Looking to improve shifting action of the 465.
Is there a shift lever that is a little longer than the factory piece?
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Contact Race Tech. They used to make a linkage shifter for YZ's. It pivoted off of the swingarm pivot and then connected to the shift shaft by the linkage. It worked great. I used one on my 1990 YZ 125. It might be able to be modified for other bikes that it was not designed for. Talk to Paul Thede and tell him that Mike Black says hey!

Is it not as smooth as you want it to be? You might have worn shift forks. That would make it take more effort to shift. At 30 years old I wouldn't be surprised. I have 1 good trans and one with worn forks.

I installed a shifter since posting this thread so here's a little more detail.
I leave the gate in 2nd gear........What I experience is a very slight chatter when engaging 2nd gear from neutral for the start.
Not really a problem but I do find myself missing a gear once or twice during a moto so I'm thinking it's something more than just the length of the shifter. I've tried different trans oils, belray "gearsaver", redline and royal purple just to see if any of them would improve shift action. I'm sure the trans will need some service before to long.
Anyway, thought I'd throw this info into the discussion. Oh yeah, it's an '80 model.

Worn shift forks and rounded engagement dogs on the gears. I had the same thing on my 465. It was a little worse under a load like going uphill.

The 80 model 465's would basically frag the transmissions to death under a season of hard racing / riding. Yamaha made some improvements to the 81 (H) model, but even they were prone to tranmission failure.

Heck, my 1980 YZ250 grenaded a gearbox just four months after leaving the show room floor from new.

1980 was not a good year for Yamaha YZ250 / 465 transmission reliability.

Buy as many transmission parts you can find , if you plan on keeping the bike and using it very often.

Old request, but who knows how quick we respond? I have a CRF 150 gear shift, its about 1.5 inches longer than stock.

Didn't Dubach lose an AM "STOCK" title due to that shifter?

Hi Mikeyam, your probably right, without looking back I do remember something on those lines. My addition was just about a shifter that was a bit longer than the stock item and fit straight on. The failing DD suffered was likely due to the mechanism rather than the lever. In 82 Yam went to a four speed box in the same casings, probably the extra gear made room for a 25% fatter gear on the remaining four. I put a gearbox shot on the www.yz465.info site ages ago, the picture is all over the net now, but it is an original five speed box. Perhaps if I rode as hard as Dr D I would be shredding gears, but for now, she is strong and intact.
