Not trying to stir the pot, well, maybe a little. Was it Roger? Or was it Cole Gress? Back when the Dung-ee was an amateur, I think it was still Gress who was the head honcho, at least in the amateur world. I really, really, really doubt that Roger went to more than a couple of amateur nationals during those years. Who put the bug in Rogers ear that that Dungey kid was the next big thing? Anyone, anyone.......?

Back in the day, up till 05' or so, I went to a ton of amateur nationals and followed it pretty close. Had a bunch of buddies who raced a lot of them (the dream was over for me by then) and a good friend who worked for Team Green Kawi for many years. Not one of them ever saw or heard of Roger being there. Ever. How do you find the next big thing if you arent' looking? Looking at a result sheet is one thing, but actually going to the races is another.

Not trying to downplay Roger in this topic, but I'm sure someone, somewhere, cringes when they say Roger found him.

Roger gave Dungey a chance in the pros, Gress had something to do with the amateur level I am sure. Dungeys loyalty is to The Man obviously.

I read in racer x that Ryan was out practicing at Glen Helen at the end of -05 after LL and that Roger was really impressed in what he saw in Dungey there, and they started talking at that point and thats when Roger started following him. If its true i dont know but that the official version i heard.

No he didn't..It was a guy named Tony that used to be a manager of a Suzuki team. I know this because Tony is a good friend of mine and Ryan stayed at his house a few times.

I read the same thing in an interview with Roger.
Dungey and his Dad just hung around the Zook pits,
asking the right questions, having the results and showing they're good people.

I don't think Roger has ever claimed that he found Dungey on his own...but someone had to make the call to offer him a ride.

I read an interview with dungey and he said " my dad and i were walking through the pits and my dad told me to walk up to roger and tell him that i look forward to riding for you " and that was the first time dungey ever talked to roger.

This..As i said earlier..Tony is the one that "found" him and brought him to Roger. Tony and RC met with Ryan at Comp Edge. to do some riding. RC was so impressed with Ryan's riding and the heart that Ryan had for racing he agreed that Roger had to sign him. Like i said before,Ryan stayed at Tonys house a few times and the day of the Comp Edge "try out" was one of those times. I met Ryan there that night.

I don't think they're talking about the first person to ever see that Ryan was fast on a bike but more the guy who thought he could be good at a pro level.

I read it somewhere (can't remember where, I'm old) that Ryan kept asking Roger what it would take to become a pro. This led to a session with RC, after which RC suggested Roger sign him immediately. If this isn't the way it happened, I probably dreamed it. How ever it happened, he sure made the best out of the opportunity.

Nope. I found him. 2004 Village Creek Pro Circuit regional round 5. Told him he should go pro.

All joking aside he's a good guy. I had crashed earlier in practice and while in staging with me in 4 stroke open (he had a 04 rmz 250 and I had it's counterpart kx250f) he noticed my silencer looked bent. I thought nothing of it and brushed it off but he was right. Just thinking back on it... he was a maybe 14-15 year old kid who had travelled from Minnesota to Texas of all places for a one off race and he had the generosity to tell me something on my bike was out of place and odd looking. He had already been picked up by Suzuki at that point and was well on his way to being what we know now. Went 1-2 to Sean Hackley's 5-1. Their careers have gone in different directions since those days though.

After LL Dungey was invited, along with several other potentials, to a type of scouting ride day for team Suzuki. Roger said that he chose Dungey for the team because of his corner speed and his attitude. Dungey was super pumped about the selection.

I hear you on the Sean Hackley part. I was at ponca city in 06 and he and Hackley were battling tooth and nail, but I just had a feeling that Dungey would have more success as a pro, he was buttery smooth at that speed while Hackley was all over the place, but I didn't think he would fall off the map like he did. I think Ponca 06 was Canard's breakout ride as well, wasn't it? Won 125B when it was still called the 125 class. I remember lots of people that are pros now that were there, or people I thought would have had a bigger impact, Blake and Tyler Wharton, Ben Evans, Jarred Browne, lots more I'm still thinking of.

That's exactly what Lewis Hamilton did with the boss man at Mclaren when he was younger, he talked about it in a documentary about him a while ago. I might just go to my boss on Monday and tell him I look forward to a promotion of some sort
