Ive seen bikes go for dirt cheap due to the fact ppl usually wait till its to late to sell it and they need money like it was yesterday

Prob missing a title (stolen). As a general rule on my local craigslist, if they don't mention the title in the ad, they usually don't have it. I love it when they say its lost but they will give you a bill of sale instead.

I payed 1700 for a mint 2011 KTM 250sx-f last week. 'Locked up' - With title. Completely disassembled it and found a semi frozen rod bearing. $200 in parts for a new rod. New 250F for $1900. These deals are out there!

I've bought bikes that didn't have a title, and wrote up a bill of sale with the VIN number. What I DID do however, is to take that VIN number by the nearest police department for a full check prior to handing over any cash. You'll find that your local officers are more than willing to help in this way.

You can check the VIN for free here. https://www.nicb.org/ It's updated often and you can run motorcycles, ATVs, cars, trucks, anything with a VIN. I like it because you can print out proof that says it isn't stolen if you ever decide to sell it. I've bought a few bikes without titles, because often they CAN be missplaced or lost, etc. Usually you can tell by the people selling it. If you meet them in a busy public place and they're constantly looking around and acting like they're in some kind of a hurry, chances are it is stolen. Also, if they refuse to give you the VIN# over the phone prior to meeting them, it's probably stolen. Generally the people selling stuff for dirt cheap are good, honest people who are hurting for money, which means they are somewhat irresponsible with keeping up with their finances. It's also means they are pretty bad at keeping up with their titles, paperwork, and pretty much everything else.

Not Atwoods. HIs sand is heavier and each lane butts up again the next, not much grass between them.

Plus, why would a Mainer drive to the south shore to rip?

Nah, could just mean their job got sent to China or India unexpectedly, and they have to downsize quick or lose their home.

While that gets you off the hook with the Cops (proves you didn't steal the bike), it doesn't get you your bike or money back when they seize the bike to get it back to the original owners.

I'm from Maine and that pic def doesn't look like any track in this state. Also, no titles for dirtbikes here. None for sleds or atvs either.

I agree about jobs being sent to China and other foreign countries, it really sucks for all of us in America. BUT, if they were financially responsible they would have established an "emergency fund" for just such an occasion and could easily make the house payment and live comfortably for at least six months. Plenty of time to sell off the "toys" at or near market value. The people who live paycheck to paycheck and somehow find a way to justify buying these "toys"(because that's what they are) are in my book, financially irresponsible. Instead of buying a new "toy" because it's fun, pay off the car, pay off the credit cards, don't accumulate more debt by buying toys. After you're out of debt(and established an emergency fund), save up and pay cash for a nice newer model used bike, or even a new one if you want. I am by NO means rich or wealthy, but I am responsible, and except for the mortgage, MY paychecks go to ME, not the bank or credit card companies. I don't believe in buying things I don't need to impress people I don't like, I prefer to live within my means. Sorry for the rant, just how I feel. I agree with you 100%, jobs desperately need brought back home.

That NCIB site is a waste of time. I just got burned on one that the NCIB and the state of NV DMV said were OK. Some how the California Highway Patrol found it to be stolen from NV when I had it VIN verified to bring it into CA. After a month of hasssles, I got most of my money back from the seller but it was a pain in the ass. What I learned was that there are many databases for stolen vehicles and they are not all created equal. NV dumps them off theirs after 4 years and NCIB only goes on if it was insured. Buyer beware but I will never buy one again without a title. It was a shitty lesson but luckily it was only a couple hundred bucks.

If the bike is hot I don't want it anyway, and hopefully my tip will help it get back to its original owner.

Then again, if you did buy a bike that the cops said was CLEAN, only because the owners hadn't reported it stolen yet, you could then be on the hook for the cash. You'd have proof you had it checked out so you wouldn't be in trouble.

It is always good to ask a lot of questions about the bike and its history if no title is present (in addition to getting it checked out). If someone is selling a stolen ride, and you ask for a vin, they are likely going to sweat bullets or "decide to keep it". There's a tip you can take straight to the police.

I would not trust that site either - it's worth checking to maybe save some initial headaches, but I would always double check with the local police department before buying.

Yeah, I hear you about being prepared for the worst. A lot of us aren't - medical bills, or other things come up and bite us on the ass sometimes. Good advice to follow.

About the jobs coming back. They won't come back as long as we keep buying the imported stuff at Wal-Mart & Target and pretty much most retail shops. I know it's not as easy to buy American as just walking in the local brick & mortar, but it's getting easier.

You could go to Wal-mart and buy a pair of $40 Levi jeans made in China/Mexico, or you can go to http://texasjeans.com and get some 100% American Made jeans for $29 (or as low as $19 if you are a woman ). Texas Jeans are made in North Carolina from U.S. made denim and zippers & snaps. None of it comes from overseas. There are lots of other American made clothing shops, but many of them are pricey. Texas Jeans are different in that they are affordable for us working scrubs, and they are durable (I have 4 pair already).

I'd like if one of the gear manufacturers would offer some reasonably priced American Made gear. I don't think anyone does right now. Scott goggles are made in the USA - so I only wear Scott.

A lot of hard parts are made here, like with the FMF pipes and such. We just need some affordable US made gear now.
