1972 was the first year I started racing. I still ride at the track for fun a couple times a month and yes the tracks are so nicely preppped and the bikes are so good now, but I remember the riding and racing being so much fun back then. It sucks getting old......This is the earliest picture I have digital from that time. It was 1973. I thought I was Joel Robert. ha ha

Great video.

Interesting how they had old tires covering all of the track side fence stakes........forty years ago but they had it together track safety wise.

mumbles-Cool shot.....were you on the Widowmaker AKA TM400?

Rock,

No it was a 73 TM 250. Had a lightning switch power band but I loved that bike. Just looking at that picture brings back a lot of great memories.

I was in North Carolina at the time and there wasn't a lot of people around there racing so if you had a 250 you all raced together no matter what your skill level. It was was such a good time though. I remember it would cost me $3.50 to enter and gas was 49 cent a gallon. If I got at least a third I made ten bucks. I thought I was hot stuff.

Geoff,

I wanted to let you know that I really appreciate what you do for getting the European MX out here. Your web site is one I check out everyday.

I really enjoy all the old school MX stuff you put on your web site. Most MX web sites don't care about the history of the sport so thank you.

I was wondering if you have ever had a chance to talk to the Great Brit Dave Bickers? I don't think he gets enough respect. He dominated the racing in the 1960 - 65 era. He could have been world champion in 1962-63 if he would have done the complete championship. Any way could you get a interview with him?

I restored a 1961 Greeves MCS which he developed and won the European 250 Championship in 60 and 61 before it became the World Championship. When ordering some parts I found a person that actually knew Dave. I asked if it would be possible to get him to sign a number plate for me and they said no problem. So I have my restored Greeves with his signature on the front number plate. When they sent the number plate back to me they also, to my surprise put in an actual ingraved plate from 1959 with Dave Bickers name and first palce off one of his old trophys. A dream come true.
