If this is in the wrong section move it please.

I'm finally in the position to buy a new (used) bike. I'm set on a 250 2 stroke. There's 3 in my area right now.

First is a 2000 YZ 250. Guy is asking 1800 obo. It's in pretty dang good shape for a 12 year old bike, and only has a pipe added to it.

Second is a 2002 KX 250. 1500 obo. He said he just put a fresh topend in it. All stock except for the plastics. Not too rough but not as well taken care of as the YZ.

Third is a 2004 KX 250. 1800 firm. Bone stock.

I've always had good luck with Yamaha, but I've never owned a Kawi. Any insight from you guys would be awesome Smile braaaap!

If I had to choose one of the those then definitely the 04 kawi if in good condition. The YZ is too expensive...

What your price range? For not that much more u can buy a lot better bike. I would try to get a RM or YZ

You can get 04-06 RM/YZ 250's for only $2000-$2500 in Socal. Unless you r 18 and younger, a couple hundred more is nonething and u get a much better bike that also needs less work.

IMO almost all used bikes, u should/need to buy:
-new tires
-chain/sprocket
-bars/grips
-topend
-air filter/spark plug
-Service/clean/gease everything else

Looks like two stroke prices are increasing. Anyways here's the kind of bike u should get:

The Yamaha is actually a pretty safe bet.

If you can tell that it's been well taken care of, that means a LOT...

Plus, Yamaha's are generally of a very high quality at the basic level, things like the quality of the alloys used and all of that.

The 2000 YZ's have solid geometry and are a good platform.

I wouldn't doubt to go for the 04 KX. Maybe the YZ is as good, and you can get it cheaper, but it feels like a bike from the past while the KX is something people still race on and its Kawasaki's last smoker...

Go for the 04kx for sure. I had the 02 kx and loved the powerband, real linear for a 2-stroke, the 04 would be much better since they did a frame re-design and lots of other tweeks between 02 and that 04 model. I just picked up an 05 YZ250 AL frame for 2k. I'd suggest waitng for something like that or an 04 and up RM250. Kawasaki did even more frame changes to the newer KX's so the later the model the better if not roached.

Come down to TX and buy my '05 YZ250 from me for $2000. It's super clean, only really rode it during 2006 and then put it away and has been ridden at a track once in the last 3 years. It has a full PC suspension rebuild valved for a 160lb int mx rider that has only been ridden once.

I'm also selling a 98 KX250 for $700 and a 96 KX 250 that was hardly ever used (still has the stock tires on it and they aren't bad) for $800. If you took the extra money and put it into either of these bikes for some new graphics, plastic, tires, top end, etc, you would have a pretty nice ride.

I just left Dallas yesterday man! I really only have $1500 anyway. Junior year of college, not much income at the moment.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try to talk the guy with the 04 Kawi down a few hundred bucks. Seems like the general consensus in this thread is the newer the better, and honestly the bike is in great shape.

When buying used if you can't tell immediately that one bike has serious issues going 4 years newer is a pretty safe bet. Obviously you aren't planning on contesting the nationals with this bike so reliability and rideability are the primary concerns. If you show up with 1500 the guy may take it, even if not 1800 is a pretty good price on the bike. If you really only have 1500 be prepared to miss some ride days until funds materialize because the chances of you picking up a decade old bike with nothing you need to fix is not super high.

IMO if u only have $1500 don't buy a bike right now. Do u have a part time job or mommy paying your way?

If u are just dying to ride something pick up a pitbike and hit the tracks. I just bought a 03 honda xr100 in awesome condition for only $700. My brother has the same bike, its been the most fun I have had in a long time! Pitbike racing is cheap too!

We can't all be rich and live in Huntingtion Beach like some people on here. I suppose you won't own a car unless it's a Ferrari, won't buy a house unless it's a mansion, and won't pull a chick w/o big tits and a supermodel. I'm sure you wake up and piss excellence from the tip of your golden dick too huh? I'm surprised you didn't tell him to take that $1500 and use it for a down payment on some new model 4 stroke.

Seems to me like you're salty because maybe you never had the oppurtunity to attend college, or a parent(s) that sacrificed their own living to provide you a better life and some toys.

hahahha I am 20 years old. Drive a 89 toyota pickup that I rebuilt the engine and have $1500 total into it. Before that had a ford escort for $2200. Ride a 07 RM250 that I bought new in 2010 for $4800 cash. Before that had two 125's that I paid $2k each for. Just bought the xr100 for $700. Have a 67 chevelle that I have been restore since the age of 13 and its still not done..... Yes I had to pay my way through college so I only did one year. Still live w/ the parents but pay all my bills and still able to save $5k in the bank right now. Plan on moving out and finishing the chevelle in 2-3 years.

Definitely living the rich socal life.....lol alrighty I done giving advice.

I live on my own, go to college full time, and work part time. My 'mommy' hasn't given me money since the day I turned 16. $1500 is my limit since Ill still need to put some money into the bike once I buy it and I still have bills to take care of.

Thanks for the advice on the smaller bikes but I'm 6'3 and they're too cramped for me. My first bike was a honda xr100!

So you pay your iPhone bill and dump all your part time job money into dirt bikes and restoring a chevelle? Nice priorities...
