Ok...I hate to even say this, because I'm not a Villopoto fan (as some here know). But...doesn't it seem like he pretty much backed off and let Ryan Dungey have the win in Minnesota? Seriously, after those few corners of them banging bars & making contact...I swear it looked like RV stood up & checked up going into the last corner that Dungey passed him ultimately for the win.

I've watched the incident three times, and as much as I hate to admit it...I think Villopoto let Dungey go by him with no effort against him for the lead...and the win.

Hope I'm wrong. Sad
When was the last time you were leading a race and let someone by? Thats what I thought. Its not in any real racers DNA to let someone by when leading. It's certainly not in RV's.

At first I agreed with Cigaro, but then I watched the race. I don't think RV let Dungey by as much as he gave in a little and let him go. It's kind of like Millsaps letting RV go.

exactly , i just watched it and he definately slowed up for a second. maybe figured better to get second then crash because dungey looked alot smoother and you could tell Rv was trying to figure out which way Rd was going. awesome race to watch for sure. thats about as hard and clean and agressive as you can get
i thought it was pretty cool that after RD went by RV, RV latched onto him and followed his lines through some of the sections that RD was clearly faster.

awesome race between those two guys

I agree. Remember in 2007 when RV was battling Townley? There was one race where RV pulled over and let Townley take the lead so RV could follow him and see the lines he was taking. It was one of the rounds back east.

RV is what the U.S. military calls, "technically and tactically proficient."

The best thing that could happen to RD would be for RV to throw it away racing for the lead in front of his hometown crowd. Smart racing by both guys.

2007, RV & BT101 - team mates battling epically for wins and championship points. Great intense, hard, clean racing that rivals any series I've ever witnessed. I just wish Ben had stayed healthy, we would have even more insanity out there now.

RV actually wasn't on fire all day. Dungey, Stewart, Reed and even Canard seemed to get into the grove quicker than he did (all when it didn't count of course). He did not bring that crazy intensity of his out until he ripped that start in the main.

Even then he had poorer lines than Dungey, going into the first rhythm section, before the end zone triple, and in the whoops. RV pushed and pushed but Dungey did not crack - the energy of the crowd was insane and hd to give him a boost. After Dungey passed him for the final time I think he knew it was over.

One of the best races I've ever seen, and a pleasure to watch in person.
I couldn't agree more with everything you said. This may have been the best race from a fan standpoint that I've ever seen. The crowd was something to experience. Insanely loud.

Vegas 2009 and 2011 the leaders both let riders by because they didn't need to win. I'm sure it has happened other times,
but those two come to mind.

Funny how the guy stood up, and locked his knees and looked over at Dungey going by. As if he wanted to make absolutely sure everyone saw that he was letting him go by. He knows Dungey would have passed him anyway. He closed about 7-8 seconds in a matter of 8-10 laps.

Dungey was faster that night, and Villopoto's ridiculously out of proportion self-ego made him give an Oscar-worthy performance going in to that corner.

You guys want to bag on Stewart not racing if he knows he won't win? Look at fucking Villopoto last night.

So when RV leads 3/4 of the race and finally someone tracks him down and passes him the excuse is he let him by? An basically rolled over afterward? You're kidding right? Right?

Why is it that it couldn't possibly just be that someone was faster than him that night? Or is that blasphemy? Not the two time champ, couldn't ever happen.

I have plenty of respect for RV1 but some of you guys are ridiculous about it. I'm a huge Dungey fan and I can accept the fact that when RV1 grabs the win that he was just the better rider that night, more often than not over the past 2 years actually. He's not the 2 time defending champ, and probably soon to be 3 time champ for no reason.

I see the whole looking at the bigger picture idea, I really do and I'm sure he's more focused on the title but if that means that he rode tighter in order to not make a mistake and thus allowing for Dungey to be faster then so be it.

The best rider that night won, and for 5 races before that the best rider that night won those too.

Yes, and some people do it in dramatic, Steven Spielberg-fashion by standing up, pulling over, and watching the guy go by.

actually ive argued this back when it happened. in 2009 vegas stewart was going for it in the begining, its when he cased a rythm section going for a quad trying to pull away from villopoto is when he backed off

Didn't really watch the race did you. The biggest gap in the whole race was 2.5 seconds in about lap 7 or 8. Yes, look at Villopoto
last night, he increased his points lead while losing by less than a second to his biggest rival. It doesn't matter if he let him by or
he didn't, both Ryans accomplished their goal last night. That was a great race to watch.

it's not the first time he's done this either, he did the same thing to BT101 @ Millville in 07 during the first 250 moto

I don't mean to split hairs and make mountains out of mole hills, but I went to some human intel classes in the not too distant past. they covered speech analysis, and micro expressions, things like that.

so i am watching Villopoto's interview at one of the last few rounds (maybe indy?) and he says "mistakes were made". Now, 99.9% of riders on the gate, when asked, would say "i made a few mistakes", to include dungey, whom they interviewed right after villopoto.

The guy truly believes he is the best guy out there to the point that if he makes a mistake, it's clearly not his fault. maybe this is a mental advantage that he has over the field. maybe it's a good thing. but the guy is clearly a headcase, given the things he says, and the shit he pulls with flags, the shit he pulls with race officials, and "letting" people by. ect.

go ahead fruitboys and flame away, you were probably confused at the word "intel".

So everybody knows that they 2 had different goals for last Sat. RV-finish strong and ahead of DM, RD-win. While you could argue that RV didn't ride with the same intensity and commitment to win, and because of that he didn't win, then it would follow that RD hasn't ridden with the same intensity and commitment to win up until now and he let RV win all year. All in all, it was a good race to watch. I don't think RV let RD win, but I do believe RV knew that the level he needed to ride to beat RD, on that night, was not worth riding on the edge and still possibly losing the race and even the championship.

I took a class recently as well. I learned anyone that pontificates on a motocross discussion board, in excess of 600 times in a month, is a complete tool.
