Multi-time AMA motocross and supercross champion-turned NASCAR driver Ricky Carmichael says he is uncertain of his plans for 2012, after sponsor Monster Energy elected to back brothers Kyle and Kurt Busch in a new NASCAR Nationwide Series effort. In an exclusive interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's SiriusXM Speedway with Dave Moody, Carmichael said he initially was assured the Monster Energy sponsorship would remain with him in 2012, and that the 20 NASCAR Nationwide Series races announced yesterday for Kurt Busch were supposed to be his. "I had a handshake with the CEO of Monster Energy," revealed Carmichael. "But the weekend of Texas (Motor Speedway), it went away. We were good to go, but when Kyle had his issue (at Texas), it all went sideways." Carmichael said he believes his shot at retaining the Monster Energy sponsorship disappeared for good when Kurt Busch parted company with Penske Racing after the conclusion of the 2011 campaign. Gradually, Carmichael said he realized KBM was not the right place for him. Carmichael said he feared his image would suffer from signing with Busch, adding, "I had a feeling that if I went there, I would lose fans. I was afraid people would say, `I used to like Ricky Carmichael, but now I don't because he races for Kyle.' I felt it wasn't right for me. I need everything to be positive, and nothing negative. "I have no disrespect for Kyle Busch," insisted Carmichael. "He's a heck of a driver and he's going to win a lot of races. I haven't really come close to winning in NASCAR, so I've got no leg to stand on. I can't complain about the decision. (Kyle and I) just have a different way of racing."

The dude crashes way too much. Which is why he got the boot from a few teams.

Im just wondering why Monster did that to him? There has to be another reason.

Its a no brainer for Monster. Do you want someone who can win right now, or do you want someone who can't? Monster did the right thing from a business point of view.

I understand it from the Nascar side. Carmichael wont ever draw the fans Busch will.

But as a personal sponsor how do you justify it?

Thats what I dont get.

While I appreciate all of the money they pour into this sport, I lose some respect for Monster if this is true. I understand business is business, but that doesn't always mean shady business. Hopefully RC lands on his feet.

Really...........There is a very good reason both of the Busch Bros are starting over this year(sponsors/team). They are the biggest BITCHES in Napcar, bar none. M & M's droped Kyle and bascially told JGR, either he goes or we go. Kurt Busch did not WOW Miler Lite or Penske, he is completely disrespectful to his team(crew chief, pit crew etc). Kyle runs his car into a competitor on pit road after a race but is too chicken shit to get out of the car and face the man he hit. Both of these guys are pussy ass bitches and you wonder why RC doesn't want anything to do with them?????? RC has his own money, morals, his own legacy and future, he doesn't need to risk that by getting in bed with Kurt or Kyle. I'm not even close to being rich and I wouldn't want to work for or with either of them. Career wise, he can afford to sit out a year and come back with new sponsors/team and still be relevant in NASCAR, him and Harvick(KHI) are tight, he's not worried IMO.

Same company that sued a small Mom and Pop brewery in Vermont for making a beer called "Vermonster" which is a name that has been used for ages and long before this toilet water was ever created. It could be a precurser into the funneling of support from SXMX to NASCAR because it is just a better business move especially when exposure is considered? I suspect Red Bull will then pick back up where it left off before being pushed out of the sport of SX. Who knows.

so why isnt anyone bitching about monster promoting nascar when nascar has this HUGE market and not advertising for MX. RC is the perfect segway. Want to build a market? combine the two right? maybe they figure their Bro friends dont watch nascar? monster is sold nationwide?

Monster markets plenty for ALL action sports, not advertising MX............ummmm the SX series, they are the title sponsor, plus the MEC. Genius plan going after 2 of the most talked about drivers in Nascar, they both are younger, they fit the target demographic and they both can wheel the hell out of a race car, it will take less than 5 races for one of them to be in the winners circle, you watch.

Really? This is nascar not mx, and Ricky doesn't know how to set up a car, the Busch brothers do, just look at there success. Nascar is a sport where the saying is "if you're not cheating, you're not trying", it's all about the car and set up and knowing what the car needs to do, and Ricky needs that in his corner, i'am a huge RC fan in mx/sx but in nascar he sucks, period, And who would stop being a fan of RC if he drove for the Busch bros? He couldn't win in the truck series, he will go nowhere in NNS or NSC.

I didn't say it wasn't a bullshit company, I said I appreciate the money they pour into the sport. I respected them even more for backing RC into his 4 wheel days... and now thats gone. I would never have been brotastic enough to wear a flat billed Monster hat, but I figured they would stick with him to the big show.

No arguement there, BUT, Harvick can set up a car/truck as well and that was his team owner. I'm saying RC wanted to distance himself from KBM because of their on track behavior and off track reputation, not because they suck at driving, cuz they don't. He will land on his feet again in nascar.

I feel like I played a huge (role) in bringing Monster to NASCAR in the first place. They gave me the money and said, `Go find your best NASCAR deal.’ We won two or three Supercross titles together, and two or three outdoor championships. They gave me some awesome opportunities over the years. I have nothing bad to say about them, they’ve been behind me 100% and always will be.”

I did not see the entire quote, so clearly I was in error when suggestion an apology to the Monster team. I do believe he owes Rodney an apology as he implies that Rodney backed up on a handshake deal. Where I come from a man's word is his bond. So which is it: did Rodney lie when giving his word and handshake OR has Monster always supported him "100 percent"? Because at the end of the day Monster = Rodney Sacks. BTW, RC is the GOAT, but certain of his comments were poorly chosen. I know Sacks, and he is no liar. As a Judge, I was always looking for the "third story", as that is where the truth can usually be found.

Ricky's making all the right moves to suit his life, and has thus far. I'm sure he appreciates all of your input as caring fans, but the man is no dummy.

Someone mentioned Kevin Harvick for next year. Kevin closed up shop last year. His stuff is second to none & certainly a wise choice for Ricky, as I'm sure he's aware of, but without sponsor dollars, no one can afford to go racing.

Besides, it's always better to go racing with someone elses money!
