The general safety issue was almost null & void. As pointed out by people in the other threads there have been many other sporting events held in Mexico recently without any trouble and all the teams agreed to go from the outset. There was little, if any debate about it.

The ONLY issue here was the amount of dust and lack of watering for Saturdays qualifying races. Everything else is largely irrelevant.

But the fact is, everyone agreed to go in the first place. Other than one confirmed mugging which is a possibility in ANY other country in the world, the event has gone without a hitch in that regard.

The only issue was the fact the track had not been watered adequately and the vast majority of riders felt it right to stand firm until the organisers dealt with their concerns. There is nothing wrong with that. They are vastly experienced riders and I doubt they would take such a stance if they genuinely didn't feel it was worth it. Yet somehow its just turned into another 'Shame on Youthstream' where everyone is quick to criticise them for everything and anything.

I don't think that finding a body near the entrance of the track should be considered going off without a hitch. Living in El Paso I don't feel an MX race is 100% safe to run in Mexico right now. They need to get one big drug lord before it will be safe again like it was in the 90's.

Such big words Calories, if you were there you should have come to see me in person! After 22 years in the GP's we have come a very long way, I don't need to defend my actions they were my opinions based on the facts I had in front of me, I am not a sheep!
Were you at the riders strike in 93 in Boras over the hidden rocks, or when Stefan and co went on strike for 10 mins in South Africa? and nothing went down from either. Did I go on strike for months in my engineering union when we wanted better working conditions? yes! did we loose lots of wages? yes, did we get what we deserved ? yes but it took a lot of hard sacrifices, like no money to pay the morgage, little money for food, real hardship.
I am all for track safety, which is why I had all the dirt at Matterley screened and all stones removed!
Did I think the track was dusty? yes. I did not say anything about it not being dangerous.
The trouble was I was asked 30 seconds after the sighting lap before the guys were due to go on the line! in the 30 minute delay whilst they were watering not one person came to me and said "we are not riding" there was not protest list or anything, riders all had their kit on and went to the line.
I said this was a bad and un-professional way to try to resove this issue and that the riders should have maybe done a parade race as it was live on Mexican TV and stayed in their quali positions. Thus giving the organisers overnight to work the track, then the decision not to race could have been made around the table rather that putting Tortelli into financial suicide. Oh yes the papers and TV announced the Sunday race was cancelled ! I am no Youthstream muppet! but we all need each other, we have nothing if we do not have sponsors, sponsors have nothing if there is no TV or good exposure, then no meney eqauls no wages for riders and it goes back to an amatuer sport, it is a vicious circle but there are better way to achieve results.
It was unfair to put that pressure on Tortelli, I know what he must have put on the line, I am sure he wanted it right, but it is difficult and yes it should have been much better on the Saturday, but we are all in racing because we are passionate about the sport, which is why we all need to work together in a positive way. For safety, for our rights but just in a more co-ordinated way where we know the facts and we know the true concequences.
By the way to wishing riders to get hurt though Karma is truley sick, they both got hurt in racing incidents.
I was man enough to go to the MX1 riders and say the reason I let Michael ride and suggested the parade to them. And yes I allowed Shaun not to go out.
So please come to me the next time you are at a race and tell me what you have put into the sport over the years
It is funny that you call the riders unprofessional when at the same time the "ooh so important live tv coverage" was the baddest I saw in 20 years and that I never heard so many riders complain about the track, being robbed... A rider even tweeted that if there comes a new Mexican GP he takes a gun!! Be bloody real!!

And it is true that we all need each other and a good TV Coverage is important but last year the year started without TV Coverage were where you guys then? And this wasn't a good tv coverage. I hope that you had the time to watch the Grand Prix on MX-Life.TV... They missed the start the first heat MX2. The quality was so bad that you almost couldn't read the numbers so I wont' speak about sponsor logos because those where impossible to see! The TV Director didn't knew a thing about motocross I think because the first two heats we saw more Mexican hero's and guys who where fighting for place ten then we saw the first riders!

That you aren't a sheep is a good argument but those riders aren't either! They didn't like the track and it wasn't only the track! The lack of a good medical staff for example and the Mexican local hero's who where riding +30s slower! Those things are unprofessional too! One of your rider is now injured because of one of these locals! When money is more important then racing skills you get this sh*t!

That the Mexican TV said that the race on Sunday was canceled isn't that the fault of the organizers of the Grand Prix? Shouldn't they communicate a bit better about this stuff?

Bye the way this assclown puts almost 20 years money into the sport? Allot of money to watch great riders ride. I pay some money to go to National Championships and allot of money to go to Grand Prixs. Grand Prixs like yours and those costs everyone tons of money! In return you expect something good with the 40 best European riders on the gate! Bye the way this is isn't probably not as important as what you did but without fans you would be unemployed!

PS: The karma thing was maybe a bit over the edge! Sorry about that. But YS makes tons of money with riders who are paying to ride with the high income prices with mx-life.tv with thousands other things and then they can't get a good TV coverage?? That must be very irritating for teams because there sponsors doesn't get there TV time!

I don't agree with you often but why people argue with you about this is beyond me. You live there and you know.

I have a relative that retired from the Mexican Government , He told me flat out do not cross the border it's not safe.

I think it's fair to say if you're living in El Paso, your perspective is going to be colored by the Juarez situation, which is incredibly horrendous, but not necessarily representative of Mexico as a whole. I'm not trying to minimize the situation and risk in the reall hot bed areas as where you are, but I spent a week covering a lot of territory south of Mexicali last year and was more than happy for my teenage son to head back down this year to build homes. There's a lot of good people down there who don't have much and really can't expect much from their government.

Now, that begs the question of what YS wanted to accomplish by having a race in Guadalajara, and why it really looks like there wasn't enough put into it, let alone the extra measure of planning and support that comes with putting on an event in new area for a new fan base. As fragile as the economics of this sport are, and you're kidding yourself if you think the economics aren't fragile, it seemed like a stretch from the beginning.

It's a real shame about Juarez. My pop used to spend a lot of time in El Paso with Chevron in the 60's and early 70's, and we enjoyed heading over. Have some great memories, and it's shame to think of what happened. Pop, who was pretty conservative, said many times the disparity between the haves and have nots was so great he wondered why they had not had another revolution. Instead, that poverty bred something worse, anarchy.

Steve Dixon is a true class act PERIOD! If you have a issue with him take it up in person as he is not one to hide his opinion however he WILL listen to yours as well. I myself traveled to Italy and Mexico with Leib and the way the riders treated Leib after he made a decision to ride is that of a bunch of school kids in a gang situation!!! TOTAL BS and I can see why many view the euros with less respect. Just look at the picture of them clapping at Leib and Anstie a bunch of school children is what they acted like! A lot of people bitch about the lack of $$$ well if a bunch of school children can scream then cause this drama vs working with the promoter. Why should a company spend huge $$ in our sport?

I don't even consider Juarez when I say what I do anymore seeing that reports have numbers as high as 1 out of every 4 people fleeing the city. It's basically left no upper or middle class to speak of in Juarez.

Unfortunately it's not only Juarez anymore. It has spread into the interior of Mexico even in places like Monterrey, which is one of Mexico's wealthiest and most developed city's.

Simply you just can't trust the businessmen who once could guarantee your safety.

I don't understand why they'd consider it a good idea to have a race in Mexico at this time.

Because part of the YS ideology seems to be tapping into large and relatively uncharted markets, which is good for manufacturers and might hopefully benefit the sport as a whole.

If what happened to Leib is true, then that is absolutely disgusting! I wonder what MXMatti thinks of his hero's now?

I think Dubai, China etc are a great idea.

Mexico just not so much right now.

What GOOD came out of this weekends GP for our sport??????

A lot of people bitch about the lack of $$$ well if a bunch of school children can scream then cause this drama vs working with the promoter. Why should a company spend huge $$ in our sport?

Steve Dixon is a true class act PERIOD! If you have a issue with him take it up in person as he is not one to hide his opinion however he WILL listen to yours as well. I myself traveled to Italy and Mexico with Leib and the way the riders treated Leib after he made a decision to ride is that of a bunch of school kids in a gang situation!!! TOTAL BS and I can see why many view the euros with less respect. Just look at the picture of them clapping at Leib and Anstie a bunch of school children is what they acted like! Leib had several top guys try to take him out in the few laps he did in morning warm up sunday along with bltantly roosting him then looking back after then Anstie had a situation with MX1 rider spit on him!

a few facts:
-Leib was p11 in timed practice so if he sat out he would be gate 21-22 (the riders voicing there opinion would be 10-13 gate pick!

-He put his gear on then went down to the line to do a site lap, then we had specific talk of the track conditions and safety.

-His opinion is it was not the best track in the world however given the issues and risks he could ride it.

-How many guys did a site lap to see the track THEN made a decision to not start??? Half showed up in shorts and flip flops!

-He has had very little time on the yamaha and ANY amount of extra time would be good.

-He has no contract that pays him if he sits out! I asked Herlings himself after heat race if he still would get paid if he didnt race! His response... "YES!".... well folks some riders do NOT have that nice contract.

-The race was at high elevation and we chased jetting all weekend! So more seat time and changes would help.

-Now add to this the fact that the "riders uprising" was a total joke! Think of a pack of school kids running around just talking and talking. Was there a letter from a few top riders voicing there concerns to YouthStream that was signed by the other riders? NO! How about the riders that didnt ride coming to the press tent after to speak there opinion to the press? No! they had all packed up and pretty much left the track like a kid taking his ball home.

-Leib hit a back marker yes, he was pretty livid but at the same time did he go run his mouth off like a child? NO! He went to get the two dislocated fingers back in at medical and on the way Clement Desalle mouths off to him he got what was deserved! Pretty class act huh? Gets his fingers back in and still wants to go ride moto 2! A talk of reality and 30 min to think about things he makes the choice his Mexico GP is over.

If what happened to Leib is true, then that is absolutely disgusting! I wonder what MXMatti thinks of his hero's now?
Jamma10,

Think about a the fact the ONLY American racing in there series is treated like such! How many americans will watch the GP's now that not a single one is racing maybe??? If Zach and Leib are not racing does this help them as a series or hurt??

The end of the day the Riders showed they have the power to screw up a whole weekend and maybe even more down the road. point noted now how did they HELP the sport and safety??

Leib signed many posters and took pictures on sunday with tons of locals even after the drama! This in the end leaves a better impression for the series and sport he loves. We all had a shit weekend but how a person deals with it shows the true character.

Tortelli and the whole Youth Stream group need to get more credit than is being said. Tortelli could have easily gave up sat and left to go lick his wounds. I saw him at 7:30am sunday and asked how the night was? He looked exhausted and said he got 2 hours sleep. I know most of the YouthStream camp didnt get back to there hotel till after midnight as they where working on how to go forward on sunday.

As a sport people need to remember we are small and need to work together not fight with each other. I DO see the riders view and the track did have its issues but you need to do things correctly not how this weekend was.

Well, to sum it all up, it seems we had a relatively few classy professionals making the best of a difficult situation and an over abundance of punks.

When I was a kid way back in the 60's-70's, Motocross was a gladiator sport. It wasn't embellished, that was the most applicable description. After reading this crap I am sure that our beloved sport has been turned into a sport of... well I cant even comprehend what. Not not even ballet, those girls will perform on broken toes. In fact most collegiate women sports contain some bad ass girls that would sooner lose a limb than come off the field.

What I am saying is, this thread has got me riled up on what I consider the most demanding and most difficult sport there is today. From my interpretation I can only think of the age 50+ class desert racers. They go full tilt in blinding conditions on trails as wide as their tire which they can not see. They do this for sport. The pro class does the same only faster. Do they complain about dust? Lack of ambulance or the fact they are 75 miles from the closest clinic that can perform stitches? They ride to the conditions. Well to each their own.

I credit the guys that sacked up and raced. Injuries are part of the sport and so is attrition. Remember, even in the worst conditions, it's the same for nearly everyone. There are few that reap the angels and get clear vision, but to me that would make someone try even harder to get the holeshot to earn that reward.

They got threatened real bad by YS. One more thing on their account and they would be banned from the serie= can't fulfill their contracts and make any money. The reasons no one stepped up is very much that they remeber what happened to Pichon and Everts. I've heard it directly from Everets and Pichon so this is not BS!

Anstie is british and getting the same treatment, so the anti american thing is bullshit,

to be honest, spiting on it and telling someone they deserved to be hurt is going to far imo, but Steve Dixion himself talks about going on strike as an engineer, i bet they would have done much worse to any scabs that broke the picket line,

I bet this was not all about the dust in mexico, but just like in South Africa, and Las Vegas before that, where riders stood up together it is a show of strength and unity, its a shame that the slanging much take little note of that fact,

Matti Steve Dixon is a standup member of the paddock who built a successsful team from scratch through more than two decades of unbelievable sacrifice and graft. He provides several riders with a very good income not to mention an army of Mechanics. Yesterday Shaun decided of his own free will that he would sit it out and Michael decided he'd get on with the job in hand. Steve didnt pressure anyone. Like GuyB said - From what I hear Michael went out and did the sight lap, and while it was dusty, he considered it rideable...I was told it was like a normal day at a track in So. Cal., but with sandy corners.

You bang on about a return to the past with GPs well if you think that was unacceptably dusty on saturday you've got a very short memory of how GPs used to be.

How can anyone blame Michael for racing? The kid loves to race period. He doesn't have the luxury of the factory riders to pick and choose when to race. He is out there showing everyone that he deserves a factory ride. Hopefully he heals up quick.

That is why there will never be a riders union. Someone is always going to go against what others want.

From @Michael_Leib To all those giving me crap about racing yesterday, I raced because when it was all said and done Dixon wanted me to. I respect him. #Truth

DL says..." The decision to ride was 100% Michael's."

This is the second coming of the Alessi's.
Kid says something, then daddy spins it.

Drama seems to follow this family around. It can't always be the "other guy."

Before I said Michael should take the ride overseas. Now? He should stay here in the states. Here there are only a few guys who don't like him here.

Chief, I don't know you from squat, but I'm hoping you're attending every single GP you can get close to. MX/GP struggle from limited budgets, and that's partially the reason why things don't go as well as, oh, let's say an international soccer match or an NFL game. Money is resource for these events. And, the realistic way to improve "quality" is to push more money into the sport.

I had the unfortunate job of telling Steve Dixon that the bike that Zach Osborne was racing at the 2009 Southwick National (I think it was '09) was illegal -- it was next year's Yamaha and had not been homologated, and that little fact was missed in tech inspection.... Steve was not happy, but he was an absolute professional about it, he understood the situation and the rules, and even though he had traveled halfway around the world to help Zach at this one race, he was a good sport about the mix-up, and never once was he off the rails about the outcome.

I think what he did here -- allowing his riders to make their own choices and then standing behind them both -- is a reflection of his leadership and his passion for the sport and his team.

Again, that's why there will never a riders union. Riders can't get on the same page. Some riders will think working conditions are dangerous while others see it as a chance to get a good finish.

With him being a visitor to the series, he should of sided with the guys who make their living racing that series. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and not just what is best for ones self at the moment. Sure his team manager is happy he raced, but the manager isn't on the track. Someone will punt him in a coner if he continues on with the GP's

What's done is done, but this kids career is drama filled already.

Who are you Devin Davis with the "haters gonna hate?"

I think what he did here -- allowing his riders to make their own choices and then standing behind them both -- is a reflection of his leadership and his passion for the sport and his team.

From @Michael_Leib To all those giving me crap about racing yesterday, I raced because when it was all said and done Dixon wanted me to. I respect him. #Truth

Nowhere in there does it say it was Mikes descision.

" I raced because when it was all said and done Dixon wanted me to. I respect him."

Doesn't say that I raced because when it was said and done Dixon left it up to me. It says his manger wanted him to.

He has to live with it, but I wouldn't want to be him racing against the guys who called him out.
Don't think it matters anyway.

Mexico saturday practise (mxplanet.com shot)

Indeed and thats in practice. So imagine that there where riding 30 guys! But the organizers answered very mature! They put there water hose and they started putting water on the track so we got a mud race the first two heats!

Yeah the riders where called childish but the organizers answered pretty childish too if you ask me!
Riders: We don't like this track it's to dusty
Organizers: Ok! (If they don't like the dust they get bloody mud!!!!)
