Best way to the Hangtown National?

Edited Date/Time 4/3/2013 2:52pm
Maybe a little early to ask but what is the easiest way to get to Hangtown?

Its time for another vacation to the US and we are going to see the supercross finale in Vegas and the first round of the nationals at Hangtown.
We were in Vegas last year and it was a dream come true for me to see sx finale in the us and this year we wanted more.

We are going on a roadtrip from Las Vegas to L-A to San Fransisco and will be in San Fransisco by the time of the Hangtown round.

Is it easier to take a plane from San Fransisco to Sacramento or rent a car or any other option like bus or train?
Is it easy to go to the track? Do we have to buy tickets before we go there?

I tried google but didnt find anything good so whats better than asking for advice here Smile

By car, it's an hour an a half/two hour drive. It would take longer by plane and then you're still 30-40 minutes from the track. There is no public transportation that will get you even close to the track. You can get tickets at the track.

Allright, it will be by car then!

Thanks a lot Randy! Smile

You probably want to stay in Sac the nite of the race & you can get a really good deal on the nearby hotels if you book now. I'd take a stab at driving up the coast & back down via the Sierras...

Sounds like an awesome vacay! Have a Great Trip!

Plan to stay out at Folsom at one of the hotels around East Bidwell/Scott Road and Highway 50. It's about ten minutes from the track. Couldn't be easier and there's plenty to do in old Folsom or next door at the Palladio mall.

Bring sunscreen.

And if you want to catch some Speedway, if you get in early enough Friday, "Fast Fridays" will be on it's second session up in Auburn at the fairgrounds about 1/2 hour away.

Staying in Folsum is great- Much better than East Sac/ Rancho Cordova area. Cool area fun nightlife and very close to the track.

Stay away from Rancho Cambodia or Syphilis Heights ... heh heh heh ...

Hangtown is out in the middle of what used to be rocket engine testing grounds, so there is nothing there at all unless you drive back to hwy50, so be prepared to drive back into town which will take a good 20-35min depending on your accommodations. Which means don't go and get yourself jacked up at the track.

If you ski (snow) Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows and Heavenly should still have late spring skiing if your up to some morning ice and afternoon slush. Regardless hit up Tahoe for a beautiful day or two... panty dropper 1 !!!

If you go to SF go to the north end of the Golden Gate on the northbound side there is a parking area and you can walk back across and hit up the visitor center (very cool walk on a clear day). Then you can drive under the bridge under the north end and go out onto the highlands and watch a sunset ... panty dropper 2 !!!

Good luck and safe travels.

Just read some of your itinerary, look into a one-way car rental from Vegas and fly home out of either SFO or Reno(might add a connecting flight but if your in Tahoe it's only 50min to the Reno airport vs back to SFO is a 2.5hr drive)

Couple tips that i wish someone would've given me on my first trip to Hangtown. Bring some lawn chairs if you plan on getting general admission tickets. There are no seats or grand stands bleachers for the general admission so make sure you take some chairs or else your legs and back will hate you by the end of the day. Also make sure to take a cooler with plenty of refreshments and water because it is very hot and dry. Paying $5 for a bottle of water at a national will add up. Also make sure to move around and get different views of the track. Since it is inclined it is good for viewing . Hope you have fun! Tickets are $40 each at the door.

Beat me to it. My answer was going to be "Fly in by helicopter, parachute into Yosemite, and hike to the track."

I'll be spending some time in Cali soon, a night in Sequoia natl park, then 3 nights on the valley floor in Yosemite.

Always awesome to pop into Yosemite that time of year, but allow plenty of time to get into and through the Valley. Traffic should not be too bad before the Hangtown weekend, but will start to tilt after, and the speed limit is lower once you're in the park.

Sacto airport is also a good return option for connecting flights if you're leaving after the race; easy in and out.

Park on the back side of the track if you can, which should be where Scott Road takes you if you're out in Folsom where I suggested, it's easier to get out quickly that way IMO.

By the way, they are having unlimited hydroplanes at Folsom Lake a week or so after Hangtown, about five minutes from my house. Not cheap, but anyone who's seen them got opinions on whether it's worth it? It sounds like it's going to be a bit of a cluster getting in and out, but thinking it might be worth shooting.

Send a Pm to motokid40; he's in the Dirt Diggers club who run the Hangtown race. He might have some special insights that could benefit you when you get to the track...

for sure drive, its pretty easy i can make it from San Francisco back home to Reno Nevada (by Lake Tahoe) in a few hours and you have to drive through Sacramento. I will probably see you there, I have never made it to an outdoor national and I missed hangtown last year due to military training... so far my calendar is open and i wll make the drive with a few friends!
