I went out and bought my self a new 450 just so I can ride with my son. He laps me about every three laps but I still have fun out there with him. There is nothing better then to watch your kid blow by and hit a big jump and look back at you and then roost you. I have a smile from ear to ear the whole time I'm on the track with him.
Up until this year The last time I raced/rode a bike was 1981.

I remember when I realized I needed a bike too...when I pulled the restrictor plate out of the PW50. I told him to stay close so I could keep an eye on him. He immediately took off full throttle over the hill and out of sight!

Then they grow up, go to college and become KNOW-IT-ALL's Laughing ...still, you love them, and the memories from riding/racing are pricelessWink

My son is transitioning onto a 65. After quitting for a while, I got back on a bike to ride with him. Here are photos of myself and my daughter when she began and my son and I when he started. I hope he will always remember these times

Awesome post WhKnukckle!

I've often told my wife that if there's a heaven, I'll spend eternity chasing my kids around the track past the pearly gates. Its so great to finish a riding session with your kids, and sit down under the canopy on a hot summer weekend and talk about how great this section or that section of the track is. Nothing beats it.

Wow this thread is bringing back so many memories that i need to share a few pictures.

This was the first time i had ever experienced the amazing sounds and sweet two stroke smell of motocross. I had just arrived to the United States from Brasil and my dad went to check out the motocross scene here in the US. This was at the Hollister Hills motocross track.

This was us a couple years later after getting into the moto scene. Just like many of you have said, NOTHING can pay the memories i have of riding with my dad and all the instructions he gave me. That's what the sport is about, having fun with your loved ones. At least for me that's what it's all about.

Our father was the first one to get the bike and later same year he got us bikes. But being private veterinarian he can't risk getting hurt so he quit around 2000. He still has his 1989 KX500 that we rebuilt as surprise for his 60th birthday sitting in his living room, so maybe he'll takes it for spin someday. He's best advice so far has been, when he bought first new bike (1993 CR125) for me that I'm not allowed to sell it ever, only trade in for next bike. Here I am, almost 20 years and maybe ten bikes later, still riding and having fun with my CRF450.

This were it all started:
My fathers bike before the rebuilt (transmission broken ect.
KX50 after rebuilt:

Great subject!
I'm sorta in the same boat. Except I've been riding for years. My son is a 36 year old father that goes by me pretty quick these days.
I still enjoy the hell out of riding with him, even if it's only for a brief time as he blows by me. I used to be faster than him but that was so long ago I can't remember. lol
But the time we've spent together over the years is priceless. Now, he has a stepson who rides a 65 and a daughter about to start on a PW 50.
I too would encourage fathers to ride if you can. I doesn't matter how fast you are.
As someone said, just being out on the track with them is a blast.

And for you young dads who are riding with your kids, have fun and enjoy, you'll really cherish the memories as they get older.

Well said!!! I dont have a kid or anything yet, But Its annoying to watch a father and son come to the track with a 20ft enclosed and 40 thousand dollar plus truck with 2 85s and a golf cart in the trailer. GET A BIKE!!! You dont have to go fast, just ride around, keep it on two wheels, and have fun. Instead of sitting there yelling at your kid for blowing a berm in practice.

Great idea. My twin boys started riding about 3 years ago after my wife went out while I was at work and bought them bikes. I hauled them to the track every weekend and sat around watching them ride for about 6 months before i finally said enough with that. if I am going to be out there with them, I am going to ride with them. So at 49 years old I went and bought a used RMZ450 and rode for the first time in my life. I could never keep up with them, but they will occasionally hang with me for a few turns and rest before they take off again. There is nothing like really sharing the sport with them, while at the same time enjoying a little of your own competition against the other old men. It beats the heck out of swilling beer in the pits and yelling at your kids to man up and go faster.

Just so you all know, YOU SUCK!!

Had to close my office door so nobody would see the tears on my face as I am reading all these wonderful stories!!

So far I only get to ride in the yard with my oldest (Jeremy) on his PW50 and me with my youngest (Cody) in my lap on the TTR50. It's a great time following Jeremy around and watching him ride, getting a little faster and more comfortable each time and having Cody talk non-stop about riding while we're on the bike together!! Just want to keep riding more laps.....

Jeremy about 3 years ago....

Jeremy from last summer, BEFORE getting the safety gear. He needed the gear a few weeks later when he ran into the low wall along our driveway and bruised his knee reeaalllly good. Asked if he was more scared or hurt and he said hurt. We were just riding this past weekend.

I see lots of dads at racetracks watching their kids ride, which is great, and it's a terrific father/son time. But I spent Saturday chasing Steve around Rio Bravo, and I have to say to all those dads hanging on the fences - go buy a bike, get out there and ride with your son. There's nothing - NOTHING - like it. Go buy a used bike, get out there and ride. You might not be able to keep up if your son is going WFO, but catch him on warmup/cooldown laps, and just experience the sport with him, even if you're not going very fast (like me). I can keep up with Steve if he's riding 30 minute moto pace and I'm riding 6 lap pace, and just sitting right behind him for 6 laps and watching him ride is a transcendent experience. Neither of us are all that good, but it's all relative.

Don't just watch. Go ride WITH him. You'll be glad you did.
Maybe some of those dads on the fence gave up riding so that their son can experience it. Not everyone can afford bikes for the wholes family!

All in good time, bro. I remember the first time I took Steve around a motocross track, sitting on the tank of my KTM. The first time we went over a big jump (obviously just rolling along), he started howling and laughing. I knew right there that this is gonna be fun.

I hope it comes with time, trying not to push anything, just make it look interesting to both kids. I was catching a little air with Cody and a friend's kid this weekend over a little roller on my 450 and they were both digging it.

I miss all the fun days I got to spend with my dad at the track. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. I'm off at school right now and only go home every few weeks and there's hardly ever time to ride. But when we do get the occasional chance to go to the track my dad will opt out of riding in order to let me and my brother ride (my dad usually rides my bike); He just enjoys spending time with us and getting to go the track.

I have three daughters. Non ever rode. But my youngest played volleyball every year she was in school. I played for fun outdoors 2 on 2 grass and beach as well as some indoor. When she got around 14 she was pretty good and I finally got her to come out to play some outdoor 2 on 2 with me against the adults. We played really well together as a team. We started entering grass and beach tournaments during the summer for the next four years. I can tell you those were the happiest memories I have ever had. I can't explain what it feels like to be able to do some type of sport with your children. She is 25 now, married and has two kids. We talk about those times playing together and I can tell she really misses those times we had together playing and wish she would have do it more with me.

What ever the activity is, do it with your kids. They are only young once and the time goes by so fast. Enjoy it while you can.

My two boys are my crew. I wouldn't even consider going riding without them. I did have to kick down for a bigger trailer as they grow up and the bikes get bigger. I am waiting for the day my older one starts running the dozer and coming home to stupid stuff being built on the track.........................FWIW, I think that the parents who don't ride are worse about being "mini-parents" at the track. .........

I rode and raced a bit in my teens then got away from dirt bikes for about 35 years, my grandson's dad (our son inlaw) died in a car accident when he was 8 yrs. old. I was always very close to and spent alot of time with our grandson, him and I decided to get a couple of bikes to trail ride on, after about 7 mos. of alot of trail riding he decided he wanted to start racing, I had been away from dirt bike tracks for many years and thought here I go again, I'll never forget that first race, my nerves, the smell of race gas exhaust and all those memories came back to me of me and my Dad, i't's been 7 years now and a Honda 50, ktm50, 3 KTM 65's, a yz85, crf150r and now a 2010 crf250r, every time I would get somewhat relaxed with him at the track it was time to move up to a bigger bike, my wife and I sold our saltwater fishing boat, bought a motorhome and take him to tracks as much as possible, these last 7 years have been so much fun, emotional and a couple of trips to the hospital but what an experience for all of us.
