I had #53 when I briefly raced mini's back in 1987. When I started racing again in 2001, the only numbers left were letter+number so I chose C53 as my first big bike number.
The next year I was still slow so I wanted a high number and 953 was available. I picked it and it stuck.
Maybe its like Hogwarts Academy where you don't pick the number, the number picks YOU.
He runs 610 which comes from his birthdate....June 10th.
Later changed to #413 when I raced AX - my district number
I've mostly run assigned/earned numbers in Colorado starting with my first race at Thunder Valley in 1990 (#523). I earned #312 the first year as novice numbers all started at 301. The next season I had 304 which was a heart breaker because I was ranked first going into the State Championships which I always had bad races in. Colorado in October usually brought cold, snowy and frozen ground final races.
I punhed into the local "B" class in 1992? and took the lowest number available #126. The following year I earned #108. In 1996 I had a fresh CR-250 (favorite bike ever) and was going to have a great intermediate class year. First race of the season I rode well but ended up getting 4th in every race which I felt good about. Later in the week a buddy of mine called me and said it was announced that I turned pro and I was in dis-belief. I didn't want that!! It turned out the top 3 riders that day came to Colorado from New Mexico and raced down a class. I was Ivan & Gio Tedesco along with Travis Riley and they all got disqualified in the days after the race which meant I got screwed out of two 1-1 scores (and trophies) for Open & 250 (sigh).
My first local pro number was 34 (on the 1996 Cr-250) and the next season I was ALL excited for the 1997 CR-250 Aluminum frame wonder bike and had my name on the pre-order list. By the grace of god a buddy convnced me it was a death trap and I got a 1997 KX-250 (great handling bike but seized lower rod bearing and had multiple frame cracking issues) and ran 16 (the lowest # I ever ran). Starting in 1998 I picked up a YZ-250 and have had Yamahas ever since. I was ranked 10th in pro points midway through 98 when I hyperextended my left leg which sheared off my tibial plateau without crashing!
Done for about a year of rehab and I've only raced a handful of times since and none after 2003. Now I race mountain bikes and occasionally ride my 2006 YZ450F. A few years ago I put my age of 36 on the bike cause I thought it looked cool. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!

Pit Row
I started as a novice with the number 78 because it was the lowest available in my USRA series....then I switched to number 31 for the same reason, when I got married in 2003 I started using 614 because my anniversary is June 14, and been using it ever since...be it, in the Desert and not on the track (so technically its 614V...for over 30 class).
was given to me at the Wold Mini in 97, stuck with it ever since.
also i see it everywhere. stayed in multiple hotel rooms number 719, see it on the clock, prices in stores, it's coincidentally the last 3 in my license plate, my ex-gf birthday, my dog's birthday, etc...
AND I think I saw DeCoster run that number!
Funny thing one day unloading at a track and this guy comes walking buy stoned out of his mind looks at my bike and says "747 huh you gonna do some flllyyyying?" and he smiled and walked off. All of standing around about pissed our pants laughing....
Have # 2 know was the only number that bike shop had when I got the bike and it has stuck...
My first number was 72, picked because that was my football number in high school.
All of my other numbers were assigned: 450, 47b, 142, 174, 469 and my first OTHG number, which I can't remember (senility, I'm sure).
But my last number was picked by me, 509g, because 509 was the number of my dad's platoon in WWII. Yes, I am that old.
