I think that the competition just caught up to JS, so to speak. JS was out of action for an extended time, RV, RD both gained speed and endurance, CR stepped up his game, TC came along, and everybody is going JS's warp speed. I don't think JS is going any slower, just everybody got faster. JGR has DM's bike working pretty good for him, but JS has of course a little more speed, along with a certain riding style. The bike has to be set up for each rider's style. They (JGR) does not have a huge data base for somebody of JS caliber. Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, have basically have the last 3 years of data. KTM has had to start almost from scratch with RD and the new 450. They still don't have it dialed in either. JS isn't as conservative as RD, so when you push it, things happen. Most teams test with thermocouples on the bike, so if the shock was overheating, they would know it. They have been doing that for years. I just think JS is trying to comeback at a time where he has equals now, and a new bike, team, conditioning, etc. I still think he has the speed, he just needs to use his head a little more, I'm sure it's very frustrating for JS and JGR. I do think if he does not get hurt, he'll get faster as the season progresses. Can he win the title, good question? I do think the bike can win, set up properly.

Have you put powerbands on yours though? I bet you have, maybe they need to put 1 on,even 2 if they'll fit Blink

I'm not saying it's the best bike but Brayton isn't doing that much better on Honda than he was on the JGR.

In all honesty I think the bike has a big part in all of this, but some of it is also on rider error. We all know James is fast enough to win. if the bike is holding him up then he needs to show it/prove it.

I would rather him finish in 3rd every weekend consistently than continue crashing one week and winning then next. Just race and stay up James. I don't think he should push the bike to the limit, if it puts him on the ground.

OK I am gonna ask this question for the last time! Why does he kill everyone in his heat race? Thats right the Yamaha is only good for 8 laps! Let's just face it James is the "heat race hero" Ok seriously James will start winning races starting this weekend because RV doesn't have to beat James to win the title....Back on topic Yes I am tired of everyone blaming the bike. But you have to admit James has never looked as good as he has on the Kaw.

A few years ago MA was on the Katoom and everyone was saying that half way through the motos he would drop anchor. About half way through the season they said they figured out the shock was over heating. They changed the shock with some new fangled shock and all of a sudden he was running up front the whole moto. JGR builds their own shock, maybe something similar when the shock gets warm? Who knows but for sure that's not the results we expect from James.
I have 2 shocks that overheat. 1 overheats, locks up until it cools, then works fine. The other gets hot and just gets really stiff. Can you tell me who can fix this problem? I just get a deer in the headlights look when I explain my problem. Like I'm telling a fish story or worse.

Has anyone entertained the thought that regardless of the amount of resources JGR has, there may be a possibility that they do not know everything there is to know about SX/MX? Combined with a rider who is notoriously bad at providing quality feedback, there could be a disconnect? I do not believe that the bike is the entire reason why JS is not winning, but it certainly seems to be a part of the reason. I maintain that the largest reason for JS lack of success of late is mental not metal.

I loled a little. He couldn`t even win consistently on a 2011 Kawi. Wasn`t 2011 Kawi an excuse for a first part of outdoors?

Regardless of whether it's the bike, injuries, confidence, or a combination of all the above, it seems pretty clear to those who have been watching him over the years that something is off. He just doesn't seem to have that killer instinct and aggression this year. At the end of the day, whether it's adjustments to the bike, or himself, I hope for the fans' sake he's able to get it back.

Fun fact: from June 2010 thru May 2011, the Yamaha YZ450F had over 2,300 registrations in the Off-Highway Motorcycle segment for the U.S. That's WAY out in front over the CRF50F in second with 1,703 and the CRF450R in third with 1,683. Almost hard to believe when the Yamaha 450 is so widely criticized and panned.

Nobody knows that. Some great riders couldn't make other brands win a title (MC on the Suzi, for instance). About the only safe bet (in recent memory) would be RC...seemed like the bike never mattered to him. I'd bet Reed would do pretty good on it, too.

Unfortunately, Stew hasn't always been the most consistent to stay upright, and it seems to have gotten worse since LB departed.

I wish some on here would just understand that the new Yamaha design would be more than sufficient for 99.9% of the human race but for some reason James has not and probably will not adjust to this bike. He is the .1%! He knows it, we know it and JGR knows it but he's stuck for the time being. Yes, for James, it';s the bike. He would be getting better results and having more fun on yellow, green or red. Period. It's true. Don't mean to offend any Yamaha loyalist because it is a great bike. Just not working for James Stewart.

Does James ever practice away from the Stewart compound? The dirt here looks really nice and tacky. Personally I think he looks OK on the softer terrain tracks but struggles on the hard pack. I believe that Davi has also recently expressed front end grip concerns. Maybe this is what caught James off guard.

Because the heats are shorter. He seems to be crashing about 1 time per main, so 1 time every 20 laps. A heat is 8 laps, so he has a good shot at not falling.

Think of it like this: If you hop in your car and drive 8 miles, you have very little chance of being in an accident. If you hop in your car and drive 20 miles, you increase your chances of being in an accident by 2.5 times.

I do think there's more too it. I believe the bike isn't working exactly like he wants & for 8 laps he can deal with it. Over the course of 20 laps I think it screws with his head.

Also, Stewart is a guy that isn't satisfied unless he's at the front. In the main, you combine all the top riders vs. half as many in the heat. So, Stewart has to push harder because there's a greater chance of getting beat in the main.

That is sort of what the top pros that have ridden it have said, it is not very forgiving and you have to be perfect at all times. Its a bummer cause he use to be as fun to watch as RV is. Even if he was on another bike I don't think he would be as consistent as RV is though. JMO

Apparently you haven't noticed that JGR likes to build a bike that will be perfect for practice and will help their rider set the fastest lap time numerous times in qualifying, but come only main event time it will be the biggest POS on the line.

One lap in practice isn't 20 laps in the Main. Look at what changing frames did for RV last year outdoors. He could ride one moto fine, but he was getting so beat up that he couldn't run two motos strong. I never would have thought that a bike could make a bike and rider that much better. There may be some truth in all that is being said about the bike and the setup. Also, Even though James has won heats he didn't always look strong and got out front early while the other top guys in the heat had to play catchup.

Agree, the bike isn't the main issue and it gets really old people making the excuses. It may not be perfect, but none of the bikes are perfect every week. JS is still consistently smoking the same riders he used to smoke back 3-4 years ago when he was the claimed FMOTP. Since he crashed himself out of a few SX series, didn't ride any outdoor series, and turned his focus to TV shows, the landscape of the competition changed. JS is still consistently beating KW, Brayton, Wey, Chisholm, Milsaps, Shorty, Alessi, etc on a week to week basis even after crashes and bad starts - look where he stands in points compared to all of them. But the riders at the top like Dungey, Reed, RV, and Canard (poor guy) are just as fast now when they push it to the edge. Bottom line is, competition is better and JS lost some of his edge while on the sidelines for various reasons. Hell, if anyone has a REAL legit bitch and beef about their bike, it's Dungey. He's much further behind the curve than JGR and JS7, but you don't hear any complaints from him or their team. But yet, how much is being said by the "industry experts" about that? Some, yes but not nearly as much as the stories about JS7. Some people just can't wrap their head around the realization that their favorite rider isn't what he once was compared to the competition. Increased competition, lack of racing action, tons of distractions, tons of injuries and dirt samples (hell that adds up, gotta admit), GETTING OLDER, etc. It all compounds to make a rider be not what they once were. I fully expect RV, RD, TC, and Reed to all eventually lose their edge unless they decide to retire on top first. Shoot, I hope this last injury to Reed doesn't do it for him. I LOVE the great competition. I just hate it when people make excuses for lack of performance - for ANY rider. Some weeks James gets a good start and rides incredible = win, some weeks he gets a bad start and crashes trying to fly through the pack and get on top of the podium = 4th place or something. He's very fast in practice, he's very fast in heats, and he has one main win under his belt in which no one could touch him. How anyone could continue to blame the majority of JS7's problems on the bike and not simply look at the rider at least as an equal if not the majority of the problem is beyond me.

I am so tired of reading on here how the JGR bike is so bad and that is why Stewart isn't winning. Please just stop. It's getting so old.
Haha! So true.. What I get sick off, is the constant bike updates:

Pre race: "Yeah, my bikes dialled. We got it all sorted over the off season and it's perfect... Great tyre (tire) selection, Pirelli really helped me. All the guys at JGR have this thing spot on."

Post race: "We found out a few new things about the bike and we're going to work on them for next time.."

It's literally like the YZF 450 is a game of cluedo or some sh*t. Every week they find this 'new' discovery. I understand, you can make changes to everything and anything on the bike. But it's been like 3 years Bubba has had this bike and in those 3 years, he's still struggling with set-up.. Haha! No way. It was a laughing matter last year, but with the work JGR have put into the thing, along with the added development time etc, there is only one factor that is wrong..

The operator of the machine. No buts or doubts.

I Dont know why, but many people in these kind of forums seem to have some kind of hate against the brand Yamaha ! Why is that ?

Is it because Yamaha used to dominate in the late 90's and early 2000. Is it because they came out with hyped revulsionary design in 2010...or what is it ?

Totally agree. The above is what I think is happening and the talk about the bike is only a small issue that any competent team could make work. If JGR are as good as everyone says, then bike set up should not be the problem.
