Gary Wells? Same dude who almost killed himself jumping over the fountains at Ceasars Palace. Funny that Metzger friggin' back flipped over them a few years back.

I knew that was Gary Wells by his signature blue suit. I had no idea where it was though.

Gary Wells was a bad ass, he said someone moved his ramps. I always wondered how he missed it that bad, was there wind that day? it was on the cover of a magazine I remember seeing it on the rack. His run up to the ramp curved a bit.

Yep,,,I'm pretty sure wind was a major factor in him missing the ramp. Yes and I agree Gary was amazing,,,at age 15 he beat Kneivels jump record, he could ride a wheely sitting on the bike backwards while going up the take off ramp that went way up the seats in the dome!!!

I'm an hour late but the first thing that came to mind when i saw the suit was Gary Wells. The CR450's are 81 models though. Was he back to jumping stuff that fast? I thought he was pretty buggered up from Ceasars. The mangled up 1980 CR250 obviously was the Ceasars bike. I have a sweet super low hour rolling chassis from one of those I'm donating to my favorite evil machinist/ Vitalite so he can stuff a 83 CR480 engine in it.

Cool stuff, never seen those pics!

BTW,,,he barely made this jump,,,he told everyone he was going to no hand the jump, he didn't, he must have gotten some bad wheel spind or something, but he only made the jump by 12-16 inches, I took these photos I had a front row seat and saw the jump, pretty scary, and this was his come back jump from vegas, it was way too close. St. Louis media gave it alot of press, I have the original press clippings.

He always claimed someone from Kneivel's "crew" moved the ramp.

I think that was Johnny Airtime, I also think he jumped over the top of two helicopters whilst their blades were spinning..

That was Roger Wells - aka Johnny Airtime. No relation to Gary.

I'm amazed that Gary actually did more jumps after Caesars. I had no idea that he did.

Its Gary Wells, not sure that particular jump though. He ended his career (and almost life) trying the Cesars Palace fountain jump on TV (I can't recall the shows names but it was people trying a lot of dumb stunts).

The whole "someone moved my ramps" was bull imo. You can see the rear end kick out as he left the ramp. I'm guessing he spun the real wheel on the ramp because he had to be on the throttle so hard on the run up.

The show that filmed the jump at ceasers was called{THATS INCREDIBILE}

Landing ramp is like 8 ft wide too. WTF? I would want a WIDE ass landing ramp for just that reason. Hay bails are super cheap too. Pretty stupid not to line those walls with some padding of some kind.

The take off, landing, approach are all greatly improved today including the elevation of them. Night and day you can't compare let alone the bikes. Those guys were nuts.

I raced Gary Wells when we were both about 12 (1968) in Phoenix. He was a pretty fast TT racer but had never raced motocross before. They didn't have age classes back then, just Jr. (Novice) and Sr. (Expert), and we were in 125 Jr. It was before anyone had really figured out starting procedures so we would all put our clutch hands on our helmets and hold our heads right next to the clutch. Anyway, he went 1-1 - just pretty much checked out - and I went 3-2. I have a picture of the second moto start somewhere with Gary wearing blue TT leathers racing a white tank AT-1 Yamaha and me on my Penton and Torsten Hallman leathers.
