Why listen to people with a severe case of tunnelvision who don't have all the facts to judge? Why listen to people that are easily lead by others and there spread of negative propaganda usually on the basis of speculation? Until the riders collectively make a stand and share their grievances, nothing or very little will change immediately! Several years ago the ladies challenged Youthstream and got a result - why don't the men? Maybe, just maybe, most are happy with the current situation!

To say that there are 5 of the best and 35 who are just paying to race is really showing a lot of disrespect to a lot of very good racers. I would think more like 25 of the best in Europe and 15 who are maybe lucky to be there.

Look at the top 30 in the MX1 points. That is a pretty impressive list of riders in my opinion.

De Reuver is 18th and only raced a few GP's this year. Krestinov is 30th with only 2 races he scored points. I thought there were supposed to be 40 regular riders??? Last GP there were only 24 riders and 2 wildcard riders and in Lierop it was even worse, not 1 single wildcard-rider from Belgium or the Netherlands? How come? It used to be a completely filled startinggate with fast riders. Now they can't even find enough idiots to pay for a wildcard. And you know, those guys are right!

There are riders in there that only race a few races and score more points then those regular paying guys.
How come that De Reuver, Schiffer, Krestinov and Aubin aren't GP-riders anymore and those guys are? MONEY, money money.
Youtstream ruined it for a lot of guys that should be in there and let them walk away to local races and WC enduro.

CalimeroFan if qualifying was brought back that erratic list of riders from 18th to 30th be extended to potentially 50 names or more with just a few points. The top 10-15 would probably still be exactly as it stands now, maybe with Nagl and Frossard in there instead of Boog or Leok.

You would need to talk to the teams about the riders racing GP for money. It's been happening for 20 or more years. It's nothing YS have to do with. I look at that list and see Seb Pourcel in 15th place and everyone above him a possible podium finisher or GP winner. Negative people look at the negatvies and positive people look at the positives.

May I ask what you do for work?

Geoff, you better go in politics. You're a master in avoiding critical questions...
Why did al these riders leave?
How come there were only 26 riders at the startingline in the last GP's, when there are supposed to be 40? And I know there are a few injured riders.

And for your information I work as a salesmanager for a telecom company, why do you wanna know?
I used to go to 5 or 6 GP's a year, but I completly had it with the GP's and only go to the nations if in Europe, and some local championship races. Still a big motocrossfan but can only agree with Weisel that Youthstream is destroying the GP's. That's why I and lots of others don't go to GP's anymore. But since you (and others) keep writing that there are 15.000-20.000 spectators at every GP, you and Youtthstream probably don't care. ;-)

Sure mate, have a safe trip.

Matti doesn't even know if he is going to the MXoN, 70euro too much for a days entertainment.

Wonder if Mattie has been to a football match (which lasts less than two hours), or a concert (also about 2 hours worth) or any other sporting events. He might find out pretty quickly how cheap 70euro is for a whole days activity.

Just curious, but how much does 70 euro translate to now in U.S. dollars?

Should also point out that Youthstream are providing €2,000 travel costs for each team at the MXdN this year PLUS a purse of €21,000. But this was casually overlooked when someone else brought it up a few weeks back, as is often the case when something positive is concerned.

@ Calimero, De Reuver like many others wasn't on the shopping list of many GP teams at the end of last year or pre-season! Subsequently De Reuver raced domestically in England initially this season but when the opportunity to return was available, what happened? He got out of his contract racing domestically in England, where there is low entry fees, prize money and salary for some riders too and contested the remaining GP's! Sometimes when riders begin to struggle, they find fault in the system i.e Youthstream... similar to when people lose there job, they blame the company!

That should cover the cost for One Australian to get return trips to the race Smile

Yes, it's good that their helping out a little, and that's great for countries in Europe, but to get Team USA and all of the bikes and the technicians over there is going to cost more than 50,000 euro.

Whether it's here in the states or over in Europe or in Australia even, I've always thought travel allowances should be relative to distance and costs for each nation participating.

You're probably right, but I cant imagine YS giving 50,000 to every European team to attend an MXdN in Brazil or the US, can you!?

@ Calimero, De Reuver like many others wasn't on the shopping list of many GP teams at the end of last year or pre-season! Subsequently De Reuver raced domestically in England initially this season but when the opportunity to return was available, what happened? He got out of his contract racing domestically in England, where there is low entry fees, prize money and salary for some riders too and contested the remaining GP's! Sometimes when riders begin to struggle, they find fault in the system i.e Youthstream... similar to when people lose there job, they blame the company!
Why don't the teams contract riders like De Reuver and Aubin? Because they find slower fools who are willing to pay a lot of money for that place in a team. Since there is no qualifying anymore they are sure that they can race.

And for your information, Marc wasn't getting his salary at Lanes and lots of other thing they promised they didn't do, that's why he left as soon as Ice1 offered him Ferris' bike... Marc wanted, and maybe still wants to race Gp's but he will never pay lots of money to race without a salary. But that how the Youthstream/GP structure is at the moment. If Marc wins a Dutch open race he earns 4000 euro ($ 4800), if he wants to race a GP he has to pay more than 1000 Euro ($1200) and isn't able to earn a penny. What would you do? Right, find your luck somewhere else or quit. And that is exactly what is happening the last few years. Lots of fast riders dissapearing to local races or enduro while paying fools race GP's.

Your right Jamma, would get two thirds of our riders there Smile

Agree DC, I bet the team's from France, Germany and the Netherlands are pumped on the 2000 Euro, teams like the US, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa (do they have a team this year, mmm should check) and others 2000 Euro might mean they could bring one extra support staff.

Didn't they just let go of their team manager ? Probably have to sort out their team structure before committing to riders, I am hoping to see Ferris back there injury free next year.

Surely the US don't need any MORE support staff do they? They already bring a back up team comparable to the total population of Iceland. Grinning

I think the USA don't need half the people they have though. They make it more expensive than necessary. Ireland don't have nearly that many helping. NZ and Oz have even further to come! lol US are also the richest mx industry in the world.

A balance of distance from the track and the mx economy in that country may be a better way to do it though. Tho that is starting to sound like a complicated equation.

The other countries are much smaller that USA too. Team Ireland do fundraisers every year to help get over to whereever the race is. In the USA they had to borrow bikes, and most of the guys helping are just volunteers or part time mechanics depending on the riders selected. Totally different to how the USA do it, again due to budget restrictions.

The European teams should save their 2000 Euro each year and use it to get to the US next time there is one there lol

But since you (and others) keep writing that there are 15.000-20.000 spectators at every GP, you and Youtthstream probably don't care. ;-)
only 26 riders, that is crazy. I think Unadilla had over 80 signed up for each class.

Wow, not sure off the top of my head. I mean the set-up is pretty impressive. We are visiting some pretty awesome circuits, despite what many people might say. The actual proffesional side of the sport is impressive. I would like to see the team find more budget from the factories or bigger sponsors, but they need to work on that and it's a long process.

I have no problem with riders wanting to race and finding a personal sponsor who pays their entry into a team. I love the way the Euro championships now run with the GPs, that is really going to help our sport no end.

It would be nice to see some type of prizemoney system formed, be that from outside sponsors or whatever. I mean once the prizemoney was taken out the riders got the teams to put into their contract roughly what they might have mad, so the riders, at least the top 10 or so in that era had that written into their contracts. Mind you that was then and I don't know how they do it now.

YS decided many years ago to put a lot of money into television and the presentation of the GPs. People don't understand that thats a pretty expensive excerise and it's made our sport look a lot better. Youthstream are always looking for ways to make the sport in Europe look cooler and they continue to hire people who can help them do that. That all costs money, but people just assume YS stick the money in their pocket, but it isn't the case.

I generally try and ask former riders what they think, and guys like Dave Thorpe has said he feels the riders don't know how lucky they are now with the professionalism of the sport and the way the circuits are prepared. I would rather listen to a guy like Thorpe than some bloke on a forum who just wants to be negative because everyone else is.

I would love to see the Saturday race as a mixed MX1/MX2 race, would be fun on some circuits to see how they would end up.

Geoff
Thanks for the reply Geoff, much appreciated.

I think even the most cynical observer, or harshest critic, of YS would acknowledge the significant investment that's been made in the infrastructure supporting/promoting the GP series. Whether that same investment is generating an adequate financial return for all concerned is, from my perspective, one of two fundamental issues (the other being the wider commercial relationship between YS and the FIM).

Perhaps YS, would like to create a virtual 'suggestions box' on their website, where fans - with or without rose-tinted glasses - could propose various improvements/amendments for consideration by the Motocross Grand Prix Commission?!

You can better ask the teams mate, I am just a fan. You blame YS for the teams signing riders who bring money? Madness!!!!! And just to keep you informed, I never write about the figures of an event, or very rarely.

I know the Aus riders are all on bikes from Euro teams, all factory bikes as well which is a bonus.

I know our MX2 rider is on a Dixon Yamaha and his Aussie team are taking their own suspension and will try both the Dixon and their own suspension in sand before the race.

Think New Zealand are in the same boat for their MX1 and MX3 riders (Coppins and Cooper) Though not sure what the go with their MX2 rider Kayne Lamont, he was a privateer on a 250 two stroke in Australia this year, but I think has spent some time racing in Europe so may have had a bike over there to use.
