To me it seems like printing directly onto a foam block would be easy these days and would eliminate the possibility of a cover coming off into someones wheel.

What do you all think?

The banner material the covers are made from is the issue. The material inherintaley does not rip or tear easily, and is the reason they are gathering up in riders bike. Ideally they should move to a expanded crosslinked microcellullar polyethylene foam. This type of material is ultra light in weight, ridgid enough to matian a full body look that the advertisers are looking for, and printable as well.

This material could be wrapped around a tough bolck and held in place with something as small as a sewing needle if so desired. Even in 1/8 to 3/16 thnkness's the material would stil have a very readable full body appearance. The best advantage is with it's light weight and porr tensile strength, is if were to sperate from its substrate it would still maintain most of its rigidity and deflect off a bike. If it were to somehow to find its way into the spokes or sprokets the material would desinergrate with in seconds. Best of all the material would be comparative if not less than the material currently being used.

This is an advertising issue, so a solution has to come down to what will work towards the safety of the riders while still offering the advertisers an attractive package.

Since it's the sponsors that want the covers to be seen, it would seem reasonable for them to cover the cost of new, safer covers. I would think a tube cover, open on one end, think of a pillow cover, with a bungee at the opening to keep them tight would be easy to install and when placed with the open end away from the direction of travel, would keep them from being pulled off.

In tight turns a special tuff block is not needed, in my opinion.

Instead, stacking the blocks to shoulder height would keep riders from hooking them with their pegs, as they lean in for the turn their shoulders would be against the blocks. The extra height would allow bigger ad space and if cover was made to go over 3 blocks it would secure the blocks together so they wouldn’t easily fall over.

The viewing public might complain for a while because of the reduced visibility in these turns but they would adapt and tv camera crews would find ways to set up that would minimize the restrictions.

One more thing to add;
If you feel passionate about getting these changed, why not send Feld an email offering your thoughts about the safety of the tuff block covers and offer them a solution.

I agree. I think this could be a great solution.

Great safety measure, but, wouldn't it impact visibility of the racing.

If they were just shoulder height I think it would be ok. I don't think it would bother the riders, and the fans would all be up high enough in the stands (since they block off all the lowest seating anyway), that it wouldn't be a bother for them either. I'm only talking about the blocks in the inside of tight corners for these 'alternate' block options...I know, it is possible to pick up a bail cover in a strait, but that isn't typical. Most of the time, its in the corners that the problems is the worst.

Here's an idea, but hey, just a thought:

You ever own a boat? You know the keychain floaty thing that the dealer hands you when you take possession (usually anyway). It's a very shiny, slick piece of cushy foam, printed in very bright, hi res color with a logo on it. I feel that this would be a perfect material for a tough block. They are very durable, don't fade and are hard to scratch.

I think that you could direct injection mold them with a hollow core and they could last an entire season.

I might get them quoted and forward it to Feld. You could probably buy three sets for less than the cost of the hors d'oeuvre's at the supercross finale party.

That's actually a pretty good idea but I suspect it would be very expensive

If the guys riding the track were concerned about the tough block covers they could all just protest and not ride til they fixed them , nobody cares what an internet forum has to say about them . That is the reality of the sitution.

Hmmm, this is what I am concerned about, lets assume that the tuff blocks are roughly 1 foot high, if you stack them three high and then were in the stands and wanted to see ground at a distance of 3 feet from the tough block, you would have to be sitting at an angle of 45 degrees from ground level. To see ground at 6 feet, the angle reduces to about 27 degree. Seems these viewing angles would be pretty obstructive to stack the tuff blocks too high.

When Jeremy Buel launch his KX250 into the cheap seats after flying off the berm following the catapult at Will Rogers Arena in Ft. Worth in 2000, the next weekend, they made us put these huge nets on poles around the entire bowl turn. It worked but was very obstructive. When that didn't work out, the next weekend they gave us some 4'x4' square blocks to lay out around the berm. Those worked pretty well and weren't nearly as intrusive for the crowd. I'm not talking about a very big area that would need these taller blocks...just need one in the apex of the turn on the inside. That's why I liked the round blocks...only one needed, and no square edges to catch. We only had 2 of the round blocks in Arena Cross, and it wasn't a problem fitting them in the semi. Probably need 4 four Supercross though

Also, we always had a walk way between all the lanes of the track. That way you could run two sets of the regular blocks into the corner, and use the round block as a cap right in the corner. Last week at LA, they were using one line of blocks to separate the lanes....not enough room IMO..

Tuff blocks in corners or straights need to be straped on but the ones on the faces of jumps need to have some kind of solid surface so that they cant get hooked of the pegs. Because even if they are strapped on I would think it would be alot worse outcome going up the face of a triple and hooking a whole tuff block and dragging that up the face.

Would like to know how many races results have been affected by tuff blocks... But would be interesting to see how many guys that landed on those walked away from a crash with no injuries.

A catch 22 either way you look at it just maybe needs to be some adjustments made.
Straw Bales in corners, firmer and will just chip if hit by a peg; do we really need to see "parts unlimited" "progressive" on a 1000 tuff blocks?

It comes down to cost, and the cost has been two riders out with serious neck injuries vs the cost of having a painted tuff block vs a removable cover...

They should raise the cost of it for sponsors a little to paint them, I'm sure everyone would be ok with it seeing what we just witnessed...

It's time they clean up the bush league crap like this, it was a close enough call. I don't care what it takes but for a portion of the track or the signage around the track to pose a threat like this is totally unacceptable. And is it just me or did that track seem kind of "scruffy"? It looked like some race from years ago for some reason to me.

As mentioned several times in this thread, from this point forward it's time to change the name from Tuff Blocks to something a "sponsor" would be ashamed to have their name associated with unless completely revamped. After today any person calling them "tuff blocks" will be forever known as a self admitting bucket of hot diarrhea. That includes Ralph, Jeff, Erin and RC. And everyone else in the industry.

My suggestions for a name for the current offering:

Felds money maker blocks
Paralyzer blocks
Circus blocks
Weak tit blocks
Fag blocks
Gay ass blocks
Dumb ass track barriers
We don't give a fuck about the riders blocks

(No offense intended to dudes who like to suck it)

Just thankful that it was a Honda banner that caused the incident. Now they get to pay their own rider several million dollars with zero exposure. Great advertising Honda. Smart move.

After hearing Larry Brooks talk about this issue going on for the past fucken 10 years and NOTHING being done it got me a little pissed off. NOT sorry for the rant.

Starting to get some good ideas going. Don't stop! Ads on blocks are stupid. Bottom line. They are a safety device! SX can afford to fix this problem. Old Fart is correct. In my opinion, the riders should boycott and the teams should stand behind their riders. The rider is #1. Organize! This is ridiculous. Unacceptable. These injuries will impact these riders forever.

From 2 years ago:

Daystar99 wrote: Tough block covers coming off and affecting the outcome of a race and the riders' safety is just unacceptable and, considering how many good alternatives are available, borderline pathetic. This type of thing, besides being so dangerous, isn't "just part of racing" - it's so random and unpredictable and so potentially dire that it wrecks the race. There - I feel so much better after that - I was so absolutely pissed after first JB and then CP both hooked those damn things. This is going to be a close championship and it would be damned sad to have it decided by something as capricious as a tough block cover.

Why not just make the tough blocks triangle shaped instead of square? like " /\ " instead of " [_] "... well you get the picture. the riders wouldn't catch their pegs on it, they could actually ride on it without getting their tire kicked out, villo could ride over it after going off the track (kiddin), takes up less storage room, the covers they have now could be converted, ect ect...

I see way more pros than cons by doing something like this. Plus the logos would be easier for the viewer to see since most of the tv stuff is shot from arial views.

That is a very good idea. And if they need removeable covers, make them like a pillow cover - slide in slide out, with a zipper at the ends.

Somebody send this to head office, STAT.

Why not just use a more disposable / netting type material similar to wind break cloth?
1/25/2012 5:06am
What about something like this? Something that you just drop the bail into and zipper it in. I have some recyclable freezer shopping bags that I use - they're pretty tough and could hold signage. They also shouldn't be too expensive.

I seriously think it's the best idea I've read about in this place, ever. They would also be more stable & not as apt to fall over into the track.

Someone with connections should run this by Feld or Asterisk (where's the Docs - I know they pass thru here once in a while) or the teams or something.

Triangles don't seem to me like they'd work as intended to keep lanes separate. you'd just have little transfer jumps lining the track.
Aside from advertising, they are also there to help keep bikes in their lanes.
