Lucky for the sport, we are emotion driven, because if sense was the only motivator, we would be offered obese clerks doing occasional racing now an then as only entertainment.

I think the reason why mx is toast in Sweden, is that there's nothing to gain that motivates the price and danger. A bit bisarre maybe since we are blessed with tax funded health care here, so the cost for rehab, operation is zero, and in Stockholm we have 10 tracks within 30 minutes, and if only ONE guy makes it, he will take a whole market of fans, media and sponsors One can discuss this, and as a supporter of the sport it feels bad saying it, but maybe a country that doesn't produce good riders, show evidence of sanity?

Again, luckily people are a bit dumb, craving for odd stuff and willing to suffer most often in vane (if succeeding is the goal), that's why we still can sit back and watch cool stuff on tv on regular bases.Grinning

But in the end, it's what we make out of our life, some are happy by not reacing their goals, which maybe is really reaching ones goals...Silly

I don't get all of the angst in this thread directed at the "industry." The great divide between the haves and the have nots and the sometimes short earning life of a participant in MX is no different from many other businesses, professions, and other sports. If you can deliver as a designer, ad acct mgr, salesman, ball player, etc., you can get paid very handsomely. If you do not, you are shown the door.

The reality is that there are riders who have made huge money over the years...and many who have not. No different than in many other fields of endeavor.

The industry has also provided a fine living for many folks who are not riders both in racing and in the related fields.

The problems associated with parents pushing their kids or later taking their money and kids without adequate preparation, education and social skills-wise, for life after MX are not the fault of the industry and are not endemic solely to this sport.

The reality is that in MX, as is the case in many other sports and professions, a tiny percentage of those who try it on for size hit the top wrung...and there is nothing wrong with that...it is just the way life is. Folks make choices and take their shot.

(I do not work in the motorcycle industry)
"The great divide between the haves and the have nots and the sometimes short earning life of a participant in MX is no different from many other businesses, professions, and other sports. If you can deliver as a designer, ad acct mgr, salesman, ball player, etc."

Compare the top 20 ball players to the top 20 motocross guys, then you'll see the DIVIDE!! Part of the issue is in regard to the danger of the sport, OUR athletes do not get what they deserve in regard to compensation, unless you only count the "best".

Do you think the people making money off of supercross (whoever that may be) are going hungry. The "suits" aren't hurting, I assure you...

Neither is the Walmart family.... What's your point.

If you don't like making minimum wage then quit and get a new job or work harder, learn and position yourself to be in a better place if thats what you desire. Also maybe learn to be humble and appreciate what you have.

I don't think you can compare a sport like baseball to mx as far as how much the athletes make. As far as the "suits", without them it would just be a bunch of guys out racing in a field somewhere for their own enjoyment. It would be nice if there was more money to go around, but there isn't. It is also no secret that most people never make much of anything in this sport, and yet there are plenty of people still trying. It's kind of like running for congress; you spend millions of dollars to get a 200k/year job, so there is more than a salary that draws people to do it.

It's not a solution, it's reality. and it's a perfect example.

The Walton family is worth more then 100 billion dollars and could make their employees lives much better, but they don't and won't. The people with the money don't give it back, they get smarter and figure out ways to make more no matter how much they have.... That's just reality.

Some people just chose what they want to see.

Very short window of opportunity in this sport. Grinds up, spits out. RC kept it real with a old Chevrolet truck and parents who didn't splurge. Anyone who gets caught up in the rock star mode in this sport is setting themselves up for future disappointment.

Enter Ryan Dungey.....head screwed on straight. Everybody likes to pile on the Dunge, but he won't ever be seen crying on national tv about being broke after being on top.

You're right, becasue the divide is so obvious!

I'm sorry, I don't care what anyone says; justification of the sport in it's current state is laughable! Letting the "suits" decide where the money goes IS the problem! Justifying greed is shameless!

My wife and I watched the episode. At the end, we looked at each other and asked ourselves "would we want our kids to go through that." We both said no.

For our family, we will use motocross as a tool to spend quality family time together. As was stater earlier in this thread, motorcycles bring a family bond that is hard to match.

In the end, like my dad taught me (we rode/ride dirt bikes together)........ life is full of choices.

I'll bet the event organizers and promoters are doing alright financially especially since they don't put back shit in the riders pockets in the form of a purse. Pretty shitty when a privateer can finish top 20 and still not make any money at the top level of our sport. Bet feld and DCs accounts look pretty nice though.

The sport has declined financially due to the simplest business rule of all: Supply and Demand.

And is it greed or reward?

Those who have sacrificed, gambled and won should be rewarded. Sometimes you lose and that paycheck doesn't look the same.

What does being paralyzed have to do with it...? A business is a business. They're dirt bike riders. People die at work, ask a cop, fireman, construction worker, road crew, teacher. Ten years ago it wasn't uncommon to die in a home depot.

I have empathy and compassion for people. but racing a dirt bike isn't a necessity for life as we know it. It's an activity.

So we agree..... There's no comparison, serving people in society is important and racing a dirt bike IS NOT. Love it or not.

Outdoor Mx and Supercross racing are a business that only serves those in that industry and has no real value beyond that. Which is why it's only important to a few people in the bigger picture of life.

American Road Racing is the same way, the guys who can win make the big bucks and the rest will not. It's not going to change anytime soon. As a privateer or lower scale factory supported rider you push to get to the top as long as you can, and if you can't make it there you do something else, but you know you tried. It is important to have those guys or we would be watching the same 8--10 riders every race.

You proved your own point with the DC thing. So if you start and run your own business and are the one mortgaging your house and putting everything thing you have on the line, you don't deserve to reap the rewards over the people who didn't(and i am not saying that the riders don't deserve more, but the reality of it is, that facts are facts and racing SX/MX are just not that lucrative ,unless your on top, and it has been that way for years). And your point about DC is perfect. He knew he wasn't going to make the big bucks riding, so what did he do? He went out and started a venture that would get him to where he wanted to be. So I hope he does reap the rewards of his wise and financially sound choices. I do see both sides of the fence on this one though. Would be awesome if we could all have our cake and eat it too, but economy, politics, semantics, whatever you want to blame it on just do not support it right now. Yes you can't blame the rider for being paid poorly, but you can blame them for still perusing that endevour when that outcome had a 90% chance at being that reality.

Edit:You edited your post after I quoted it so statements may vary

A riders union will never happen. The top guys won't share the wealth and why should they....?

Guy's like DC don't wear suit's.......

All companies are made on the backs of their employees, why should Sx/Mx be any different....? Oh yeah that's right because they get paralzed.....lol

The problem with your opinion is that it's based on your personal feelings and not reality.

And for the most part politicians do have free reign.

A riders union will never happen because the best riders have no reason to join and the riders will never all agree not to race. Everyone said they would not race at Vegas, McGrath sat it out and guess what Jeff Emig sneaks up and gets his first SX win even after he said he would not race. The only thing more cut throat than pro racing is the pro racers themselves.

So under your thinking... People like construction worker's... (all branches included) should not have a union? To guarantee
wages?

To me no matter what you are doing. When the Risk Goes up (no matter if its a sport or working in a cave) you should be guaranteed a decent workable living wage... people who have no risk as in politicians should get paid less.

btw: i keep hearing "Riders Union" you should drop the "union" part. Go look at something like the F1 drivers use FOTA (Formula One Teams Association) There are many more examples in a lot of professional sports.

But IMO i dont have a lot of faith that our little rinky dink sport has the strength or the balls for the competitors to come together and organize such an "Association" Kinda sad, we all know it NEEDS to happen. Check this out from the FOTA website:

Objectives of FOTA:

to promote the development of Formula One and enhance its worldwide image and reputation;
to represent, defend and promote the interests of its Members;
to allow its Members to debate, within the corporate bodies of FOTA, any issue (in accordance with the Articles of Association) regarding the Formula One industry and/or Formula One racing;
to co-operate with the FIA, in particular by submitting proposals for amendments to current technical and sporting regulations or for new regulations aimed at:
promoting all aspects of safety in Formula One;
achieving best practice in regulatory governance;
securing long term rule stability;

ensuring that Formula One remains at the pinnacle of motorsport as the most technologically advanced formula in the sport,
promoting close, exciting and entertaining racing; and
ensuring that competitive advantage will come principally from developments in road-relevant technologies, including technologies which will reduce the environmental impact.

Thx Chris, btw: just saw your PM this morning, was buried under all the PR stuff from the weekend, will get back to ya tonight, got a tons of shit to do, gotta go out and get some running around to do...i dont want to, but have to. Dizzy
