What if said contractor, driving a Dodge, had Mercedes and Dianna in the back of the truck and he allowed you to fondle their boobies while he worked on your house? What then?

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but two of my friends have had Dodge 2500's with the Cummins diesel for over 5 years and neither of them have had a single problem. We've towed trailers down to Baja a gazillion times, to Idaho for races, etc... One of my buddies has used it as a daily driver the entire time. Those things have been all over the place. Never a single problem. Those trucks are bullet proof.

My Dad used to shit on Ford's my entire life, until his employer switched to Fords and he was forced to drive one and realized that they're not the same Ford truck from the 70s. You old folks need to stop living in the past Smile

As a Ford owner myself I must agree, especially the 5.9 Cummins. Other than a lift pump here or there there was nothing wrong with those motors. My 2005 F350 6.0 diesel has had two EGR coolers replaced, and it only has 35K miles on it! Nothing else has gone wrong but DAMN. Heading out to Parker AZ in a few days and I think I'll throw my ZX12R in the back, just in case.

You are driving a FIAT. You might as well get a scarf and one of those totes hats that snobby college professors wear so you can look the part while putting around town.

It's not a scarf, it's an ascot, or a cravat.

Dodge was having emissions problems for a few years as well. The 5.9 is great, but all of the manufacturers are struggling with the current emissions rules. It's killed fuel mileage and really boosted the aftermarket programmer business.

Struggling? My 2009 6.7 Cummins has worked flawlessly for going on 3 years now and pulls like a beast.

20-21 highway dry @ 65 mph - 15-16 loaded heavy

Besides, I didnt buy it to get good mileage, I bought it so I could hook on to a big trailer fulla cattle or a backhoe/tractors and tow it with ease. Which it does just fine. Before this thing I had a one ton Chevy gasser which sucked, got 9-10 mpg and whined and bitched just pulling my 24' enclosed trailer & sprint car. The Cummins doesnt give a shit what you put back there, it will step off with it like its nothing.

That's unusual. I know several people that own those engines. They love them, but after 2006 (or whenever they added the low sulfur regen stuff), with the new emissions controls, the mileage dropped like a rock. Before that, 20+ was common. After 13-15.

Buddy of mine just chipped his 2011 and bypassed the EGR (I think it is) and straight piped the exhaust or something like that. Bumped his 3500 up to about 16 MPG.

Have you done any mods to it, or is that stock?

No mods/tuners. No unplugging the EGR. 3.73 gears. Keep your foot out of it and it does just fine. Too many guys try to drive these things like a sports car, you will kill the mileage doing that sooting up the DPF fast causing it to regen often. (which helps kills mileage too) Watch guys who drive a 5.9 easy and see how much soot they are throwing, and watch the stupid kids who hammer the throttle and see how much coal/soot they throw about the back.

If he changed that stuff he voided his warranty. Especially if he dinked with the EGR or pulled the DPF off.

It's a father son I know that are having hell with the emissions. Son got rid of his 3/4 ton 2008 due to emissions issues. Father is having hell with the emissions--in the shop regularly on an '09--but he refuses to trade in. Both drive like old men. Mileage is down. They've owned 6 Dodges since I've know them (5x3/4 ton, 1x1 ton). Not sure if the old 4x4 is a 5.9l engine, but I think it is. The others are/were.

The other is a cow-orker driving a 2011 that modded his truck. He loves the chip in his 3500.

Another father/son I know. Dad gave his son the older Dodge and bought new. Mileage down, power down on the new one. Both 1 ton.

Your experience is unique (in my experience lol).

I know the first versions of the 6.7 had issues with the ECM getting the DPF, EGR and all that working together right. (07 and 08) But you are gonna have growing pains with any new crap like that. Hell I applaud Chrysler for tackling the whole emissions issue ahead of the time and trying to get a stable system out there before the deadline and without a urea tank. There are plenty of horror stories about the early Ford/Chevy emissions systems also. I havent seen or heard (first hand) a single issue with a >=2009 Cummins.

Oh, one other point, the mileage stuff is VERY contingent upon RPM in the 6.7 Cummins. If you keep it on cruise at 65mph with 3.73s you will do okay, just another 5mph faster it drops off, and get over 75mph and it tanks bigtime. Those 3500s with the 4.10s will spin the engine even more.

And this is what you initially responded to:

So, it appears we agree...

Although, I do know of a '09 having emissions issues as mentioned above...and I said 5.9, meant 6.7. doh!
