I started running # 77 on my 82 YZ 60 because my Dad's buddy and local pro Bryan Hill ran it and he was my hero at the time. My Dad got me a 86 YZ 80 @ 10, I ran # 10 for one race( at Baja Acres FTW) but I was told I had to use the last 3 digits of my AMA #, so I ran 735. In 1989 I broke my leg pretty good and let my AMA membership expire, I forgot to check off "renew" on my new membership and got 390 in 1990, and I have ran that ever since. My Dad was 391, and now my sister runs that #, my son will be 393, some day when he races ( Mason is 8 months old) our #'s will look cool in the pits behind our trailer.

My son races #211. His birthday 12/21/01 and 121 was taken. He raced 199 for his first season because it was the only one left.

Haha, that's close to the thought process I went through to pick mine: 891 (day and month combo didn't work)
Some guy just came by at the track and thought I was using it because of Justin Boggle.

#953

I had #53 when I briefly raced mini's back in 1987. When I started racing again in 2001, the only numbers left were letter+number so I chose C53 as my first big bike number.

The next year I was still slow so I wanted a high number and 953 was available. I picked it and it stuck.

Maybe its like Hogwarts Academy where you don't pick the number, the number picks YOU.

I ran #91. That's the default number I was assigned when I got my first racing licence in 1977 and I used it for all my racing after that. I soon realized that lucky 7 x unlucky 13 = 91 and that pretty summed up my career, I either had good luck and won, or I crashedSmile , no middle ground.

Chose 714 because sons b day is 7-14-2008 and my high school # was 74 plus wifes high school # was 14. Works well but i see it used alot.

My kid is the racer, I just pay for stuff.

He runs 610 which comes from his birthdate....June 10th.

Filling out the form for my pro licence it asked what number, I wrote any, got #375. Ran it for years. My LLs number was #23 and it stuck on the whole family.

cool thread,

I've mostly run assigned/earned numbers in Colorado starting with my first race at Thunder Valley in 1990 (#523). I earned #312 the first year as novice numbers all started at 301. The next season I had 304 which was a heart breaker because I was ranked first going into the State Championships which I always had bad races in. Colorado in October usually brought cold, snowy and frozen ground final races.

I punhed into the local "B" class in 1992? and took the lowest number available #126. The following year I earned #108. In 1996 I had a fresh CR-250 (favorite bike ever) and was going to have a great intermediate class year. First race of the season I rode well but ended up getting 4th in every race which I felt good about. Later in the week a buddy of mine called me and said it was announced that I turned pro and I was in dis-belief. I didn't want that!! It turned out the top 3 riders that day came to Colorado from New Mexico and raced down a class. I was Ivan & Gio Tedesco along with Travis Riley and they all got disqualified in the days after the race which meant I got screwed out of two 1-1 scores (and trophies) for Open & 250 (sigh).

My first local pro number was 34 (on the 1996 Cr-250) and the next season I was ALL excited for the 1997 CR-250 Aluminum frame wonder bike and had my name on the pre-order list. By the grace of god a buddy convnced me it was a death trap and I got a 1997 KX-250 (great handling bike but seized lower rod bearing and had multiple frame cracking issues) and ran 16 (the lowest # I ever ran). Starting in 1998 I picked up a YZ-250 and have had Yamahas ever since. I was ranked 10th in pro points midway through 98 when I hyperextended my left leg which sheared off my tibial plateau without crashing!

Done for about a year of rehab and I've only raced a handful of times since and none after 2003. Now I race mountain bikes and occasionally ride my 2006 YZ450F. A few years ago I put my age of 36 on the bike cause I thought it looked cool. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!

#48. In 1986 I had my first real race bike, a YZ80, and wanted to run #68 with red numbers like Damon Bradshaw had on his YZ80. When I was at the local shop trying to get numbers they did not have red 6's so I ended up with 48 and have ran it ever since.

#86 cause I thought the 86 CRs were the best, and graduated HS that year.

For about 10 years I ran 64 because it was the last 2 numbers on my AMA number and I liked it. Then I took a few years off to go to college. When I came back some bung hole jack 64 so I switched to 641.

I use 979 because it was on clearance at Decal Works and stuck with it. My son is 810 as they were the only small numbers
left for his 50 and has never changed.

Just wondering, what # do you guys run, and is there any reason to why you have that number? Is it a good luck thing to keep running the same number or do you switch it up every year?

My first year in Novice class I ran # 270, pretty much because those were the only numbers left in our local Yamaha shop!
Since then, I have had # 717 on all my bikes that I have raced. For no real reason, other then #17 was my number in High School, and I've always like the number 17, so I just added an extra 7!

( and it has nothing to do with liking Stewy - I had 717 while he was still running 259. I've been told I must be a superfan cause I have two 7's in my number.......... Whistling )
331. There was rider who rode all over northern CA and he was so sick. I never knew his name though. Been trying to find it lol. About the same age as me, maybe a little older. Im 22. Last time I saw him ride, he was on a ktm, and in the Pro class at Marysville CA and he was battling with Micheal Brandes. I would say probably 2003, so he would still be a teenager then..

My number forever has been 5 but once I start riding again im changing it to that. It just looks sick too on a bike haha

If you were racing in Colorado a lot at that time, did you know any Perritons? Josh was the son, and I can't remember the dads name (but he's still racing the vet class at like 60!)

I'm trying to dispel the myth that 69 means 69!
AND I think I saw DeCoster run that number!

Ran 747 for years. Dont know how I got that number.

Funny thing one day unloading at a track and this guy comes walking buy stoned out of his mind looks at my bike and says "747 huh you gonna do some flllyyyying?" and he smiled and walked off. All of standing around about pissed our pants laughing....

Have # 2 know was the only number that bike shop had when I got the bike and it has stuck...

69 is a fine number! Be proud!

My first number was 72, picked because that was my football number in high school.
All of my other numbers were assigned: 450, 47b, 142, 174, 469 and my first OTHG number, which I can't remember (senility, I'm sure).

But my last number was picked by me, 509g, because 509 was the number of my dad's platoon in WWII. Yes, I am that old.

I always liked 99, but I wanted a 3-digit number. 999 seemed a little much, and 199 was all Travis Pastrana, so I chose 991. I've stuck with it for the last dozen years or so.

Its looks pretty cool and I am a fan of 3 digits like TP199, so it just grew on me.
The number on my first big bike was 381, and my best friends number was 254, and we both knew this kid at the track (his dad owned the shop right across the street) and his number was 127. Turns out 127x2=254 and 127x3=381. I have no clue how I ended up finding that out, but it was pretty cool to us haha

I don't recall that name but I've hit my head a lot. There were also a LOT of folks racing back then.

991... My daughter was born in 99, my dad's stock car was #99, my brother's sprint car was #99, I graduated in 91, and yeah it's Pastrana's # backwards. And my daughter was born 3/10, so she runs 310.
