Not sure how many people have them but some say the factory boys dont like the bike. I think it looks friggin awesome and if I were in the market for a new 450 it'd be a toss up between the CRF and the RMZ. With recent RUMORS that Eli Tomac is going to RCH Suzuki, it's an interesting discussion. Or could be.

Does it suck bad enough to the point where retail owners say it blows chunks like the YZ450? Or is it just picky factory riders?

I absolutely love mine, best bike I have ever ridden, nimble as a 2T, little lo on power but I got that fixed Silly
Got a KTM 450 to, fast but like riding a bus compared to the CRF.

The same thing happened in '09-'10. The pro's initially didn't like the '09, but by '10 the bike was dialed and widely regarded as the best factory bike on the track.

I like mine. I find it to be the easiest 450 to ride. Power is smooth. Bike is small. If you like an engine with big hit and what "feels" to be loads of power. You wont like this engine. The opposite is the kawi engine. I hated that engine because it's so wild. I put the muddy / lame power chip in and was faster because it was less like riding a hand grenade.

Air forks took longer than spring forks to dial in but that's because I had no starting point. The air forks are too soft initially in the valving so they ride too low in the stroke. People try to solve this with additional air pressure but that makes the front end very harsh. Some shim changes are a quick fix to this front end for outdoors. SX is a different animal.

Rear will seem really ass high when you first ride this bike as well. Partially due to the front riding low in the stroke. I've found 108mm - 110mm of sag is right for me.

Hope that helps.

I have 2013 Honda CRF 450 and I like it a lot. I have less than two hours on it but I even raced it last weekend even though I haven't had any time to adjust suspension or anything. Bike feels really light and easy to ride. I have had chance to test also brand new YZF450 and KTM 450 and they both had good power, but felt really heavy compared to Honda. Also YZF was wide as hell and the intake noise really bothered me. Only way to know which bike fits you best is to test it yourself.

Loving mine, gets better with every race. Surprised it's getting such a bad rap. Noticed a lot of them at my last race, and some top local pro riders doing very well on them.

EXP/Core. 1- MX race on it and can't express how good it works. I have been using Rekluse Z-Start with perch adjuster on previous 06 and 08 CRF450's and am a true Rekluse fan for life.

Probably just another witch hunt. I'll bet Yamaha will be glad to have the heat off of them and on to someone else.

So what I'm hearing is different people like different bikes and the CRF450 is no different?

But, if professional racers drive sales to a degree, you may want to take their advice over some engineer or number cruncher that doesn't even ride. There aren't many Yamahas at all in the 450 classes. And none of them are really competitive. And it all seemed to go downhill after the new design.

Best advice right there. I have an 11 YZ450f and just love the stock suspension, but could not turn it at all. Tried a friends 13 CRF450 and felt more comfortable on it after 2 laps than my YZ. It just fit me better. I ended up getting a 13 CRF250 because i have no need for the power of a 450.

Second that. When the 09 came out, I feel it had serious issues, there was way to much smoke on the boards, and when people were still running their 08 in SX mid season, even late season it became pretty evident for me. When a bike is better, people find solutions to be on that ride, when the bike isn't that better, or worse one finds solution to stick to previous scooter.

Based on the smoke so far, I don't see a huge fire at all. I haven't even heard why this bike would be faulty to start with? Low on power? For who? Aftermarket exhaust fix that. The air forks? I remember Tomac and Barcia killing it with those at the MEC, despite the bike had barely hit the market. So it worked than, but now it doesn't work?

I'm sure it's a good enough bike for us all.

Reed is obviously struggling with the bike, Tomac went from kicking ass and doing the same lap times on the 250 as the 450 guys, to struggling on the 450, rumors are he did not like the bike. Barcia and Canard are doing exceptionally well but honestly I expected better from at least Barcia. Could it be difficulty with the bike?

I don't think the bike is bad, I'd bet it's similar to '09 where it just takes a year to really dial it in. But IMO it seems like the factory honda is definitely not all that great. You don't hear any of those above Honda guys raving about how good their bike is, which factory honda guys were doing last year. They could not shut up about how amazing the bike was. Now? Nobody says anything.

I've had mine since December and have got quite a lot of hours on it. Was coming off a '09 450 Kawasaki. I like the Honda but have made many mods to make it more comfortable for me, as a somewhat taller/heavier rider (6'2", 210#). In stock trim, the suspension just didn't reward aggressive behavior due to a lack of significant compression damping. A revalve (front &rear) has helped, but I may go even more aggressive with the rear tune next time I change the fluids.

I had to change both the shift and rear brake lever to accommodate my size 12 boots. They were far too short stock.

Went with higher rise bars and would love to get my hands on some tall seat foam.

The clutch lever had a funny actuation point (to me, at least) where the clutch would engage just too close to the bar for my liking. A switch to a works connection perch and lever helped a bit.

Front brake is absolute shit IMO. An oversized rotor helped, but it's still not as good as the Kawasaki w/ oversized rotor.

As mentioned above, the power delivery between the two bikes could not be more different. As a VetB level rider, I basically am looking for a setup where I can ride the whole track in 3rd gear 'cause I'm lazy, but the power stock delivery doesn't allow for this as the bike just doesn't make much power higher in the rpm range. It really signs off too early, IMO. A Yosh pipe definitely helped, but I am looking to change the mapping.

Also broke a rear fender in a very slow speed, low-side crash that never should have resulted in any problem IMO.

On the positive side, I really like the chassis on this bike and love the way it jumps and turns. It does feel light and maneuverable. As a result, I felt like I cornered better on this bike right away, in every type of turn.

Hope this helps.

Don't agree. Barcia is constantly telling how good the bike is, and Reed would be struggling on any bike, if feel the guy is done when talking about a title contender, it's not hard to picture him being appealed to blame the bike at this point. If he will turn things around on another brand, I will apology, but who really believes he's getting beat by RV because of the bike?

If RV was on one, we wouldn't have this discussion.

I've got the Core EXP as well...and I can not tell you how much I LOVE this thing. I'm an off road guy, and they are very popular at my races, so I'm always pleasantly surprised when I see MX guys running them. Great product! I'm a fan for life as well.

This is because riding a 450 is not the same as riding a 250. People will always post similar lap times as the 450 guys on the 250's, but when they move up only be a top 10 guy.

The idea that if you ride a 250f fast that you'll be even faster or just as fast on a 450 is funny to me.

PS; I don't think Reed has ever liked any of his bikes when he himself is struggling.

one thing i still don't understand is why they went with TWO farters instead of one. i thought the 250 that had dual shit-pipes was disregarded as a mistake. all it comes to is more money out of the consumers pocket when it comes time for a double 4stro-colon replacement.

more money equals less coin for the GLTB

Some of the Honda guys, the younger ones, love it while the older guys had trouble adjusting. And I like Chad, but he has had trouble with adapting to bikes before like the Kawi. This is NOT a knock on Chad, I've ridden bikes the most people loved and I just didnt feel comfortable on, it happens.

As for the Yamaha, there is nothing wrong with it for most of us idiots, its the top pros who have trouble with it because they are able to push it to the point its quirks come out, where I would bet 99.9% of us on Vital cant push it that far.

Eh, ive heard even local yocals saying the YZ does weird stuff too..but hey, that could just be them saying well the pros dont like it so i dont either!!

It seems like the YZ's are better for bigger/taller guys while shorter folks get on with the CRF/RMZ
5/2/2013 2:24pm
Maybe a local pro can push it that far, I know I damn sure cant. But, as you said, I am a small guy so I didnt like the YZ just because of the size, not because it did anything weird while I was riding it. My favorite bikes are the steel frame YZs, they always got knocked in shoot outs for being "cramped" but I'm 5'7" so they were perfect for me, and I still have a '99 YZ125 for that reason.

Everyone I've talked to that owns one loves it. The trick is figuring out those air forks and you're set.

Weston Peick is a monster and he fits his RM-Z really well if you ask me.
