a 1 1/8" aluminum handlebar (braced or unbraced) will NEVER have the flex of a 7/8" aluminum handlebar. Don't think for a second that a braceless oversized bar has the flex of a 7/8" aluminum braced bar. That is not the case...not even close. If you want flex (or have bad wrists) use the Renthal 7/8" handlebar. If you want bars to last longer...use the oversized bars. Its that simple.I do have a little bit of experience and knowledge with handlebars. (more than a decade spent in the handlebar world)
Sure. right, what do you know.
LOL...not much FTE...but Handlebars is about the extent of it Smile What do you know about our legal system?

You could characterize the previous owners decision to cut the crossbar as being a little short-sighted. Remove it/them.

Thanks SND...this is one of the most frequently asked questions that people still ask me when discussing bike setup. Second only to, no big surprise, "what tire should I run?".

Has lead to some lengthy discussions...takes a few trips to the memory bank.

All I know is I just replaced a pair of 3 yr old Pro Tapers off my bike - just because they were so old, still perfectly straight just a little faded from the sun after numerous cartwheeling crashes. Has anyone ever seen a pair of bent ProTapers? I haven't. I've only heard of it.

An old thread but I just snaped a very low hour Renthal fat bar . Not a high speed crash just a nasty little high side.
I'm going back to the twinwall . I agree they don't offer the best comfort but I have never busted them.

Sorry to correct you, but I'm pretty sure (almost) that the Contours are the stronger of the two Pro Taper 1 1/8" bars. Stronger, but more rigid. You are correct about them being outsourced, although I'm not sure if it's China or where ever. The Evolution bars are not quite as strong, but they do flex more, close to the originals that came out in the early 90's. First time I saw them was Bradshaw at the DesNations in 90 or 91 I think.

Well, the Contours are the cheaper of the 2 if that's any indication of anything. The way I was told is that the Contours are made in China and the Evo's are made in Taiwan. I've been through probably 20 pairs of Pro Tapers since about 1994 and all I know is I never bent a set of the originals, I never bent a set of the Evo's, but I did bend a pair of the Contours on a rather small crash.
I realize this is an old thread, but I will say that I've noticed this exact same thing with the Countours and it's led me to become totally disgusted with the company. After going through 8 sets of Pro Taper Countour bars in the first 6 months of the year, wherein each bar would become bent downwards and slightly backwards on the left side (all from small tip overs), I emailed Pro Taper about the issue. I described what I had been experiencing and asked if there had been a change to the way they manufactured the bars that might be responsible for the issue and if so, were they doing anything to correct the problem. After 3 months, I still haven't heard a word back and obviously never will.

It's hard to remember exactly when I started having this problem, but it seems like it the problem started around mid 2015 I think, but it has become more pronounced and consistent as of late. Currently, I have a box of 17 Pro Taper bars that are all bent in the exact same way on the left hand side. In a lot of cases, the bars bent in pretty low speed tip-overs while trail riding in the mountains. At this point, I have tried 4 different Contour bends to see if perhaps the issue was somehow only related to my preferred bend, but I've had the same results with all 4 different bends. Thinking that the Evo bars might be stronger than the Contours, as indicated in Pro Taper's product literature, I tried to give them a go, but I was disappointed to find that they only offer a limited number of bend selections and my preferred bend is not on that list.

No need to make any comments about buying another brand because I have already done so. And I know that going through that many bars before making a change was my own fault but the misplaced and unwarranted brand loyalty I felt for Pro Taper led me to keep going back well after the point that I should have stopped. It's just a bummer that the quality of Pro Taper's staple product is not what it used to be.

I have never rated pro taper bars . Seen a few snp years ago . Renthal has always been my go to but now I have for the fist time snaped a fat bar at its smallest diameter thou , just past the clutch perch. Twinwall on the way.
