Good topic here, gang. It came up on the TV conference call on Monday. We need to find a way to give the athletes a platform to name their top sponsors, but not a soap box to name all 30, plus their neighbors, and their dog, and so on and so forth... The NASCAR guys do a great job of just naming the main ones, and not every single one of their sponsors. A rider may only get 30 or 45 seconds to do an interview, and while they need to get some thanks out there, they need to work on not using the entire time to read off their rear fender or chalk board. It comes off as rote, or even script-reading, and it's not really good TV....

Any suggestions? A graphic for each team so we don't hear all 19 sponsors of the 250 Class winner? A scroll or ticker on the bottom?

Seriously, this is something that we have heard about for years -- when I was the pit reporter for ESPN they would get mad at me for not cutting guys off, and I'm like, He's Jeremy McGrath, no way I'm cutting him off! And guys like MC and Emig were really good at not going over the top.... Nowadays, it seems like it's getting longer and longer...

I don't think they really need to mention their sponsors, considering they are wearing all the logos, holding drinks, wearing watches, hats or whatever. I understand that the sponsors are very important, but other sports with much more sponsorship money involved dont have their athletes reeling out a list or even mentioning individual sponsors. I can't remember seeing a F1 driver or football (soccer) player mentioning their sponsors in a way remotely similar to the way these MX guys are doing it, even in the MXGP's the guys don't do it

Problem solved. Although I do enjoy an occasional thank you to the real people behind the scenes as long as it doesn't come off like they are reading a script. Some are just better at it then others.

Would the TV networks allow a display/scroll at the bottom of the screen? Essentially they are giving free advertisement to companies that don’t pay them (the networks).

I would suggest having "Mitch from Pro-Circuit" and "Jeff from Parts Unlimited" join your next conference call Davey.

But in all honesty, if Blake Bagget and friends didnt ramble it off every time, I would have no idea they are sponsered by Jeff from Parts Unlimited, Vans, Volcom and Toyota of Escondito. Monster, Pro-ciruit and Kawi are obvious, the others not so much.

Maybe the Jeffrey Herlings approach should be tried out at Budds Creek....that Malin guy sure thought it was cool.

Every Barcia reponse, and interview, is the exact same thing every time. As he is not looking at the person interviewing him or the camera. Rehearsed? never

the kawasaki guys are the worst.........it's like 15 companies, both factory guys and mitch's guys...............Alessi was good last week, seemed really authentic, to new fans who don't know it all, but probably the sponsors not likin it so much as they want us to "hear" who they are!!

the scrolling deal would be awesome..............everyone is good with hat on straight, goggle logos up front.............why don't all the teams just have some towels printed up with all the logos...........useful and would be ez to position on the shoulder........would be almost as good as the jerseys............

and then like most car guys just mention the main guys and not read the whole fender/sidepanel/fork logos.............it's just getting waay waay too much as sport grows and sponsors grow...........I'm sure some compromise could make everyone happy to give us all a better presentation on TV as that is really what everyone is after........

and by the way DC, even with a few glitches here and there, compared to what it has been........the Internet and TV package you and your group have put together is AWESOME!!!!!!! thanks................

whatabout all the thanks sent to the man above? I think its right up there with to much pr being done and almost disgusting to hear the religious shit on the podiums. Please leave that out and let us know what the race was really like.
It would be a blast to hear some more honest things, like what did you think of that pass, was that a clean start/holeshot, any gameplan for the 2nd moto. There are so many things that could make the podiums much more intresting.

No, kidding. That's the time they need to do that for their sponsors. The after podium interviews are different.

Each racer should be handed a copy of the Senna film at scrutinising and forced to watch it before first practice. haha.

Just an idea off the top of my head, but wouldn't it be more effective if the racers dropped the URL for a team website? Rather than 20 x random company names NO ONE remembers? People would only check the sites if they were engaged, that would only happen if the riders were themselves... and if viewers made it as far as the website, they'd give a shit & be putty for the teams sponsers. The team could pump the site with branded content, behind the scenes videos, photos, blogs from the crew... pretty out there, but a forward thinking team could pull this off and us geeks would lap it up.

Out of interest: What do the teams want? Would the teams prefer the logos on screen and the riders being themselves? Are the sponsers stoked when they are included in the mono tone robot spiel?

PaleBlue nailed it, any change in this part of the show is going to have to come from the interviewers side. Your podium finishers are usually the same group of riders. The questions shouldn't come out of a can, but should rider specific, and the interview somewhat guided based on what rider. And I agree the last 5-10 seconds dedicated to sponsors.

Yep, US podium speeches are crap but don't blame the riders the teams put them up to it and, more relevantly, the TV lets them get away with it. If the TV co's said enough! it's boring we ain't gonna show the speeches then the riders would have to clean up thier act. BTW how about some thought going into the questions too? After all, "what does this mean to you?" seems to be the only thing they ever get asked! How many different answers can you give to the same question?

If you want to hear how it should be done try listening to F1, Moto-GP, WSB etc.... In fact anything non-american.....

F1 stuff enjoy!
Good post. If F1 (with all that money on the line) can function without this nonsense - what are we doing? Must be so bad for new fans first impressions too.

Really annoying and imagine the rider trying to learn his sponsor speach in front of a mirror every day !!!
Fresh of a hard phisical and mental task.
Must be a burdon for them as well...If they miss one.. do they get hell? does the sponsor stop or limits help? how does that really work? It is annoying but must be interesting to hear from them what the instructions and consecuences of not doing this or doing it wrong are.
Do they make a casting to see how well a racer develops before and after a race in this matter?
Scroll this shit and give those guys and all of us a break!!!

yeah but quite a bit of difference in multi billion dollar company sponsors of arguably the largest watched sporting event in the world with multi-national feeds.............

we're stoked that 215K tuned into Fuel and in Italy alone F1 is on 2 - 3 National channels, live, every race..........the big guys like Monster probably aren't too concerned, but some of the smaller guys might have concerns to not get their 1.3 seconds of fame............but just based on this thread alone there has to be a better way!!

I'd say it will get to the point where it will result in a combination of ignorance / selective hearing /autopilot for both parties (riders and viewers) and another tactful approach will have to be put forth.

Hey DC, did you say anything to the teams/riders about the podium interviews this week because they were much better.

It was refreshing to hear Tickle say that even at his level, he was delighted to be taking home a national trophy. nice work.

Thank you to all.

All except for you know who. He started out good, answered the question showed some of his own personality......
then out it come. Now, i am not trying to attack anyone personally, thats not my intent at all.

So,yes I did just as people on here suggested and "tuned out". Im sure most people did. So whoever's decision it is to continue with the shopping list speech, your not actually helping all those sponsors. We are all tuning out!

Someone needs to tell Justin Barcia to slow the fuck down when he talks. Seriously he talks faster than he rides. I can't understand a word he says!

Right now I think Barcia is the worst on the podium precisely because he didn't used to be so bad and I know he can do better. It's like Barcia tries to get every answer out in one sentence so he can concentrate on whatever he's looking at in the distance. Embarrassing.

Dungey has always made me cringe. I watch in amazement as he tries to look comfortable, but clearly is not. It seems that he has 10 canned answers that he goes through no matter what the question is. It's so bad I enjoy it. Dungey is much, much better when he's not on the podium in other video pieces. He's sounds human and relatively normal.

Guys I like on the podium that I can think of right now, Tickle, Windham, Chad, Roczen, Langston, Stewart, Canard, Ivan. I like Alessi on the podium, but he almost seems desperate, but I believe he's sincere.

I always just gave them the benefit of the doubt & assumed that they were contractually bound to list all the sponsor names. I think of the famous "hat dance" that nascar drivers go through & would say consider some sort of large banner or background that you could take footage of each rider in front of with all of their sponsor logos on it, holding whatever drink sponsor they might have and so on & then after the podium speeches or just at the end of the broadcast the footage of them in front of said billboard/banner/background could be shown for a short timespan

If I remember correctly the most popular riders were the ones with "let loose" personalities

Tyler Evans

Guy Cooper

M.C.

Fro

Pastrana

KDub

JLaw for other reasons

Journalism, ask good questions and turn them loose a lil.

Interview top three the find a fan fav like One Punch! And stop the take us through by Erin shit.

The scrolling idea has been brought up many times on here for years. It's a great option as the sponsors get their name on there while letting the rider talk naturally. I mean, really, does anybody think having a rider read a bunch of names to thank help with advertising?

I think it makes the sponsors look worse, not better.

Have the professional announcers doing the interview say the riders name and sponsor list on the lead in to the podium interviews. That would free up the rider to answer questions or talk about the race. All the teams do is provide the media a current list of sponsors for their riders. Very simple

My guess is the riders would rather say 20 brand names instead of coming up with something original to say on their own and that is why nothing has been done about it.

Baggett is the worst. I never watch his. Stewart, Reed, Canard, and Windham are really good at interviews. They list a few big sponsors then answer the questions about the race, showing their personality while doing so.

Dale Earnhardt Jr after his win: ..."I want to thank my team." The sum total of his mention of team and sponsors.

And he answered a lot of questions. Really answered them.
