Dude is amazing.
I will say that swimming is one of the best sports you can use to crosstrain for moto....it's just so technical that the average person that didn't grow up doing it, has a very difficult time picking it up later in life.

1. the amount of O2 the lungs can take in and utilize.
2. the use of that O2 by the working muscles.
In 99 Pingree had been injured and used swimming for low impact training, at the same time I was working with Brandes utilizing MX training on and off the bike.
Brandes goes with Ping for a swimming workout and immediately calls me to say that he was out of shape. Ping could do 30 laps and Brandes could only do 5 before becoming fatigued. I explained it was not the same, the muscles used for MX/SX are different than swimming. First SX Brandes does well and is not fatigued, Ping did ok but was exhausted after the main.
Info: if you are injured and can swim for exercise and cardio it will be of benefit but will not utilize the muscles in the same way as MX/SX.

My body can't take the pounding of mx or weights as much anymore at age 40 so I picked up swimming last winter. Yes, not doing it as a kid makes it hard to pick up as adult. I stuck with it and can now swim decent, but will never be real fast. I train at same time as local high schools and those 16 - 18 yr old kids humble my ass every single day. fuggers can go forever.
The hardest part for me was feeling comfortable in my new speedo.
I use to race mountain bikes, road bikes, running races and triathlons. But, nothing gets my heart rate up faster than racing MX. The guys I use to race bicycles with have a hard time believing MX can be so demanding but the heart rate monitor shows the effort.
Funny thing to me running is a higher heart rate for me but cycling is way more fatigue on the legs. I guess it really is apples and oranges.
Either way Phelps is a machine. Glad he's on the home team.
