Just saw this on Facebook regarding the crash... neck brace or not, the 6D definitely appears to have come through:

6D Helmets

Great news that Eli's helmet did its job last night in Oakland and he had no issues from the impact to his head. The team reported that they were very happy with the performance of the helmet and that it just saved their season! Eli commented that he was "very impressed with the impact absorption" of his 6D!

Watch it real close..now ask yourself..if his neck was braced would he have flipped like that or had all that energy driven down into his skull? I think the latter.

Think about it

Okay, that's a Huffington post article that says he died of a head injury. I don't see a word in there about a neck brace.

I asked for data.

I think your simply looking for an argument and don't care if your wrong. I'm not participating unless you can post some data of your own.
Independent data? It's posted on their website!!! Do you really think they'd post data that says their product is no good or adds very little value in terms of protection?

You can't be serious, can you?

Cycle News did an article a few years ago that led me to buy an A-stars brace. They went so far as to test them on cadavers, so to say that there has been no research done is simply not true.

I'm sure alot of additional research has been done since this article was written. Wear one, don't wear one, whatever, but at least make an educated choice.

Is Tomac okay? Looked like he hurt his leg or something? Hate to see that, he seems like a nice guy.

Me thinks cushioning your head also helps cushion your spine when doing a lawn dart impression. Your head bone's connected to the neck bone...

I'd like to see more integrated safety gear, just like (some) neck braces are designed to work with (some) chest protectors. I think that is truly the key to the "next step" in rider protection. A "safety protection system" of sorts. There's a few "gaps" in today's safety equipment.

I know of a few ideas floating around, so maybe we'll see some new products in the future that fully integrate with other safety components to help reduce the overall risk of injury.

i didnt see the crash but Eli Tomac is a world class athelete and when you're at that level, your body can take hits that most mortals cannot.
Idiotic statement of the day. Congrats.

It dosnt matter if there is data or not, its just a piece of mind that matters. I have broke my neck before(C-2) and after coming back form the injury, i started to wear the Leatt. So when I ride now, i know I am wearing somehting that someone produce to lower the risk of neck injuries.

I stopped wearing a neck brace this past year because I realized I have yet to see ANY hard data by any of these companies or magazines supporting their claims.

Who's to say Canard's crash last year would have been better or worse had he not been wearing a Leatt? Of course Trey and Leatt are going to point out the brace as having been a savior to Trey but again there is no data supporting this idea. It's not like a Hans device in car racing where you can show very strong data to support the usage.

I feel more comfortable not wearing one, especially now that I have put all the BS "what if" thoughts out of my mind.
You really can't be serious.

this was the point of my post....does the neck brace really lower the risk of neck injury? In Eli's case, I believe he was better off not wearing a neck brace for this particular crash. I think a neck brace might have limited his range of movement just enough to prevent his "tuck and roll" and could have resulted in a broken neck. It's all about the angle of impact I guess...

The leatt brace limits the range of motion in your neck. How would this not HELP to prevent you from breaking your neck? This is a dangerous sport, people will always find ways to hurt themselves bad but if it prevents your neck from snapping its worth the investment.

Do you really think he had any amount of control over what his body was doing when he was crashing? I watched it again and he didn't tuck at all because he was moving fast enough that he had no control over his body. If you pile drive into a whoop head first a leatt brace is going to give you a better chance of preventing your neck from bending enough to break.

No he didn't have control...I'm sorry you don't get the concept that a brace could have limited the full flexion of his neck (tuck/roll) which would have transferred more force to his neck directly from the top of his head, versus his neck bending to max flexion allowing his body to roll over the top. If you don't understand it's not worth trying to explain it. Maybe one of these photoshop wizards can draw up a sketch for you to illustrate this.

Hey Steve....if you get a chance this week , is there any way that you could possibly talk to Eli or his team? In all seriousness.....the way Eli hit his head was really bad. Wasn't a slap of sorts....but a full on lawn dart type digger......it was not an easy thing to watch. My first thoughts were " Christ I hope his neck and spine are ok". I wish Eli the best....and hopefully we get to see him next week.

If there was enough force to do what you're describing then without a neck brace he would be worse off. The purpose of the brace is to prevent your neck from hyper extending. That is what it does. If his neck would of hyper extended the brace would limit the range of motion and likely prevented an injury. I'm sure there are diagrams that can draw this out for you.

Umm, and compression. That is (also) what it is designed to do.
1/27/2013 8:56pm
Here's a picture of the spine. If it gets forced too far forward or back it breaks and so does your spinal chord. Anything that prevents your chin from being forced down into your rib cage is potentially life saving. I'm not saving it will save your life but it could in the right situation and wouldn't you rather increase your chance of survival. I feel like I'm arguing with a child on why they should wear their seat belt.

You guys are silly. Nobody said every time you land on your head your neck will break, but to say a neck brace does more harm than good is silly. Bending is far worse than a straight compression stress (esp if the compression is limited as in the case of a neck brace) Why do you think it is easier to "bend" things back and forth to break them rather than just pull them apart? Try pulling a pencil apart, or pushing it til it breaks...now bend it and SNAP. Do they increase the amount of "shock" impact to the helmet due to not being able to "tuck," maybe but I don't buy it, but do they hurt the rider's neck more by keeping it straight? Probably not... I'm a mechanical engineer, not just blowing smoke outta my ass, tho yes I COULD be wrong, but I think I have more to back up my claim than you "neck braces have no proof" people.

While no crash is the same, often times when I go over the bars one or both of my legs smacks the bars enroute. I also sometimes hit terrafirma with my legs when I crash. If I had a season ending injury every time I rubbed a body part after crashing there's no way I would ride. Crashing a dirt bike hurts, doesn't mean anything.
