I just caught it briefly on the show last night. Matthes said an industry person got in his face and threatened to kick his ass over something Matthes said he didn't even write. He's been threatened before.
This follows Weege saying a certain infamous moto Dad was ready to kick his ass over something he didn't write either....

This is BS. In no other legitimate sport would threatening and intimidation of journalists be tolerated. The Racer X management should be addressing this and sticking up for their star journalists.

In my limited experience around industry people- most of them were extremely cool. There is also a large element of self-important, douchebag, meatheads. They shouldn't be allowed to control the media with threatening of physical violence.

Mathes is a big boy, he can handle himself.

And Weege has backyard wrastlin skills,so Im not too worried about him either.

It is easy to say this behind a keyboard, but if I were in Matthes' or Weege's place I'd tell them to go ahead and take a swing. If you try and beat someone up at a SX or National then there is going to be someone around to see it and you are likely going to end up getting banned by the AMA or arrested. By turning the other cheek in a public situation you can make the guy threatening you look like the crazed maniac is probably is.

yep you will be the guy that got his ass kicked! Whoever does the ass kicking gets removed and in a month they are back. When they return they tell you it was no big deal and if you mess up again expect another ass kicking.

The answer is to be the ass kicker not the one getting kicked.

You really think that if an idiot tries to beat up a member of the media who isn't doing anything in the pro pits that the AMA will ever let them come back to a race?

Like I think Weege said some where.. what other pro sport would you have the athletes PARENTS calling you about your work?

Don't know if its possible with all the young guns involved, but would be great if one day, this sport grew some pubes.

Ben Townley threw a hissy fit a few years back just because some moto journalist didn't include Townelys name on a list of riders who he thought were a threat to win a championship.Blush

Why don`t they just write about it? It`s that simple. If he gets his ass kicked later the guy responsible shouldn`t be hard to find. Making things more transparant in this sport could get rid of most of the drama because they know it would get public if they act like adolescents. Instead they write about it without mentioning names which is IMO due to lack of cojones. If things will get public, people tend to act better. Right now the idiots have the power, they get away with it

The standard answer is "because the sport isn't big enough".

One asshole tells another asshole and another and before you know it, Matthes is essentially blacklisted and nobody will talk to him. That's the fear. I'm not saying that is what would happen. But I think Weege and Matthes are afraid it would. It's a shame.

absolutely the AMA is laughable when it comes to punishment especially if the offenders are big names.

In fairness, objecting to what someone wrote is not the same as getting up in his grill and threatening violence.

I agree that many are stupid drama queens but seriously when was the last time the AMA handed out REAL punishment in MX/SX?

I assume the person that publicly threatened him works for a certain company. it's a ghetto way to do business.

Wow. That's a surprising response. If someone walks up to you and pops you in the face over something you wrote on Vital, that would be cool, I guess. Carry on.

Neither of those rebel-rousers (or is it "rabble rousers"?) has mentioned to me that they have been threatened with physical violence over something they wrote, but I have threatened Matthes over stealing all of the Tim Ferry rookie cards out of my Hi-Fyers collection and Weege over whether or not John "Bon Jovi" is his favorite artist's real name or not.

Steve Hudson threatened to kick my ass over a ping-pong game gone bad at Kevin Windham's Party in the Pasture, but that's because I was taunted him about being crucified by my awesome drop serves....

I'm just kidding. Seriously, if one of those guys really was threatened and felt strong enough about it to bring it up, I am sure there would be some discussions with all parties involved.

You just jumped several levels...and made a load of assumption that was completely incorrect. Obviously there's a huge difference between someone threatening to do something, and actually doing it.

In legal terms, threatening someone with violence is assault. Carrying through with that threat with physical contact is battery. That's one of the reasons you can get a restraining order when someone threatens you.

500 fights, that's the number I figured when I was a kid. 500 street fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate tough guy. You need them for experience. To develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then, after, you realize that's what you are.

I think its funny that all this talk about the AMA or some promoter handling this stuff. First off threats don't mean anything. The person that publicly threatens a person is usually the one that will act last. This is the best part, this isn't a fantasy world of no laws just because they are in the motocross industry! The real world is if you hit someone you can have charges pressed against you and go to jail. If you continuously hit a person you can go to jail for longer its pretty cut and dry. Getting banned from the AMA shouldn't be the first thing on a persons mind when they swing at a guy, its going to jail and losing a lot of rights else where.
