Stumbled across this clip from Koenigsegg (naughty swedish sportscars)

"In the seventh episode, Christian Von Koenigsegg and Urban Carlson demonstrate their Free Valve technology that does not require a camshaft to run. This engineering is being pioneered by Koenigsegg for future use, but is already running in a Saab 9-5 test mule."

Pretty awesome if you ask me... What do you think? Useful for future MX machines? I sure think so!

Pneumatic valvetrains.

MotoGP has been running them for 10 years. All the major OEMs are well aware of the technology, and I have been saying for awhile that the first OEM that puts this on their 250/450 is going to sell a LOT of bikes.

Its the valve actuation profile that makes all the difference. Instead of a bell curve, they can run that flat profile at full vavle opening, for longer duration that will make LARGE differences in the engines ability to flow the fuel air mixture, resulting of course in sizable horsepower gains.

This is VERY interesting, and it WILL result in some advances in the Internal combusion engines for sure. I wonder if that is a publicly traded company.

Oh, they are also doing the exact same thing with electromagnetic actuators that, in my mind, will be the way of the future.

Really cool , the engine can always be in the powerband because of the constantly changing valve timing ,lift and duration.

Good luck fitting that system on a dirtbike. You'd need an airpump, lines, another ECM to run the whole thing, etc.

Also I believe it is cost prohibitive at this point, even for cars.

I've recently wondered why that tech isn't being used. I know that sealing would be the main obstacle, but surely someone would come up with a solution. Looks like they have from that vid

They can't keep air in the shocks, how can they do it in the valvetrain at 10,000 rpm?

BTW didn't GM bail on Saab a few years ago?

I could see rotary valves happening before pneumatic ones. With the tight tolerances they can machine to these days, and the high tech coatings, I can't see why it hasn't been done yet. It would have to make a big difference on a single cylinder engine

that we're still using a system that wastes a huge % to heat and has a piston that goes up, slow down, STOPS, reverse direction and get pushed down to make forward motion is archaic, but the petro chem companies love it!

Little PT6 turnbine engine in Cessna Caravan and many other tuboprop planes makes 675 hp easily. No very responsive the way we like to think of engines because of spool up time, but just keep it at a high setting and control the power delivery more through clutch and a tiny turbine would be bad ass!

Someone I know was invested in a company that had the same type of idea. They had a prototype running on an xr I believe but there were several issues and as far as I know they stopped. This is a good reminder to find out what's going on with it though.
