SX Live 2013: Ryan Villopoto On Family Support

It's so weird that RV has so much fight in him and he is so "meh" sometimes about the sport. I don't think it is a bad thing, it just the first time I can remember the baddest dude on a bike saying it like that.

What did you expect?

2 be continued was the most insight into his life and it didn't go nearly as deep as Troy Adamitis would have gone for The Moto, had RV been out there this summer.

From the look on his dads face and the look on his face the family seems to be pretty torn.

One could say the sport has given him so much,however, it looks as though he's sacrificed his family along the way.

Villopoto defiantly has a lot of talent, but just like he says it ain't as easy as it seems.

I couldn't imagine having a normal childhood if your being forced to ride for hours day after day, lap after lap

This pic of him young is pretty classic. Remember his rookie year? he didnt look much different!!! The pic from that rookie year stayed on the old live timing for like 3 years and i use to laugh every time i saw it.




btw Tanner, thx for posting the link to the vid page i created instead of embedding, helps a bit to keep the lights on around here. Cool

growing up at the track in the northwest I saw alot of it first hand. his dad was notorious for being over the top agressive and dead serious. you never really ever saw RV smile at the track. ever.

Couldnt be as bad as a certain guy (wont mention names) who went on to have a fairly successful career, but in the early mini days his father would whip him w/ a clutch cable if/when he didnt ride up to his raging "mini dads" expectations!!! Scary shit, and very sad.

Was this just a trailer/teaser for something longer or what? I love these kind of insights and personal videos.

So was this all or will they release something longer? I want to remember i saw something about a date for a release or something when i watched the race and they aired it.

I totally respect his attitude towards the sport....Its realistic and not always all fantacy and dreams. The shelf life for this sport is pretty short (unless you're Windham)
Hes treating it like it is....a job ...and entertainment for us spectators. In that video I feel like hes telling us that theirs way more to life than this. And hes right!
I see Ryan retiring from the sport early.

He seems to have a love, hate relationship with the sport and when it's time I don't think he will have any problem walking away.

I had the privelige to sit and talk to him at the parts unlimited meeting and I wouldn't be surprised to see him walk away after this Kawi deal is up. Casey Stoner style.

I agree with everything everyone is saying here. I meant no disrespect at all to the guy or his family. I was simply pointing out the biggest difference between Villopoto and say Carmichael, McGrath, Stewart, Hannah, Johnson, or Ward; those guys were on a track to do things and wanted to retain the title of the best forever.

Villopoto does want to be the best right now, but it is so surprising to see him not want or care for records. He doesn't have a desire to win 73 Sx races. He isn't shooting to win 8 Sx titles. He isn't trying to be the next legend in our sport and it seems like he doesn't have a desire to. That doesn't make him wrong. Again, I was just pointing out that seems to be a much different "mind set" (FML I just used a Fro-ism) than all the guys that came before him.

I am shocked by some parents: either the kid wants to do a career/ride as good as possible and ask the support (incl. coaching, which means to be tough), either the kid does not want it, so if money is a problem, just stop racing.

I feel bad for poto, there is nothing worst than riding at 110%, it is scary & usually ends up on the ground hard.

I respect his honesty.

He has a life and interests outside of MX..there is nothing wrong with that.

I agree that he appears to treat it like the job that it is. However, I am sure he would like to break some records given the opportunity.
