You're always tough to beat.

The planets basically need to align for any other team to win the MXdN - as they did last year at Lommel. Few other teams can field a team strong enough to contend for the overall in the first place, and when they do they can't afford any bad luck.

Lommel was probably the first MXdN for years that one of the other favoured teams managed to come through the Sunday unscathed while Team USA encountered a bit of bad luck for a change.

Herlings will probably never win an MXdN
Cairoli will probably never win an MXdN
Roczen probably won't win an MXdN again (Germanys team for 2013 is Ken Roczen, Max Nagl and Dennis Ullrich... who is currently lying 21st in MX1 and the US equivalent of Les Smith)
Paulin & Musquin could win if Frossard eventually manages to stay injury free for once and regains his 2011 form.
Desalle could win if the MXdN was held on sand again and all three bikes make it to the end of the moto's unlike last year.

With the 2 Ryans in the team USA could have the pick of a huge chunk of the whole AMA series for their 3rd rider and still go down as favourites

It's interesting that Tomac is in pretty much the same position as Baggett was the last 2 years,super fast and odds on to be picked,I can't see his results going the same was though,many people were wrong about the last 2 years being an easy victory but I don't think they'll be pushed too hard this year

France's team is nowhere near its strongest,Musquin has had 2 (or 3) very poor MXdN performances but things havn't been ideal from the time he went to the US really,he's much more like his old form now and deserving of a spot,where I'm sure he'd have a much better event

Belgium will probably be the next strongest team,maybe Van Horebeek will ride the 250 and Desalle/Ken on 450s

It's probably about the race for 2nd and 3rd place amongst all the other Moto countries

Well they could have been beaten in 2008 had Boissierre not got a flat tyre, they could have been beaten in 2009 when both the 1st and 2nd race winners + Chad Reed all crashed out within the first three corners of the last race and they might have been beaten in 2011 had Pourcels mousse not come off the rim.

Team USA can be beaten, but the cards have to fall in favour of the other teams and not against them as they have done all too often in recent years.

Not even trying to spark that conversation, but with how well Ryan, Ryan and Eli are riding, I think that team USA would still win against a Rest Of World team. Cairoli, Herlings, Roczen, or some combo like that would have a great shot at winning, but I can't see (outside of weird luck) anyone beating that team USA, not with the way they're riding now.

It won't be the first time that a stellar team is assembled with little to no chance of victory for anyone else.

If they switched from Washougal to somewhere more "accessible" (I use Shougal as the example as that's what I'm close to) I'd go the first time, but despite being more accessible, if it wasn't as awesome as the natural terrain of the Washougal hills, I'd quit going for sure. The only bad thing about the Des Nations is the luck side of it. Also, some riders do amazingly well at the Des Nations. Look at Roczen. I am not a big fan of his but his Des Nations rides have been spectacular, EVERY year. Every year he comes out and seems to find an 8th gear and runs with and beats the best in the world while he is on a 250. If Tomac can keep his pace up, I feel that he could beat EVERYONE, but this will be the first time he has raced the event and in the past, he has had less than stellar races for no apparent reason. Also, if one guy can have the craziest bad luck, it is Dungey. I can't count on my hands the number of times that he has had the craziest/dumbest things happen to him that he has no control over. To name a few, gas running out, bike not starting, battery not working, chain derailing, leatt breaking and the list goes on and on. I like Dungey A LOT more than Villopoto but for as fast and consistent as Dungey is, somethine crazy happens a lot. I'd say Villopoto is our only REAL ace in the hole. No matter where he starts, he is coming to the front with a pace that rarely can be matched and he never seems to have the crazy incidences that Dungey has.

With all of that being said, I hope Team USA goes out and beats the ever living brakes off of the other teams AND the world. Show them that last year was a fluke and won't be repeated.... Until they rig another race at a bottomless pit of sand Wink
