Georgia Motocross Trip

Edited Date/Time 7/2/2012 12:23pm
So me and a couple of friends are making the trip up to durhamtown june 29th and are planning on riding friday and saturday at Dtown, then sunday moring we will run over to Aonia Pass Mx to finish the weekend off. I live in South georgia and have never had the chance to make the trip to durhamtown or any of the other tracks near atlanta till now. Can anyone that has been to these two tracks give me some insight on what to expect and any tips that i may need. I already have a four person cabin with air conditioning reserved at durhamtown and i am extremely excited.

My buddies and I bang out 5 laps on each track at Dtown then hammer out the trails to the next and do the same over again all day. We usually ride 6-7 hours of seat time per day. Bring Advil or something for the next day! Great place, enjoy.

Bring some dust masks for DP, or wait to come a day after a rain.

Taking my kid up from West Central Fl. for the races there that weekend, we're in Chipmunk Palace #1 cabin. If it doesn't look like a good turnout for the race Sunday maybe we'll follow you over to Aonia.

I didnt know they had races planned that weekend. I will be the 6'5 skinny kid riding a 2004 cr250. I am really looking forward to riding Aonia after all the good things i have heard about the facility.

I reserved the fox trot cabin for 4. Has anyone ever stayed in the fox trot and what is it like?

I'll be there that weekend. Campsite 63. Suzukis #41 and #42, plus 3-4 other riders. Suppose to have concerts there each night. Probably a true Hillbilly weekend. Will be riding during the day. After 6, pretty much drinking beer, playing cards, fishing, or just cutting up. Its a great facility.

The bomber track will be closed for the race. Dont know how much of a MXer u are, but, I was raised full blooded So Cal MXer. So the hard pack suits me just fine. If your use to preped, loamy, rutted, it wont be there.

We usually hit a couple of the tracks, then hit the trails, do some of the tighter ones, hit the MX tracks in the woods (seriously, u will be riding, and all of the sudden there is a MX track in front of you), then ride back. Then there is always the flat track to hang it out, continuous red, red, red, yellow, green dragstrip to race your buddies on.

If we really feel like suffering, we'll do some single track. There are at least 7 tracks, 100 miles of trails, and probably 100 miles of single track, fishing hole, mudbog, skeet shooting, endurocross, hunting, BMX track, freestyle, proshop, and restaurant. You cant go wrong. It would take a week to do everything.

Will the bomber track be closed on friday also? If it is i will be very dissapointed because that was the track i was looking forward to ride.

I'm not sure if the Bomber will be opened or not on Friday. you could check with Dtown. Saturday is an organized practice day on the Bomber, so you could sign up for that, and that should give you an arm band to ride the whole facility, plus get some practice sessions in on the Bomber which should be nicely prepped for the race weekend.

Unless it rains soon, D'town will be hard as asphalt and dusty as hell this weekend. The Bomber is usually prepped and watered, not sure if it's open this weekend though. I don't ride the Bomber that much as I am old and slow, I usually ride the trails, and if I ride a track it's usually the "Swamp", "MX-6", or the "GP". They are not very difficult, but if you want to lay down a bunch of laps without over-extending yourself they are okay.

Bomber is open on Saturday for practice, I would think open to everybody instead of just those who are racing on Sunday.

I did a TripAdvisor review I liked it so much:

Let's start off by saying it isn’t about the rooms at DP - it's about the riding!

Our cabin was about $65/night, it was the Wolf Den 2 - it had two full sized beds, bathroom with shower, sink in the room, fridge, TV (bring DVD's!) and microwave. No Frills describes it, but clean and you just have to stay here...

Cell reception was poor and WiFi was really s-l-o-w...

Out front we had a picnic table and a bonfire pit. It was mint! We split it - so only $35/night.

The food here sucks so bring all your own....sometimes no meals are served during the slow seasons and Washington is about 15-20 miles away. Bring lots of drinks, food, etc. To eat in town, Zaxby’s and Huddle House were both good, the Pizza Hut was the WORST EVER – do NOT bother!

You can buy EVERYTHING ELSE there - from gas to clutch plates to firewood to renting bikes/quads. You can do your laundry - $2 wash and $1.50 dry...both bike wash and laundry use quarters...

They have the best pro shop I have ever seen! And everyone was really really nice. I can't wait to go back again....

I've been riding at DP for years. I always try to get 100 miles a day in there!
I also think that www.highlandparkresort.com is worth the visit.
Oh, and you can demo/rent all the fancy new KTMs while you are there.

It is a Best in Georgia Series race. Saturday is an organized practice with multiple classes. There are usually three 15 minute practice sessions per class and you do need a practice sticker on your bike to practice. However, you can sign up for practice, get your wrist band and practice sticker, and ride your scheduled practices and the rest of DTown on Saturday. You do not need to race Sunday in order to practice Saturday. I am not afiliated with DTown so if I am wrong, shoot me, but that is how this series has aways been run.

Thanks for all the great info. I really hope the bomber track will atleast be open friday so i wont have to pay extra to practice on it saturday. I just dont want to get stuck riding hard packed tracks for two days. If i do then i will atleast get to ride aonia pass on sunday.

More tips:

Don't ride on the road. I did to get over to my cabin and the owner tore me a new one.

Bring $2 in quarters for the bike wash. $1 isn't enough time.

I thought the food was ok at DP. We went into Athens at night to eat or drink.

The pro shop is good and so are the cabins. It would be considered roughing it if you brought your wife or girlfriend.

DO NOT get one of those squirrel helmet mowhawks in the proshop! Watch out for those clowns.

If it's like the race last year, you don't have to pay extra to practice Saturday. Instead of going to the main desk in the lodge to get your wristband, go wherever they are having signup for the practice. Your practice fee will get you a wrist band to ride the rest of the park in addition to allowing you to practice on the Bomber.

You mean the track that was actually deep tilled and watered every weekend, with lots of ruts that people whined about?

Hard-pack is a PITA to crash on. Give me comfy squishy loam over the sun-baked red brick & dust tracks around here.

So i just got back from my extremely hot trip to durhamtown and aonia pass mx. I was really dissapointed when they told me i couldnt ride the bomber track without paying an extra $20 just for 3 ride sessions. Unfortunately i got stuck riding the hard pack big buck track which was the only track worth riding. My tires were like new and now they are balded over from that track. The jumps were really fun but i was kind of dissapointed with the rest of the track. Luckily on the 3rd day of the trip we got to ride at Aonia Pass Mx which was really fun. The facility was nice, great jumps, and pretty good dirt except for the rocks. Aonia pass really made the trip worth it in the end. Over all we had a great time even while having to endure 110 degree weather saturday and today.

It ended up being 4 15 minute ride sessions on a near perfectly groomed killer track. That track when prepped has got to be a top 3 track in the Southeast no question. You missed out on a really good deal for $20. Hot can't even describe the weather.
