The odd part about it is the factory's real priority is to sell motorcycles. Increasing the fan base will ADD to the number of people that want to ride dirtbikes (and streetbikes).
As long as this thread is going, I'll just throw out that the TV coverage could use an injection of enthusiasm. I saw James Stewart sew up the championship on SPEED and they mustered all the excitement of a bored waitress reciting the specials at Waffle House. (keep Emig though!). Ralph you seem like a cool dude but show some enthusiasm or hand the mic...
Pit Row
Use of haybales to allow for creation of more lines in turns during practices.
Technical stuff; long off cambers, very steep up/down hills, switchbacks....
Start to actual track transition make safer.
Many thoughts.
1) Adopt FIM course specs for MX jump size and spacing. We just adopted their sound levels which were an excellent idea so let's take a lead from the people who started the sport of MX to improve safety.
2) Introduce caution lights at National track similar to the ones used in SX to let the riders know they're approaching a situation. Since they're held during the day use white strobe lights like on runways.
3) Hold Nationals on Saturday to provide the best racing surface to the pro riders.
4) Day Nationals only. If the conditions are too hot for the riders they should go race the GPs instead of competing on the world's toughest tracks under the harshest conditions.
5) Reduce the number of SX type obstacles on National tracks to keep them from becoming outdoor SX tracks
6) MX-Lower the speeds on sections directly after the first turn to reduce the chances of another Alessi Red Bud type incident.
SX-Have whoop or sand sections follow first turns instead of big double and triples.
7) Use 2009 as the year to have SX tracks like the one we had at A2 this year. We need more technical sections (off camber, sand sections, flat turns instead of bowl turns) rather than having the course be 99.9 percent whoops and jumps. Use up entire stadium floor.
8) Bring back the over/under Tunnels and run the course into the stands where possible. Lap times need to be close to one minute OR give us 20 minute 450 mains and 15 minute 250F mains PLEASE
9) Incorporate significantly more rider input into track design. This rider input should be accepted before, during, and after practice as well as throughout the course of the day. Make the tracks wider and longer whenever possible.
10) Appoint a full-time SAFETY person (ideally a former racer) to document crashes in a database and list injury severity. Investigate alternatives to hay bales (air fencing. TUFF blocks?) to reduce injuries. SAFETY person would also be the point of contact to receive rider input for track design and would relay comments to track owner/Dirt Works.
After the work I've done on the Suggestions for Improving Flagging and Suggestions for Improving Course Design threads I need a break plus need to focus on work objectives for the remainder of the week.
Thanks for your help and nice getting to know who the Vital MX members are who care about making things better.
