Anybody else watch the arenacross this weekend and catch the interview where Tyler announced he was staying with Babbitt's for two more years? In the interview he said he wanted to stay in arenacross for two more years so that he can get his college degree, then do some supercross afterwards.

I don't know that much about Tyler, but I was impressed to hear him say that. He has to be making decent money with Babbitt's and could eventually make decent money in SX. Most guys wouldn't even give college a second thought in situation (including myself). Hats off to him for thinking about his future...

I caught the part about him staying with Babbitt's for 2 years, but not the part about the college degree. Good for him!
I've always got the impression that arenacross racers don't really make much, except for their bonus/win money. With 2 titles under his belt, I'm sure he's got a pretty good nest egg, but not enough to retire just yet.
Anyways, hats off to him for going the college route.

Does anyone have the video of Tyler when he was 15 or 16 years old and got DQ'ed at a BooKoo arenacross for punting someone? I think it was Chad Johnson (maybe)?

That's really cool to hear, along with being a challenging task in the midst of a racing career. I bet it's a nice balance though having something to do to take the mind off racing. I just hope he has blended or online courses depending on when he has to fly to the races lol.

This is the way to do it. He is going to have such a huge network from his racing career he'll be able to find a kick ass job doing whatever he wants and he'll have the education to make him more valuable.

I posted a topic on this subject a while back...glad to see it's really being done by a "top rider" in his given series. Way to set an example IMO.

Tyler is an awesome guy. Talked to him in the parking lot at Walmart in Danville,KY close to where both of us live this past summer for about 30 minutes. He had red pick up truck with his Kawi practice bike in the back of it. Seems like a well grounded guy. He gave his phone number and told me to come ride with him anytime I wanted too.

I'm studying to sit for the GMAT, already been down the bachelor road, thought about getting another bachelors but would need 8 classes for an additional degree and 4 more for to get a masters. Have to congratulate him on having a plan to go down that road, just as long as he doesn't go into some liberal arts BS. I see kids now graduating from high school that don't know what they want to do, I always say get your basics out of the way and you will figure out what you want.

Hey Racer! I live 10 minutes from Danville and have ridden at his practice track a few times. It gets really rutted and he wants it even more so. Haha.

Well congrats to him!! Better then ending up with an IQ of a friggin turnip (Hanny, Jlaw just to name a couple) like so many do. Education comes first, my son doesn't like it, but without decent grades he doesn't race. So many parents let their kids education fall apart just for the sake of chasing the dream. So when an established rider decides to further his education while continuing to race at a top level, that's pretty awesome and worthy of some praise.

It's cool to be a "badass" as some call those guys I guess, but not cool to have a thread about someone facing the reality that racing is not forever and having a plan for the future. I mean it seems like some guys on here would blow Lawrence if he asked them to.

I agree with you on the liberal arts bs, completely pointless. Some people just don't understand the importance of developing marketable skills. I took the GMAT a couple of years ago, didn't care for it much or grad school. I got a sweet raise when I was done though.

Hopefully if he's this serious about it, he's not wasting his time on some BS bachelor degree. I'm online right now completing mine and it's no easy feat for me but that's called life I guess.

I remember racing Anaheim and then sitting in class the next Monday during my last semester of getting my bachelors. Nobody had any idea until I showed up with a broken foot 2 weeks later from A2. Glad I stuck with school though, especially in this economy.

A man with a plan. It's a big deal because a young athlete with a plan is pretty rare. Awesome.

I wish my son gave a shit about school.

I think it's great for him. I also have quite a few friends with good degrees from credited schools sitting on their asses collecting a check from the government and buried in school loans. Those with the drive will make it regardless. I have lost a lot of faith in America's education system and burying kids in debt for a degree that they chose to pursue when they were 16-18 and had no idea what they want to do in the world!

Good on him. It is good to see a successful rider taking education seriously.

That's awesome! I ride my triathlon bike through Perryville all the time. Then circle back around in to Danville via Harrisburg.
