen out and they are literally falling apart. I have a hole in the toe from my shifter and, the Achilles protector is gone and half way cracked on the other, holes on the inner side of the heals haha

I've had both sg 10 and sg 12. The tens are awesome boots. But the twelves got them beat by quite a bit. They are the absolute best boots I've ever had. True to size and pretty water resistant. I wouldn't go with anything else.

I was completely unhappy with the last two pairs of Astars that I had several years ago. Wearing the soles out in 6 months seemed ridiculous. Alpinestar is still an Italian company(Italy has long been considered the best manufacturers of offroad boots) but the boots are made in other countries like Thailand and Croatia. When production was moved outside Italy the quality seemed to diminish. I tried several different brands of boots and was blown away by the Gaerne SG-12's. Unless something revolutionary happens to MX boots, I've found the perfect brand for me, Gaerne(made in Italy). Just my two cents.

I've had 4 pair of the SG-10's and on my first pair of SG-12's. I loved my 10's and thought how could there be anything better.....after a year in the 12's......why did I not buy them sooner? That being said my Parts Unlimited rep was in today with the brand new Tech 7 and Tech 10. Both got substantial make overs and extremely comfortable. New buckles are killer. They both have a new Pirelli sole with improved compound and durability. If you do wear out the soles you can send them to A-Stars and get them resoled for $40 for mid sole replacement or $80 for both complete soles and A-Stars pays the return shipping. Just something to think about.

dont get the tech 7s, i thought they looked pretty good and my pair of sg12s were well flogged out after all these years(i got them as soon as they were first released) the tech 7s have lasted 3 rides and ive worn half the heal off one boot and tore a big hole in the inside of the leg part...and sg12s have them beat hands down in every way, needless to say a new pair of sg12s are on the way!

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will go with the sg-12s since ill be able to get them cheaper.

Have anyone done any off road riding with them? I race woods and need something water resistant. Before I rubbed the holes in my tech 10s they kept water out pretty well.

Best boots I've EVER had.

To be fair, I'd have to say the SG10's are the Best Value I've had in a boot. Be sure to try some on and make sure they're not too loose at all.

The 12's are simply RIDICULOUSLY Comfortable.

Good luck!

Sizing is definitely different than A*s. I wear a 12 in Tech 8 and 10s, picked up 12s in SG12 and they were too loose after a couple rides. Sold them on ebay, bought a set of 11's used to see if they would work size wise and they were just a little too small. Alpinestars sizing works with my feet better, so that's what I run. Make sure you can try a pair on before buying.

i have a mate who switched from tech10 to the sg12 and he does only cross country/enduro events, rekons will never go back to alpinestar. every bit as waterproof as the tech10 and the best sealing boot around the top of your leg that ive ever worn hands down

I have the same issue with Gaerne's. Stuck between sizes. I get the size that is slightly loose. Then I get a set of "athletic insoles" like Dr. Scholls gel or whatever you see at WalMArt, etc. I get ones that are a little thicker than the stockers. Makes the boots perfect. Thick socks can make a big difference too,

From previous threads on here it seems about 80% or so of the comments are negative about the Fox boots. I've never raced in them but they look well built and are made in Italy.

I also wear 12 in ASTARS. I have a buddy who has the Gaernes, I will have to get ahold of him and try them on.

Sweet, Thanks! I am leaning towards the Gaernes.
