Anothet band that didn't get due credit was The Darkness. Huge in the UK, but only limited success here. Cool to see Justin Hawkins in a Superbowl commercial though, and the band is back together and releasing a new album around March. They do cheesy 80s metal to perfection, but most people don't get that it is totally tongue in cheek. If you actually read their lyrics, they are pure comic genius. Very heavy Queen influence too - probably more than any other band I've heard. If you take them at face value, you aren't anywhere near realizing "The Darkness experience." It drives me crazy when I talk to someone who has heard them but totally doesn't get what they are about. Makes me want to grab a lyrics sheet and do an intervention. When I'm listening to them I don't just enjoy the music, I sit there thinking, "This is sheer fucking brilliance."

I'm fairly certain that I am going to regret this but what the hell......I am a put your money where your mouth is kinda guy.
I was honestly surprised this band didn't do better but the whole Seattle thing happened and all the record deals went west again....lol.

Here is a great film about a band that "should have been bigger". A little painful to watch but good none the less.

I've seen that Anvil documentary, its pretty sad when they play that little club in, is it Belgium? to about 8 people. Perfect demonstration of what a bitch the music business can be.

Volbeat! They're slowly gaining more recognition in the US, but they aren't nearly as well-known here as in Europe. I've seen them live twice, they are awesome!

Bit of an obscure one this. I spent 5 months in Australia at the end of a world trip back in 2003/4 and while living in Perth an Aussie girl copied a load of random albums onto my i-pod for me. I was flying home a few weeks later and flicking through my i-pod on the plane when I came across a band called Page Eleven that this girl must have copied for me, and I couldn't get enough of them.

Anyway, got home and tried to find out about them and the only reference I could ever find for them was this website below. Its as if they fell off the face of the planet, but if you listen to some of the mp3's - and bear in mind they were only 21 when they recorded this stuff - its surprising nothing came of them. At least I think it is anyway.

They have a kind of haunting sound, a bit like the cure in a funny way, but much heavier and raw.

If any Aussies read this and know who Im talking about I would love to know what happened to them.

My brother took me to see the Melvins in Baltimore a couple years back. Two drummers pounding away like madmen, Buzzo just unleashing something out of prog rock nightmare on the guitar. They completely kicked ass. So unknown, but so influential.

I have been thinking of these two threads on the trip from KC to STL while listening to music. I find it hard to believe that the whole punk rock genre didnt get absolutely HUGE. I am way biased on this but think about it, short songs, huge hooks, sing a longs, angst for the dudes, melody for the chicks and throw in some humor and it rules. How do people not like this stuff??

Primus. Why? Because Les Claypool is a genius.

I get to see them May 6 here in the ATL with Shinedown, Five Finger Death Punch, Chevelle, Adelitas Way and The Art of Dying.

As for me, a band that I couldn't believe was bigger was Flickerstick. They won the show Bands on the Run back in the 99 or 2000 on VH1.

I was chatting to someone in a pub on saturday who saw them support Thin Lizzy the previous night night and he was also very impressed.

The Black Keys have suddenly broken through into the mainstream over here (after sitting on the periphery for about 5 years) and I reckon the popularity of other 'riff heavy' bands like Clutch could start to rise soon.
Check out this album by them.. My fav..
