Has anyone ever won major US series races on different brands in the same year before? (I'm thinking regular championship series races, not post-season like MEC, US Open, Bercy etc.) Surely Stewart wasn't the first?

Hmmm, good question.
If someone else has, I think you'd have to go back to the 70's.
Marty Tripes maybe? He switched brands often and at least once in the same year. Gary Jones rode Honda and Maico in 1 year but don't think he won on the latter.

That is a very interesting question. I bet that is the trivia Racer X planned on doing for their weekly Racer X Bench Racing Ammo column.

If they want to use it they can pm me and I'll gladly delete the post so we don't steal their thunder. I don't have the answer, my moto memory only goes back to the mid-80s and I can't think of anyone since then.

I think that is counting the US Open, which the original poster stated he didn't want counted.

Emig was on a Yamaha in 1995 and I think he was 2nd in the nationals to McGrath. Emig won the outdoors in 1996 on a Kawasaki, McGrath won the Supercross championship in 96. Anyone have any pictures of Emig's 95 Yamaha, one of my favorite bikes.

Yeah, I think that's right. He lost his Kawi ride right before the Open and won the Open on the Yamaha if I remember right.

I know you are looking for the US but Marvin Musquin started on a Honda and switched mid series to KTM and won the 250 world title in 2009.
