Haven't been on one since 05,and ya'll got me wondering. Found an RM250 that had straight gas run through it,
I never did that in all of my ring ding days. I know it will need a new top end,will it need a crank too ? Thinkin' about
pickin' it up tonight,my 09 RMZ450 needs a stable mate.

I'd freshen the crank and lower end bearings and seals. What year model?

If you can get it cheap enough, go for it. Good chance it needs crank/bearings.

Freshen the motor up, and put it in the RMZ chassis. Sell the 450 motor to some idiot with a gokart for 2000 bucks and part the 250 chassis out.

With a blown engine I'd shoot for the $600.00 range. Once you get it together it will basically be a $1600.00-1800.00 bike if it's in good shape. You'll probably be adding tires, tubes, chain, sprockets , plastics, seat cover, graphics, grips.....you know how it is once you get started.Smile

buy it!!! I picked up an 04 RM250 the guy did the same exact thing and it broke off the skirt of the piston. Pulled the whole motor apart and everything was fine just needed to re-plate the cylinder and put a top end in.... best bike ever and paid 900 for it. You should be very happy with it. I used it as a stable mate to my 250f RMZ. Good luck!

for what it's worth, i owned an 05 RM250 with basic bolt ons. They make the Yamaha feel like an electric wheelchair. Serious bark in the 05+ motor, and nothing will turn inside of it, other than maybe an RM125 from the same year.

I think I'll offer 800,since supposedly his friend pulled this bonehead move. I think I'll do a complete resto even though it
looks pretty low hour (stock graphics,chain,sprockets,frame doesn't have much paint wore off). Since my main track seems to
be pretty much closed for the summer, I've got the time.

100% new bottom end. They are cheap and that will fail sooner rather than later and will likely take out other parts with it.

I'd buy it. You have to do the motor anyway. Don't do the top without doing the bottom. Remember, nothing in that motor got lubrication with the straight gas, including con rod bearing and crank bearings, and that creates a lot of friction and heat. Did he run it a long time on it? Go thru it all. You'll have a great bike that's a blast to ride, for not a lot of money.

Yep, it's gonna need a bottom and top end. But for $600-800, it's a good buy if the suspension, frame, and clutch/ tranny is okay.

dude do it, it's a two stroke, the whole thing will probably cost $14 to rebuild, and I bet they stock all the parts at your local home depot

Long story short, if you can get it cheap enough and all it needs is a new top and bottom end, you can get wiseco, hot rod, and multiple other high performance cranks as well as a wiseco topp end with a an athena or moose full gasket kit and it shoudnt cost you THAT much to have it in tip top shape without too much investement into it so you can decide how much you like the 2 stroke again .....oh and FYI: The 2004 RM250 was the bike of the year hands down by many magazines, I have 2 06's and an 01 and they are anazingly flawless bikes with a fun factor that is immeasureable. ... With that being th case .... Id pull the trigger asap! It will be a fun project and once youre done seeing as how its still pretty new, youre gonna enjoy the crap out of it!!!!

I look for those deals all the time on CL and when I find em, I swoop them up quickly, restore them and ride or sell.....mostly keep them. My ultimate goal is to have EVERY last generation Japanese 250 2 Stroke in my garage to ride whatever whenever. Also a 05 + Rm or yZ125 w a Eric Gorr Stage 3 144kit...... Maybe 1 450 and 1 250f, certainly 1 500 smoker. Then my life will be complete. Smile

You should totally buy it. I don't know if I would bother with a full restoration, especially if it is in that sort of condition. I'd just get it mechanically sound and ride it, but that's just me. I know parts are much cheaper and more readily available in the US, but it could cost a fair bit to fix the motor - top end, bottom end, probably a new cylinder - plus anything else on the bike that is worn or broken. It would be a cool project though. Remember to post pictures when(if) you get it.

Go as low as possible. You don;t know what you will find once you go in! I found a 04 YZ125 for $400, just low compression. Im picking it up Saturday! Hoping for no other surprises!

First time the 01 engine blew it was the skirt of the oem stock original piston ......luckily the piece went into a transfer port and didn't harm the cylinder or bottom end. The 2nd time the top of the piston hit the powervalve and broke off just above the ring a small 1.5" arc'ed piece of the piston. No more cast pistons in my RM's. Forged Wiseco pistons from now on since they stand less of a chance of breaking..... Hell I had the 01 recently rebuilt head to toe about 4 months ago and STILL haven't had a chance to ride it. Now with my broken tib/fib I won't be riding till at least after new years ...no moto, hills or desert Sad I HATE not being able to ride. I was in the best shape of ky life when this happened and was getting ready to race milestones summer series.

It was already sold by the time I got off work,oh well,more to put toward my 2013 CRF450. I actually wanted a 125 anyways,
and will still be on the lookout.
