Depressing clip... Colin Winkelmann (the rider) and Nate Wessel (the ramp builder) entered that Nitro Circus competition. Colin totally screwed his feet up and had to have numerous reconstructive surgeries. It was one of those Josh Hill situations, except he died before he made a full recovery. If I remember correctly - this is almost ten years ago - the time limit for the competition was about to expire so they didn't have much preparation time to judge the speed, etc. They basically just went for it! The goal was for Colin to backflip the ramp. A year or two after the crash, and to the shock of the entire bmx community, he tragically committed suicide after a breakup with his girlfriend.

Colin Winkleman was a badass on a bicycle. that wreck right there ended his biking career and in many people opinion, his life.

Holy crap.

Absolutly meant NO disreaspect when I started this thread - I had no idea who the rider was or what happened to him later on.

Anyone know why he commited suicide?

wow, that was a very sad story... i remember when i first watched that on the Nirtro Circus video i cringed and never thought it was funny. horrible to hear the aftermath and his death later down the road

Sometimes people leave a note or something behind singes sometimes people know. I'd always heard that crash basically ruined him and he ciuldnt really rife his bike anymore, but I can't say for certain that's why he committed suicide.

Dirtnapper, don't feel bad. You had no way of knowing, and really, the crash doesn't look that bad compared to some of the stuff we have all seen on the internet people walk away from. On the same day that happened, Streetbike Tommy had his infamous front flip crash over Travis' foam pit, and came out of it in way better shape than Colin.

The suicide
This thread got me thinking about Colin yesterday. I watched some of his old videos and read about his suicide some more. The suicide thing happened after he broke up with his girlfriend, but as others mentioned, he was probably also going through a lot considering the impact the injuries had on his professional life. The saddest thing about the stuff I read last night, was that he was talking about suicide to his close friends, but nobody took him serious because of his happy nature/personality. As a mental health worker, that really sucked to read for a number of reasons.


A letter Colin wrote about and after the crash.

My brother and i wore out all our road fools tapes, they were epic video's! Loved the soundtracks to those videos too.

What we would have given to see the US, road tripping like that.

Those guys were head cases though, especially Levan and Crandall! Buck Chocolate in the back of the neck!
